Please help me sell my home!
Thanks for the advice so far, guys. I called Aurora, who claim they did not receive my mod paperwork (this is #$*&, as I have the fax confirmation, arrgh). I was able to bring one mortgage fully current--but it took some negotiating--and will bring the other current next month. This should ensure that everything is kosher by my closing date.

Who's the best to help me with my bad credit?
Lutheran Social Services did a free hour consultation over the phone; we talked about everything I spent money on and they wrote up and mailed a budget. It's been incredibly helpful, and they didn't talk about Jesus. They started me on a debt management plan, which lowered the interest rates on two credit cards from 27% and 21% to 7% and 9%. It's actually improved my credit.
My monthly payment went from $143 to $61, which has helped free up cash to pay down other... [more]

Finding a way out of a tangled web of financial aid
Do you have some sort of representative or counselor you've been working with at Waseda? Unfortunately, I know that in my school's case (we're US-based), very few international students qualify for aid from either country--though we are able to award them academic scholarships. But your counselor or rep may know about options, especially for loans. They should be invested in getting you there--you are, after all, a source of revenue, so I'd lean heavily on their support and advice.

In an application for a private foundation grant, how do I decide a specific request amount?
Do you have contacts at any of the orgs they've funded previously who might be willing to give you a sense of the range? Other non profits are surprisingly forthcoming with this information (and expect reciprocity in the future if you've got useful news).
If not, ask for an amount about 15% or so higher than you actually need, and show support from other funders for the total project cost in the budget.

Anyone have any tips for reconnecting with an ex?
I called up an ex a year ago and we've been talking on the phone ever since (he lives 1,000 miles away now). I'm really glad I called him--it was a little formal at first, then maybe a little too flirty, but now he's a great person to call when I want to talk to someone for hours.
There's something about someone that used to love you--I get perspective on myself from him, and vice versa. I don't expect much from him, and I know his limitations. I don't need anything... [more]

PhD program "waiting list?"
Call them to ask if you've been admitted. Seriously. Grad schools do weird stuff all the time because they're understaffed--they may well have forgotten to send you an acceptance. A friend recently got a letter turning him down for an assistantship, and he had to call to ask if that meant he'd been admitted anyway. (They were like, "Oh, yeah, sorry, congratulations, you've got a huge scholarship coming.") You have a right to know where you stand in the process at all times, and... [more]

Should I talk to my boyfriend about me leaving, or ignore the situation?
I'm in a similar situation with my boyfriend. I think you should talk about it--in fact, I think it will be hard not to talk about it, because it'll come up as you talk about your future.
We haven't been able to "solve it," but our conversations have been helpful in determining certainties: We can't do long distance, I can't follow him, he can't stay, we love each other, the friendship matters, we're happy for each other, it's hard, we may visit, we'll be... [more]

Keeping the Rock Alive
Does your campus offer any kind of practice space they'd consider letting you use for regular practices? Sometimes if you list your band as a campus club you can get access, or they may be amenable to sharing the room if you can prove the band has some social benefit (play on campus once or twice). I've lived next to bands as a young, not-grouchy student, and found that there was never a time I liked being home while they were practicing--it interrupted my ability to nap, concentrate, or just... Waldorf/Steiner Schools
I was a Montessori/Steiner kid, and I'd send my children to similar schools. It's a little like the liberal arts ideal with a healthy dose of applied developmental psychology--we learned how to learn. I didn't learn a lot of discipline, and sometimes struggle to complete tasks on time as an adult. Still, I think it was a very valuable way to learn, since it didn't differentiate... [more]

Is any Master's Degree better than no Master's Degree?
I waited five years in my chosen field to start a MA, and already I'm seeing that I won't move up as quickly as I'd like without the advanced degree. In some cases, promotion depends on having reached that credential--there are people working above me, for example, with less depth of experience in this field, but they have the Master's (and in several cases, in fields far removed from ours). It's hard to be the sympathetic party in a breakup like this... when I was in that situation, people stayed away because they assumed I'd be bitter or hurting. My organization calculates benefits at 17-20%, which is very high (and one of the reasons I stay with my job while freelancing on the side).
