Okay, it
wasn't exactly
banned, but the new
Dove ad for their anti-aging products-- featuring tastefully nude older women-- was pre-emptively rejected by broadcast networks. Dove's
Campaign For Real Beauty shares
reactions, lets you meet
the cast, and
invites you to discuss. Previously on MetaFilter: Dove's short
"Evolution" about how
image-manipulation distorts beauty standards.

Hulk Rules! Hulk Hogan's memorable 1995 album examined, with audio samples. Not to be missed:
Hulkster in Heaven (YouTube), Hogan's soulful tribute to a young fan who died of cancer (
"I used to tear my shirt/ but now you've torn my heart/ I knew you were a Hulkamaniac/ right from the very start...") featuring the most ambitious gospel choir ever to back a professional wrestler. Further
appreciation and lyrics. Musical talent must
run in the family...

"I'm a control freak-- but I was not in control." Lars von Trier made his latest movie
without a cameraman. The Boss of It All (trailer), a comedy, was made with "Automavision", allowing a computer to decide when to tilt, pan, or zoom. The film also employs
Lookey, a game that
challenges the viewers to spot objects that don’t belong in a scene. The first viewer in Denmark to identify all the Lookeys correctly wins a cash prize and a chance to be an extra in von Trier’s next film.

”Björk's album covers have always been visual feasts, reflecting the spirit of the music inside while helping to maintain Björk's status as a brilliant artist.” Artwork released for Björk’s upcoming album,
Volta, was widely assumed to be the new cover. Thus,
the official cover that’s been revealed has divided, dismayed, amused, or delighted fans and critics all over the place in the past couple of weeks. Pitchfork interviews Björk herself on the album-cover and more, and she talks about the making of
Volta here:
Part I,
Part II (YouTube).

Speaking of the White House Egg Roll... The GLBT organization
Family Pride plans to once again fill the annual event with
hundreds of gay and lesbian families. What many welcome as a rare opportunity to be included as
legitimate American families in a historic national tradition is seen by opponents as the
crude politicizing of a children's event.

"...People do have an attitude of curiosity toward me. They say, 'This guy looks funny, he looks too young, he looks like a woman, but I can't be sure.'"
Jimmy Scott's unforgettable voice has
inspired generations of singers-- both male and female-- from the 1940's to present day (he worked with David Lynch on a song for "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me," and is still making recordings). Read his
bittersweet story on his official website. Born with Kallman Syndrome
[Wikipedia], his voice has remained the undiluted, soaring soprano that he's had since childhood. A couple of mp3's
here, as well as
the inevitable YouTubery.

Jennifer Holliday's seismic performance of

New York City's oldest fireboat rides again. Built in 1931, the
John J. Harvey served for decades, then was retired by the city in 1994. Local boat-lovers rescued it from the scrap-yard and
restored it to
new glory. Good thing, because the ancient JJH wound up being called back into service one last time, to save New Yorkers during
their darkest hour...
The city has showed its gratitude with grant money, and the JJH's story has now become an award-winning
children's book praised as a healthy way to discuss the events of September 11th with kids. Come to Pier 63 for
a visit or a free ride sometime this summer!

dreamed of, The Who

desperate to avoid. Transactionism is an observation of art, the artist/patron relationship, and our own values,
