Movies where actors sing?
Breakfast at Tiffany's includes Audrey Hepburn singing Moon River.

Also - check out the Tracy Ullman show on DVD. They often had sketches where the actors spontaneously burst into song.

Where can I buy curious decorative objects in Manhattan, NY?
There's a great Asian department store with LOTS of inexpensive stuff. It's just off of Canal Street in Chinatown - I think it's called Pearl. It's about 3-4 floors. Ask around... it's a great place.

Where should we stay overnight between Boston and Toronto?
In general, I'd look at a map of the route and find a large town or small city approximately halfway. Then I'd look for hotel chains you're familiar with in that area. I'd always rather stay at a hotel chain that I know than some local motel that I know nothing about.

Help me help my Mom get off of AOL!
If she's used to AOL, perhaps Yahoo e-mail would be an easier next step? It's closer to AOL and Outlook, especially if you can get in on their new beta layout.

How do I protect my laptop en route?
Nothing to worry about - I travel with my laptop all the time with no case or padding whatsoever. But this is a good reminder to back up your hard drive! And make sure your homeowners or renters insurance covers your computer.

Flight to Australia
Just for the record - you can often get an exit row seat anytime on the day of the flight, even over the phone. So you can call the airline at 2 AM and ask them to switch you. If you have any kind of elite status on an airline, you can often book exit row seats online months in advance.

Films set in Paris?
Breathless, by Jean-Luc Godard, is THE classic Parisian film.

Also - the Umbrellas of Cherbourg is another French classic. Not sure if it's set in Paris or not.

ID stolen. How do I get on my plane this Sunday?
I'm a travel agent - this happens all the time. You should have a police report documenting your stolen wallet, plus all of the documentation you list above. Bring your original birth certificate if you have it. Be really nice to the security and gate staff - you're in their hands. If they say no, find a supervisor to speak to and be really nice to him.

I have no friends
I also think therapy would be helpful... specifically behavioral therapy. Some therapists will just listen to what you have to say, others will advise you on what you should do to improve your situation. You may want to look into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and see if there's a specialist near you.

Can you name this song after hearing me hum a bit of it?
I don't recognize it, but I tried tapping it on the Song Tapper... here's what it came up with. Any of them look familiar?

It definitely sounds like a traditional Irish or Scottish song.

Last-minute Valentine's Day flower delivery
Just find a person in that area and have them go buy flowers and deliver them. Shouldn't be that hard.

Worst case scenario: hire someone from a cleaning service or something, pay their hourly fee for an hour or two and have them pickup and deliver some flowers.

How do I lose my opu?
You could use a rule of thumb - if something is under 25 calories or so, don't worry about counting it. Unless you eat 10 of them! Don't drive yourself crazy about this. Count your calories as closely as you can, be honest with yourself about how many calories things have, and be consistent.

If you're not sure about how many calories something has, just use your best guess. It's better than not counting the calories at all.

How long can I keep an opened bottle of sake?
I did see that AskMe post - but I need advice on how to store the bottle after it's opened. It's too large to drink at one time (or even in one month).

Any advice?

Sitting on the same side? Yay or nay, I ask you?
I think it's awkward, unless you're sitting in a restaurant where you are able to sit side by side, against a wall, where you can look out on the rest of the crowd. It seems to work well at those tables that are booth on one side and chairs on the other. More natural that way.

How to re-hang a fallen hand railing on plaster walls?
I'm getting mixed advice from you all here... anybody actually done this before?
posted to Ask Metafilter by kdern at 12:36 PM on January 6, 2006
Remember - I have PLASTER walls, not drywall. I don't think toggle bolts will work.
posted to Ask Metafilter by kdern at 12:37 PM on January 6, 2006
I don't know what's behind the plaster - it seems to be several inches deep. It looks like just plaster to me... all crumbly.
posted to Ask Metafilter by kdern at 12:55 PM on January 6, 2006
It certainly doesn't look anything like the photos on this page.
posted to Ask Metafilter by kdern at 12:59 PM on January 6, 2006
None of this sounds like it's going to work in my situation. I don't think there's anything behind the plaster - it's just crumbling plaster. The hole is about 3/4" deep and there's no wood, brick or metal.

The wall is not a full wall... it's kind of like the wall on the right side in this photo (not my house).

Are you saying that if I dig far enough through the plaster, there has to be some kind of lath behind it?... [more]
posted to Ask Metafilter by kdern at 1:25 PM on January 6, 2006
Oops - here's the link: "The wall is not a full wall... it's kind of like the wall on the right side in this photo (not my house). "
posted to Ask Metafilter by kdern at 1:25 PM on January 6, 2006
One more question - if I use drywall to fill the hole, how do I get it to be flat with the rest of the wall? Do I dig the hole down to the lath and then use plaster to build up some thickness before putting the drywall on?

And then once the drywall is on, it sounds like you're all recommending that I reattach the railing to the studs OR over the repair with molly or toggle bolts that go through the drywall, plaster underneath the drywall (if any) AND the lath. Is that right?

It's the gym cops, man! They're after me!
My guess is that no one at the YMCA cares. You could keep it up as a "household" or split into 2 individual memberships. I can't imagine that they'd ask any questions.

Can I make a Mac work on my office network?
To clarify - I wouldn't expect the docking station to work with a Mac laptop. The company would not have a problem with me using my own computer as long as it doesn't cause any problems with files or the server. And they'd like me to use the current monitor, so that it matches the rest in the office.

I want the 12" laptop, so I can't imagine working on the small screen all day, every day. I'd want to set up some kind of docking situation.

I don't understand what some of you are saying about Exchange. If I get Office for Mac, doesn't that include Outlook? Will I be able to use it on my office network without problems?

Will I be able to use Mac Mail software on my office system?

What is Exchange?

Help me, Mr. Piano Man
I recommend taking a lesson occasionally with a classical-oriented piano teacher, preferably someone at the university level. Even one lesson every 4-6 months can help direct you and give you feedback on your hand positions. Also - doing Hanon wrong is a waste of time, as it only reinforces bad habits. Get some "hands on" instruction once in a while and it will be much more useful in the long run.

How to manage computer storage issues?
I don't know anything about these small external hard drives. Up to 250 GB? Cool. Can someone post a link to a decent model that I can use as a starting point (in the U.S.)?

Also - burning DVDs would be a great idea, but I don't have a DVD burner in the current laptop! Gotta start shopping for the new one.

Power shower hacks?
I've been thinking how nice it would be to have a digital temperature control for the shower itself. Why have to turn knobs? Is this 1950? If you know you want the water to be 102 degrees, there should be a way to push a button and make it so.

Last minute house move - your advice here!
If both locations are in the same town or city, allow a couple days of overlap where you can access both places.

On your first overlap day, move the small, fragile things that you wouldn't know how to pack or trust a mover to move. Also bring in the basics to make your new place tolerable: toilet paper, sodas, lights, soap, etc.

Then when you move, plan to use one room as storage for all the boxes you won't need access to in the first couple... [more]

Notation for Hip Hop lyric transcription
There's lots of modern compositions with notation for spoken or oddly sung lyrics. Look at vocal music from contemporary composers, like Peter Maxwell Davies. I remember one piece in particular called something like Diary of a Mad King... I think there's lots of notation for spoken word.
posted to Ask Metafilter by kdern at 2:12 PM on December 1, 2005
Sorry - it's called Eight Songs for a Mad King. Couldn't find actual notation online... just this photo. But any decent university music library should have it.

How do I keep time with a click track?
See if you can double the speed of the click track, so that it clicks not only on the beat, but on the in-between beat as well. The beats will be more frequent, with less space in between, and it might be easier to stay on track (no pun intended).

Stopping bread mold
If you want to freeze sliced bread but don't want toast, you can defrost by just letting it sit out for 15 minutes or so. If you cover the bread with a kitchen towel and flip it over after about 10 minutes, it comes out almost like new.

It's a pain, but it works.
