Spammers ruin everything: how do I stop them from abusing mailing list signups?

On our website, we've got a little one-field form where people can fill in their e-mail address and sign up for our mailing list. The form seems to now be the target of spammer-hacker bastards, and random people are complaining about being signed up for a list they've never heard of. What should we do, besides take down the form altogether? The only thing that comes to mind is a captcha (but that adds another step to what should be a one-step process).

Put the left trigger to the plastic casing: driving cars with game controllers?

Aside from the problem of retraining people to use the new system, and the problems inherent in any drive-by-wire system, is there anything stopping us from using Playstation and Xbox controllers to drive cars?

Like Starship Troopers meets Gordon Frohman!

BookFilter: I read an odd science fiction book when I was younger, but then it got lost in a move long ago and ever since I've been wondering what it was.

Nurses speak out: Grey's Anatomy sucks, Sonic Youth rules

The Center for Nursing Advocacy seems like your typical professional advocacy group—the group's mandate is "to increase public understanding of the central, front-line role nurses play in modern health care." While often the group does its work by highlighting serious issues facing the nursing profession, the Center also keeps a watchful eye on portrayals of nurses in popular culture, both good and bad. And then there are the reviews that, frankly, seem to be stretching things just a bit.

Windows XP can't keep its windows straight!

Bizarre Windows XP behavior: when switching between applications, sometimes more than one window will pop to the foreground. Huh?

Can you also shoot a man in Vegas just to watch him die?

[VegasFilter] A friend of mine is heading to Las Vegas for a rock climbing trip with a buddy in March/April. He wants to know about interesting and crazy things to do in Vegas that don't involve drinking or gambling.

Stuck on you 'till the end of time: getting glue residue out of my optical drive.

My DVDs are stuck, part two: I figured out what's wrong with my optical drives, and now I'm wondering if there's an easier way to fix them.

Waste not, want not

Remedial physics and sustainability: if energy is neither created nor destroyed, why do we have an energy crisis? Much more extensive question follows:

Help me find an abortion documentary.

Inspired by this question, I'm trying to find a documentary on abortion I saw in university that is somewhat similar to The Abortion Diaries.

Quick question about HTML entities: are they no...

Quick question about HTML entities: are they no longer accepted in comments? I've been trying to use em-dashes like so: [ampersand] [pound sign] 8212 [semi-colon] and this has worked fine until recently. But lately, I've left a trail of comments with ugly "8212;"s all over the place, as if the [ampersand] and [pound sign] were stripped off before post (but after the inline preview).

I think my optical drives are trying to eat my CDs.

I've had two DVD drives exhibit the same odd behavior when ejecting discs, and I can't figure out how to stop it.

Widescreen Wacom on a 4:3 screen?

I'm considering buying a Wacom tablet. I've found the Intuos3 6x11 for the same price (actually slightly cheaper!) than the Intuos3 6x8. I don't have a widescreen display. Will I be able to use the 6x11 effectively?

The Soledad O'Brien Effect

Say that interethnic breeding has created a homogenous-looking mixed-race human species in the far-flung future. What kind of effect would this have on biodiversity?

Keeping continuity on a non-scripted show

TVFilter: I caught the tail end of a reality show on the Discovery Channel and noticed a continuity person in the credits. Continuity? On a reality show?
