Fever at night, but morning's alright

When I'm battling an infection/virus for a few days, my body temperature climbs as the sun goes down. My village elders tell me this is normal. Why do fevers get worse after sundown, but subside in the morning?

Fatherly is to Patriarch as Wealthy is to ???

A patriarch is the top father-figure, the peerless dad. I used the word "plutarch" to mean someone of peerless wealth, mixing "plutocracy" and "patriarch"... but it turns out the only Plutarch is a Greek biographer. What word should I use?

What native plants can make a lawn in Montreal?

I have dirt in my front yard! Rather not grow (Kentucky blue) grass lawn this far north in Montreal. What's a native hearty plant that will serve a soft green bed?

Why do I have a headwind in both directions?

I'm living the "uphill both ways" joke. I cycle to work, and I've always got a headwind, every day, in both directions. Why?

If A or B, then C. A,B are what?

Vocabulary filter: if items 1,2,3,4 together bring about A, then 1,2,3,4 can be called the "prerequisites" of A. If any one or more of 1,2,3,4 bring about A, but not necessarily all, what name would I use for 1,2,3,4 ?

Why top "40" ?

America's Top 40 is an institution, since the 1970s. The UK had it's top music charts, but around 1971 lists of 40 songs seemed to become popular. I know the 40 are a subset of Billboard's 100, but why 40? Why did 40 become more popular than 75, 50, 20 or 12?

Shopping for a beanbag chair

I live in a bigger place now, and I'm fond of bean bag chairs. The Sumo was recommended to me, but I don't remember from where (although I know it wasn't Penny Arcade). Can I get some recommendations for beanbag chairs, such as what to look for or brands worth examining?

How to print sideways? Print upside-down?

I can borrow MS Word, I've got OpenOffice at home. How can lay out paragraphs of text so that I can print upside-down on a page?

temporary colour blindness?

I woke up one morning, one eye at a time, with a view of my girlfriend's face. Through one eye, she looked a bit rosy in her cheeks and on her ear, a healthy-looking woman. Switching to the other eye, her skin was pale, and the blush was gone. Surprised, I propped myself up and looked at a red pillow next to my bed: one eye bright red, and through the other a washed out ruddy colour. My eyes seem fine now, but is that all in my head? What happened to my eyes that morning?

Who offers secondary-only domain name service?

I manage my own DNS for domain names (I'm a tecchie, I know what I'm doing and jumping through someone else's hoops for DNService has always ended in tears). I've only got the one machine at a co-loc, and registrars get cranky if you give only one authoritative DNS server, or two that are in the same net segment. Where does a nerd get some reliable secondary DNS? The dozen places I've checked out so far insist that I move all my DNS to them, when all I want is for them to mirror my zones.

Active Directory (LDAP) + Linux = passwords?

Where do I find doccos that tell me how to authenticate my PAM-capable unix boxen against Microsoft's Active Directory?

Who in Montréal would take cellphones for charity?

Giving celphones to charity in Montréal? I've heard of women's shelters accepting and/or refurbishing celphones so that battered wives can call for help.

USB key drive dual-boot?

Work gave me a 1GB keydrive for carrying personal files. What I'd adore is using it to carry around a rescue disk such as one of the many tiny bootable Linux distributions.

What navy rank's epaulet is three bars, with a circle that has an X inside?

I purchased a navy surplus coat, and it came with epaulets. I've been wearing them sometimes, and strangers jokingly call me "captain" on the street. I'd like to know what rank these epaulets truly are.

What's a male "Betty" called?

My friend DJ just got a snowboard with a pretty girl painted on it, and she's named it "Betty" after the surfer slang for a good-looking woman. What's the equivalent to "Betty" in surfer lingo to describe a good-looking man?
