Ask post: Mystery TV series
My first thought was The Hardy Boys, but that's just based on a really fuzzy memory .

Ask post: Not so itsy bitsy.
There's plush facehuggers... They're the right color and have lotsa legs, at least. I got my dad pretty good with one a couple years ago.

Ask post: Outdoor theater on the cheap
The people at the Backyard Theater Forum can answer all your questions about screens and such. A quick search didn't turn up much about renting, but take a closer look...

Last year, I just used a 4X8 sheet of white-laminated particleboard, hung in front of the shed on my parents' back porch. If you want to go that way, just go to your local home supply/hardware store and look for something flat and white and light enough to hang or prop up somewhere. At the end of... [more]

Ask post: 9-5 without a degree?
I was in the same position (and state!) as you: didn't finish school, worked retail for... too long... Take a look at the State Civil Service website. Obviously, it's hard to tell how many jobs there are in your area, but there are plenty in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia (and liquor stores- yeah, those are civil service.) There always testing for some kind of clerical jobs, and it's pretty cut-and-dried to look at the list and tell which jobs you can get without a degree. Bottom... [more]

Ask post: Good emulators for OS X Intel?
Nestopia is good for NES games. Get a Wii-mote and download Darwiin Remote and it's just like the real thing, almost. And seconding snes9x. I've been wasting entirely too much time playing Rampart with that the last few days...

Ask post: How can I encode DVDs to play on Tivo?
Here's some instructions for preparing video for Tivo using Visualhub- it has a Tivo-specific setting, and will enable all the ... stuff that needs enabling. (I assumed you're on a Mac since you mentioned handbrake and streamclip.) I don't know if there's a way to get handbrake to encode properly for tivo- I don't see an mpeg-2 setting, and that's what it needs. If you use Mac the Ripper to rip the disc, Visualhub should be able to convert it. (I think streamclip will do it too, but... [more]

Ask post: Macbook External Speaker Buzz
I think I've had the same thing on my MBP (approx. same model as yours) though I didn't notice any increase in volume. I kept thinking it was a jack/wire problem, but the fact that it disappeared after playing any sound makes that seem less likely. Could this somehow be a result of a lack of input, as in, the sound card/output being somehow "asleep?" I don't know, just spitballin' here...

Ask post: When did movie soundtracks (on LP and CD) begin mixing in snippets of dialog from the film?
I used to have the soundtrack to M*A*S*H, which was. like the Apocalypse Now, the whole soundtrack. (Had that too.)(And Raiders of the Lost Ark.)

Ask post: Do we really need 300 music categories?
If browsing shows by category is an option, yes that's entirely too many. Or if the reader's use of the site depends on them knowing/agreeing with your categorization of a band/musician. Trees, subcategories, like everyone up there sez, would help.

Frinstance, if I missed a show by my favorite power-pop band because your editor had them categorized as pop-punk, or something like that, I would not be likely to use your site again.
posted to Ask Metafilter by jessenoonan at 11:43 AM on September 26, 2007
You are right. Your editor is wrong. Tell him I said so. Users will not appreciate 275 categories that are empty 50 weeks a year. If after the 3rd or 4th visit it's still empty, they won't check again. And users will view you much less favorably if your categorizations don't match their own.

Also, the people who would repeatedly check a genre that repeatedly comes up empty probably already have some other source of information just for fans of that particular genre.

Ask post: borrowed characters in movies
MIchael Keaton played the same character in Soderbergh's Out of Sight and Tarantino's Jackie Brown, but they're both based on Elmore Leonard books, so that's iffy.

Ask post: Shooting ranges in New Jersey?
My dad and I have had good experiences at Sunset Hill Shooting Range in the Poconos over the years. Might be a little far for you, but they do rent a variety of firearms and require a short safety training before they let you on the range.

And just think of how much easier the logistics are- no deciding who's gonna drive, no losing eachother in the crowd, etc. And as for keeping yourself entertained, just find a good spot to peoplewatch, that can be endlessly entertaining.

Ask post: Narrative/fiction movies with unexpected moments of "reality" or fourth wall-breaking or other interesting metaness?
More Karloff: playing aging horror star Byron Orlock in Peter Bogdanovich's Targets, with Bogdanovich as a young director trying to convince him to star in his next movie, ending with a scene at a drive-in where events onscreen and off interact.

I don't know from these "notes" and "octaves" and such and such, but at the end of "World's On Fire" from The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death, Paul Heaton of the Housemartins makes a very high-pitched sound for a very long time.

Ask post: How can I find more information about this Seneca Indian legend?
Check out Seneca Myths and Folk Tales on Google Books. Also The Pow-wow Book by A. M. Aurand. I didn't see anything in either of these on Google Books, but take a look. The Aurand book (and his others) are generally pretty available in tourist traps sown in PA Dutch country, maybe you'll be able to find them out there. Also, is there a Mercer County Historical Society? Maybe they have the downlow.... [more]

Ask post: Help Me Remember the Horror!
jasper411 has a good idea there- that's exactly what I was picturing when I read your description, but I couldn't remember the title.

And I remember Space Giants (the tv series) being on weekdays (I remember watching it at my grandma's house while my parents were at work) on (probably) WPHL (the only Philadelphia station we got, I think.) Of course I remember watching Ultraman at the same time. So I'm no help. And I've used up all my parentheses.

What La Cieca said, on all counts, and also what Burhanistan said. Wait 'til the tail end.

That said, go for stuff without too much narrative. Surf docs like Step into Liquid or Riding Giants (haven't seen that one, so I"m guessing) or animation with little story like Allegro Non Troppo or Triplets of Belleville.... [more]
