Ask post: Gift For Li'l Landlord?
Making a mixed CD of lullabys or other soothing music for late night feedings might be nice, cheap, but still thoughtful.

Ask post: You scare me and I don't want to talk to you.
I'm a freelancer and one of the ad agencies I work with uses Basecamp, a web-based project management system. They are slowly inviting clients into the system to add messages, review comps, etc.

If you could set up something like that, you have a perfect opportunity to direct clients to communicate exclusively that way because every contact is captured and is there for reference. It becomes a benefit you are offering vs. a restriction.

Ask post: My poor little bear
Since he's a male, you may want to consider the surgery. I know it's expensive - been there/done that thrice! - but because the enlarged prostate gland can impede the flow of urine and cause much more dire problems, if his general health is up to it, I would consider it. I used Lupron shots on my guy after his surgery to repress regrowth.

I now have females and use Lupron exclusively on the one with adrenal disease. Hair has grown back and she's in fine fettle!... [more]

Ask post: Help me finish books!
Just a thought, but maybe it doesn't have anything to do with the books? I notice I become hyper-aware of how little is "left" when I'm coming to the end of a book or movie I'm enjoying. Maybe you're subconsciously resisting finishing?

Ask post: 14 yr old daughter wants a ferret.
I currently have two ferrets and have had four in total.

First, ferrets are not for everyone. They require specialized care and can suffer from very expensive health problems. You have to really want to be a ferret owner. Also, ferrets will be much happier in multiples. They need the company of their own kind. So think in twos or not at all.

That said, to answer your questions:

They sleep approx. 18-20 hours out of every... [more]

Ask post: A great tan without the sweat?
Get yourself some Jergen's Natural Glow. You use it like a moisturizer, it's white colored, but over the course of a week your skin tone subtly changes to a very natural tan. Comes in several different shades to match your skin tone and now has a version for faces.

No orange, so streaks, no abrupt lines. Explains why you could never find it on the store shelves last year.

Ask post: Extra Gentle Shampoo / Conditioners for Color Treated Hair?
I've read that the ingredient you want to avoid in shampoo is Sodium Laureth Sulfate. It's really just a detergent and strips the hair of healthy oils. So if you see that as a primary ingredient, that might be one to skip!

Ask post: Working with a client in Switzerland?
A little Googling may allow you to confirm their legitimacy.

As far as payment, I would propose a half up front, half on completion (or thirds) scheme to allay your fears. And don't start work until you've received the first payment. This is really a standard business arrangement and if it is made an issue by your potential client, I might consider that a red flag.

Just finished a freelance project for a new client in the Netherlands and all went perfectly.

Ask post: I slit the sheet, the sheet I slit, and on the slitted sheet I sit.
I second the Beech sheets from BB&B. The slinky/ slideyness of silk but the touch of light flannel. Only downside, it tends to pill at the heavy traffic foot end of the bed.

I'm a sleep fanatic and recently upgraded my mattress to a pillow-top. Ooooooh, nice! Squishy top but still firm support underneath. Ask post: Just show me how to whistle...
My technique is to touch my middle finger to my thumb and like I'm making a circle and then press the joint between the two back against the tip of my tongue until the fingers are inside my mouth and I can curl my lips down over them. The tongue is in a wave shape. Blow with quite a bit of force. Make small adjustments until you produce a whistle.

Grew up in NYC hailing cabs this way, so this is a proven whistle!

Ask post: will it ever be the great ponytail holder in the sky?
I use a type of scrunchy that has the elastic encased in a loose fabric sleeve. That way there is no contact between the hair and the elastic. Sorry, don't have or remember a brand name, but I use these to put my hair up in a bun and it works well for gym and sleeping bun purposes!

Ask post: Chin up, old boy!
Sometimes I find it helpful to reverse my mode of thinking. In your case - what if you met someone who only looked at the bright side of life? Who only saw the most positive, affirming stories in the news everyday and thought the outlook on all fronts was great.

You'd think their worldview was unrealistic and extreme, right? Not reflective of the balance of good and bad that can be found in most situations? You would probably say they have a skewed perspective. Exactly.... [more]

Ask post: Why shorten "Democratic"?
I believe it is to separate the use of the term democratic (small d) from the Democratic Party. So you can praise the democratic process or the encouragement of democratic institutions in the Middle East, for example, without an implicit endorsement of the Democratic Party.

And that is my very diplomatic attempt to explain this linguistic bs. :)

Ask post: Why does a sandwich taste better if someone else makes it?
WAG: The element of surprise? If you make it yourself, you have an expectation about how it will taste and unless something conflicts with that expectation, your tastebuds go on autopilot.

If someone else makes the sandwich, you are actually tasting it and so your experience is more heightened.

Or maybe I'm full of it!

In the underlying issues area, many people with pervasive clutter are also perfectionists as counterintuituive as that may seem. They get bound up in the feeling if I can't completely clean everything perfectly right now, why should I start - i.e., getting overwhelmed. If this strikes a chord, you might start by redefining a new "clean enough" standard for yourselves.

I've been trolling in iTunes - which I think you can access via download regardless of whether you have an iPod. I browse around in the Celebrity and iMix mixes for people who seem to have similar tastes to mine and then I just start listening to their chosen songs. From there I can learn more about new-to-me artists and see who fans of those artists also like.

Also the Gnod site queries you for three artists you like and then makes a series of suggestions.... [more]

Ask post: How can I set my mental alarm clock?
I wouldn't call what I do a technique, but I hate beyond all reason the sound of an alarm - any alarm. So although I set the alarm, I generally wake up spontaneously 5-10 minutes in advance and relish the fact I get to turn the wretched thing off. It generally takes a little more consciousness to turn an alarm off vs. just hitting the snooze. Maybe that's why it works as not just a wake up but a get up method.
