LA Street Life Photos

Estevan Oriol photographs LA street life, celebrity portraits, and hip-hop album covers. (A handful of the photos feature scantily-clad ladies, so this might possibly be nsfw.)

Spanish Civil War Posters

One hell of an obituary

"Count Gottfried von Bismarck, who was found dead on Monday aged 44, was a louche German aristocrat with a multi-faceted history as a pleasure-seeking heroin addict, hell-raising alcoholic, flamboyant waster and a reckless and extravagant host of homosexual orgies."

SOP for banks, guards, and guns.

Is it standard practice for security guards to have their sidearms drawn when escorting currency deliveries to banks?

Ebay item broken in shipping, who is responsible?

I bought a stereo component off ebay, and it arrived broken. Thankfully, when I made the purchase, in the shipping options, I opted to include shipping insurance (vis USPS).

Help me fix my subwoofer

I have a passive NHT SW2 subwoofer being driven by an NHT SA-2 amplifier that is supposed to control the volume. Lately, however, the volume for the sub plays at full, irrespective of the actual volume setting on the knob. When it first started, tinkering with the volume control could sometimes get the correct volume, but now it's just at max all the time.

The writing on the wall

Barcelona Street Art. Most places consider graffiti a form of vandalism, but in Barcelona, street art is embraced. The result is a city with public walls like giant canvases of modern art.

You, sir, have the boorish manners of a Yalie.

Impossible Is Nothing. Yale student applies for job on Wall Street, includes video detailing his physical prowess and philosophy of success. Hilarity ensues: "He single-handedly decreased trading volumes over the last two hours of the day because everyone was laughing too hard." Perhaps not surprisingly, there are some problems with his story.

In space, no one can hear you say "cheese".

The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Over half a million photographs of Earth taken from orbit by astronauts, from 1961 through the present. The ability of the astronauts to rapidly identify interesting phenomena allows them to capture events as they occur, like volcanic eruptions, floods, and hurricanes, or take advantage of the angle of the sun to highlight specific features, like the pyramids or Mount Everest.

It would be a grave mistake not to buy this calendar.

Men of Mortuaries: Because nothing is hotter than a man who handles corpses. See the local news story (wmv) and some promotion pics (both nsfw). Finally, I've found something to replace my Studmuffins of Science.

I came here with a simple dream, a dream of killing all the humans.

Recycled Robots, hand-made from scavenged parts. Robots, robots, more robots, and their pets. And where there are robots, rest assured, there will be rayguns. (via the eminently readable Drawn!)

Two AskMe posts on interracial adoption and interracial breeding within an hour of each other. They had the potential to become fiery train wrecks, but instead, the answers were thoughtful and civil. Thanks for the quality discourse!

A modern day Jules Verne, on a slightly smaller scale

Live steam creations. We've seen steampunk robots in artwork, and read about them in fiction, but now someone has gone and built real, radio-controlled, steam-powered creatures that roll and creep and swim.

What should I see in Spain?

My wife and I are going to be in Spain for one week in March. We'd like to take in as much as possible, but not run ourselves ragged (especially since the laid back atmosphere of Spain is one of the draws). What are some things that you must see and/or do if you're in Spain?

Looking back on the Golden State

The Online Archive of California brings together historical materials from a variety of state institutions, including museums, historical societies, and archives. These materials include letters, legal documents, manuscripts, works of art, diaries, and historical photographs. Thousands of photographs.

From just the Bancroft Library at Berkeley: Artistic homes, 1887-1890, agricultural laborers, 1906-1911, the San Francisco earthquake and fire, construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Quentin Prison, and war relocation camps. And that's barely scratching the surface.

smugMaps , photo-sharing mixed with Google Maps, allowing you to associate your photos with geographic locations. See the mysterious lost mountain city of Machu Picchu, the spectacular, lonely landscapes of Iceland, and an apartment building in St. Louis. They can't all be glamorous, folks.

We aren't always fighting

This Spartan Life , a Halo talk show. A nice example of Machinima, using game engines in unexpected ways. Some, like the folks behind Red vs. Blue or The Strangerhood, make long running series, others recreate movie scenes, and some people just like playing with the environment.
