What are your favorite veggie recipes?
Thanks for the responses so far... to clarify, I'm looking for vegetable dishes, not just vegetarian dishes. Thanks!

What songs do you listen to on repeat--and then once more?
What a great question. Thanks for asking.

First of all, Admiral Haddock... I am sure I will get hooked on Don't Call Me Baby! Love it.

My recent and current addictions:

Wilco: Hummingbird, Passenger Side
They Might Be Giants: Broke in Two, Roy G Biv, Meet the Elements, Contrecoup, Apartment Four
The Band: Daniel and the Sacred Heart
Radiohead: In Rainbows (whole album!)... [more]

How to best transfer and keep a domain name I own?
I am not within 30 days, so it seems I can move it. But how do I go about moving it without having a lapse in ownership?

Where to get a family portrait done in Manhattan?
I'm an amateur photographer and if I saw a listing for this posted on Craigslist, I'd jump at it for $250. Of course I'm not a professional with a reputation, so I would suggest you pay me half when I arrive and half when I deliver the photos.

There are probably hundreds of photographers in NYC who could approach it the same way.

Photogenic wintertime backdrops in the Philly area?
How about the top of the steps of the Art Museum? Also cold, but it doesn't look any less interesting. Shots of the couple all bundled up could look cute.

Photo enhancement for old tombstones
Try looking at each color channel separately (R, G & B). Noise is often in just one channel.

Pick the color channel that has the least noise and work with just that one, playing with contract, levels, etc.

Why did only one bottle of water freeze?
Interesting. Maybe the plastic is thicker on one of the bottles?

Outdoor spaces at Pevely are only $15-20.

We probably would rent a small UHaul van for the day - prob less than $50.

I didn't know a doorbell could confuse me.
As far as I know, doorbells are all the same low voltage, so you can just replace the button. It's like a light switch - you can replace a switch without replacing the light itself.

As a matter of fact, I installed a new doorbell button a few years ago - just picked up a basic one at Home Depot - and it was as easy to install as a new lightswitch.

$50 Shopping Spree for MEEEE!
I carry a Leatherman Squirt S4 on my keychain and use it every day. Even gave them out as groomsman gifts (personalized). They come in several colors.

There's a similar Leatherman that is about the same size but you have to open them to get to any tools. The squirt has all the blades on the outside for quicker access. You only open them when you need scissors.

(There's a P4 too - has pliers instead of scissors).

What movies would I like?
Check out Wes Anderson's film - not southern, but subtle, slow and calm. Darjeeling Limited and Rushmore are good places to start.

I don't know if you're into foreign films, but the films of Zhang Yimou (China) are slow, calm and beautiful. I'd recommend Raise the Red Lantern, Ju Dou or Not One Less to start.

One more idea... have you seen O Brother, Where Art Thou?

uncooked beef left outside
I wouldn't eat it. The USDA recommends that a food not be eaten if it is at an unsafe temperature (between 40 and 140 degrees) for more than 2 hours. They say that once food has been left out longer than that, it should be discarded.

http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/Basics_for_Handling_Food_Safely/index.asp

They're pretty clear about this... it's not worth the risk.

Does he have jimmy legs? Spontaneously evacuating bladder?
I noticed this too - they definitely added a little curtain blocking view of his legs. It didn't seem like much of a security measure, unless there was a secret service guy hiding down there.

Would love to know the answer to this...

Help my teenage sister unlock the wonder of Photoshop
I think a couple one-on-one lessons with someone familiar with Photoshop would be really helpful for a beginner. Perhaps one lesson right after she gets the software and another lesson a month later.

I use Photoshop, and much of what I do with it is using probably 30% of what the software is capable of. I think I could show someone the basics in 2 or 3 sessions.

Journal Software on a Mac?
I use the Evernote software on Mac and iphone, neither of which shows ads. There is a web version as well, which syncs up automatically, but you don't have to use it. I see it as an online backup.

Evernote has excellent tagging features and seems to handle all common file types.

They have PC software as well. Maybe check it out again?

my computer is underage, it should not be naked.
I have a clear skin on my aluminum macbook, and had it on my prior white macbook as well. I don't see any fingerprints, but that might be partly because the computers are light colors. If yours is a dark color, it might be different.

Point, manually adjust thingometer, click
What you probably want to learn is manual exposure, which is the combination of how you set shutter speed, aperture and ISO. It affects everything about the photo.

The book Understanding Exposure is very helpful, and available everywhere. Even if you just go to your local bookstore and look through it, it will be immensely helpful.

This link is helpful for beginners.

Also this one.

I did a quick search for the phrase "water music" and this is the only show that listed it in the music notes. Might be worth a listen.

The food that defines your state is?
I can think of a few city-related foods, but not much in the way of states, other than the obvious cliches (Wisconsin=cheese, for example).

City examples:

Philadelphia: Soft pretzels or cheesesteaks
St. Louis: Gooey butter cake or toasted ravioli
New York: Hot dog or bagel
Chicago: Hot dog or deep dish pizza

Purchasing a used VW Cabrio with a online vs. sticker price discrepancy
I agree with jayder... and when you go in, I wouldn't let them think for a second that you would be willing to pay a penny over the $7800 price. As a matter of fact, I would find something wrong with it and ask for a discount. Tell them your budget was $6500 and offer them $6800.

If they tell you the online listing was an error, tell them you're not interested and walk out. Chances are they'll come back to you and try to negotiate the price down. I would tell them... [more]

I am accessing my work email using gmail, and I need help satisfying my company's backup requirements. Help?
kbanas, I thought so too, but gmail only allows IMAP to access gmail with another mail client. It does not appear to be an option to use gmail to fetch emails.

Filters only work for incoming mail, not outgoing mail. Tried that already.

I will check out the greasemonkey script... thanks.
posted to Ask MetaFilter by kdern at 9:22 AM on June 30, 2009
zeoslap - I could... the downside is that all incoming emails (and attachments) would be duplicated.

gravitus - that sounds like a great solution. If you could post the info that would be great...

Also - I am on safari. I use greasekit to get greasemonkey scripts to work on safari, but it does not seem to work for the auto bcc script. Not sure why.

Ugh!

Where and what to do in Philadelphia
Best eating experiences - both highly recommended:

Reading Terminal Market - an incredible assortment of food stalls to choose from

Cheesesteaks: Pat's and Jim's are the originals, but I like Jim's on South Street better. Try them all. Make sure you try one with Cheese Whiz to make it authentic.

Help me plan a few days in Italy, starting from Venice.
OK - 2 questions...

How about the idea of exploring the area between Venice and Florence, possibly by train?

Any thoughts on the towns around Venice (in the Veneto)?
posted to Ask MetaFilter by kdern at 9:02 AM on May 8, 2009
Thanks for all the advice. All the opinions were helpful.

I've decided to fly out of Florence 3 days after the business trip is over, which allows me the flexibility to divide my time between Venice, Florence and possibly a visit to Siena.

Best Mac DJ software?
I just tried Mixx and can't seem to do beatmatching, perhaps because I am unable to do a headphone preview/cue. I think that's because I don't have a soundcard that can do two audio outputs at once? (I have a new aluminum macbook).

We have always had weird in-laws
Geni.com is fantastic, especially in the fact that it is online. This allows for other family members to participate and add their own data.

The only problem I've found with Geni is that there's no way to export all the information into a comprehensive format. You can import your data into other family tree software apps, but I can't figure out a way to print it all for archival purposes.
