Graffiti for Butterflies
Nifty. twirlypen, it seems to me that you would only graffiti near your own milkweed plants, so it's likely you own the structure that's being painted on.

Can I safely remove the usb drive?
In Linux I always unmount the drive. Often IO operations are put on hold, so to speak, and even when the file manager lists the file as copied it may not be so.

Futility Closet
It's a blog. A mildly interesting one, but it's just a blog with a lot of random posts. What's the point?

CBC FLV
I would contact the CBC and ask them to put it on Youtube, for two reasons. First, I'm sure they would appreciate being notified of additional venues for this video. Secondly, compressing FLV twice is going to look terrible.

When is the better living through chemistry?
That seems to be the idea, but if you read transhumanist blogs or essays, they talk about possible future technologies. There aren't reports of "how I like my hearing aid and how I think it could be improved", but there are dozens of authors pontificating on "how I will use nanotechnology in my Adrienne Barbeau-bot".

What are some mindblowing scientific concepts?
I would second No Absolute Time and The Double Slit Experiment.
The relative time theory says there is no clock, real or imagined, that tells the same time when moving as when it is still. When objects move, physics behave differently than when they are at rest (relative to the frame of reference). You can say particles decay at such-and-such speed, and disagree with your speedy friend who says they decay at a different speed, and... [more]

TV Pirate Tells All
HOWEVER. If a company literally beams information into my house, I fail to see how decoding it, if I can, can be illegal.
Your neighbor's WiFi is beamed into your house, and accessing it is also illegal (the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act). Many kinds of information may be physically on your property but you do not have the right to read it.

Tablets, the lease of these
I got a tablet last year and never looked back. Note-taking is so much easier: an infinite amount of paper and colored pens are at my disposal. In fact, when I had to hand-write notes, I sorely missed Edit Undo.
Two downsides I've found: battery life and noise. But those vary among device and personal preference.

I would like to know this too. I have the same problem. A Yahoo Answers result turned up Scandex Systems, based in Tampa, Florida. Unfortunately I have no personal experience with them or any other service.

Another idea (in the legal dark gray area) is to search for ebooks of your content. If the book is popular enough, someone else has already scanned and OCR'd it.

The Future Without IPv6
> It is an interesting article, but it is an article that starts from the questionable argument that IPv6 will never happen. Yeah, it has taken a helluva long time to get there, but so has the HDtv transition. If anything, to me, this article shows why NAT won't work.
I believe that's the point of the article. It's taking the idea that IPv6 isn't necessary to an extreme conclusion: IPv4 will rule the world and anarchy will reign supreme.... [more]

I'm a libertarian and I like the idea of the Futarchy. Natch, I don't agree with the Libertarian Party's stance on many things and have no idea what other libertarians think about it.

"You look a little guilty, old buddy. Whatcha been up to?"
I realize that blind faith has its benefits, but there are times when I wish some people could see the cognitive dissonance staring them in the face.
I recommend taking a course in logic. I took one in college; a fundie was in my class and dropped out after a week. I like to imagine that he re-evaluated his life and applied critical thinking to his closely-held tenets. But if crap like this doesn't cause cognitive dissonance, I don't think any amount of Occam's Razor will help.

15 bits of crypto should be enough for anybody
I see this issue is much bigger than I originally thought. I'm not very security-minded, but when I read the question and saw the bit about un-initialized memory, I realized that would be a useful source of entropy. How did the questioner realize that he was dealing with code that would use unusual techniques to get entropy, and not realize that un-initialized memory could be very important?
I would like to thank finite for the post and for the... [more]

3 to 10 classroom hours
What I'd like to see is ID taught in science class... as an example of how not to use the scientific method.Hypothesis: God Someone (or something or someones, but not aliens, that's just silly) did it, rather than genetics and / or mutation.
Observation: Some things in nature are really, really complicated. There aren't useful transitional forms.
Experiment: The transitional forms that weren't useful had other uses that helped the organism.... [more]

Global food studies
@Benny: I agree mass pesticides are a poor solution. But while we wait umpteen seasons for a variation of a crop that is resistant and has a good enough yield to cultivate, what will we eat?
I agree that nature solves its own problems. But with enough knowledge, humanity can solve those problems more quickly.

No Intelligence Allowed, indeed.
Have any of the people who say "I believe in micro-evolution but not macro-." been able to pin down what would satisfy their definition of macro-evolution? Cuz if you define macro-evolution as speciation, we've got plenty of examples. What's left to prove?
