What's causing the yucky taste?
Once my boss had these this along with what appeared to be a terrible cold that lasted forever, and would get somewhat better for a few days and then get worst again. He ended up passing it around to everyone in the lab. He finally described the symptoms the right way to the right doctor, and she diagnosed him with a mycoplasma infection. She prescribed him a particular antibiotic and it went away finally pretty fast.

Sound of main apartment door slamming akin to small earthquake
We had a problem with this at my apartment building. It didn't really bother me that much, but other people apparently complained, and the manager put a simple laminated sign on the inside of the door. It pretty much solved the problem. Why not ask the manager if he or you can put a sign up.
The ones on our doors say something like "Please refrain from running on the stairs and letting the door slam shut. It's very loud in the nearby apartments." Hmmm, surely... [more]

What's the proper approach to photographing people in public?
The "for a class" cover story works pretty well. Often people will suddenly become very interested and helpful if they think you're working on some assignment. Otherwise I think most people go for the forgiveness instead of permission route for candid shots. If people notice and seem upset go up to them, introduce yourself, tell them what you're doing, maybe give them a card with your website if that seems reasonable, and flatter them. If they're still upset just apologize and walk... [more]

Cupcakefilter?
You saw this recipe from that same site? It looks like what you want except that it makes half as many. Also one of the variants is to substitute some of the flour for cocoa powder so you seem to be on the right track there.
What about using chocolate extract in your white cupcakes? I don't think I've ever eaten anything that used it. It doesn't sound very good, but I suppose you could try it. The problem is that white chocolate is the fat part of the beans more or less,... [more]

How not to lose music from iPodiPod to iTunes, Vol. 1
Yeah, Apple doesn't make this easy. I've used CopyTrans to transfer music from my Ipod to my work computer. That one's for Windows. There are many other programs you can try.
If your library was only stuff you bought from iTunes--stop laughing--you could do Store...Check for purchases and download that stuff again.

When my nephew was born I started browsing the Caldecott winners and getting those or books by those writers or illustrators (sometimes they're the same person.) They've always been big hits. Brewing up a stink?
I'm going to agree with zamboni and describe the smell as more sweet and malty than yeasty or bready. At least all the small breweries around where I've lived or worked smelled like that. It also always seems to be on Thursdays.
I personally don't care much for the smell. It's not a bad smell really--it's not like you're next to a paper mill or a rendering plant--and it wouldn't keep me out of an apartment I really liked.

Can my company deduct annual leave instead of sick leave?
All the Universities (in the US) where I've worked have had this kind of policy. That is you couldn't take sick days and vacation days without an intervening day when you worked. It does seem like a reasonable company would let you have your sick days if you could prove that you were really sick. I never had to try it out in my case.
I suppose it's too late to claim the whole time as sick leave? Maybe sometime in the future you could use two sick days for a long weekend... [more]

After Sunrocket imploded a while back I switched to ViaTalk. Right then the service was pretty bad as they were swamped with refugees. It took about 3 weeks to get everything up and running. Now it's fine. It's pretty cheap especially since they added my Sunrocket free year to their deal. so I ended up buying a year of 500 minutes/month for around $150 and they gave me a free year. Some details on making your own pita chips:
1. Most pitas I've cut up have a thin side and a thick side, either don't separate the sides (too thick for me) or put the thins and the thicks on separate cookie sheets and bake separately. Otherwise you risk a sheet full of half over-done and half under-done.
2. Bake at 400F (pre-heated) for 5-7 minutes. Watch them carefully. The baking is not linear and the thins will go way faster than the thicks.... [more]

What to do in the Pacific Northwest next week?
I second SCDB's Multnomah Falls suggestion. From there you can go east or west (mostly west for ones close to the road) on the Columbia River Highway (not the interstate--it will be obvious) to several other falls with parking lots and trails that you can go on for as far as you want. If you want to you can go all the way back to Portland (more or less) on the historic highway. It's a nice little drive. On a weekday you'll probably have most of the falls (except Multnomah) mostly to yourself.... [more]

It looks like Dove's "soap free" products don't contain sodium tallowate or sodium palmitate, while the other products do. The soap free stuff has other surfactants like Cool Papa Bell suggests--e.g. ammonium lauryl sulfate.
Oh, and soap doesn't contain lye, but lye (sodium hydroxide--very dangerous) plus animal fat = sodium tallowate. I'm vastly over-simplifying here.

You should be able to get latex gloves at most drugstores or places like Wal-Mart, Target, etc.
If you have problems with latex look for vinyl or nitrile gloves. Nitrile gloves come in cool colors.
Maybe if you have dry skin that might be aggravating the problem and some kind of hand lotion will help? I also advise changing the gloves several times during the day if you're going to be wearing them constantly.
