Oh, I dunno. SKF has made me a fair bit of money on the pivot days. But overall I agree. I'm not holding anything overnight at the moment.

Electric dog fence
How big is their property? We have 50 acres and just had the invisible fence people come and tell us that to wire 22 acres of it was fine.
The limiting factor is the gauge of wire you use (which affects the overall resistance of the loop) so you can probably expand the loop by using a heavier wire.

The OP is probably asking about so-called invisible fences. These use a buried or ground-level wire to transmit a radio-frequency signal which is picked up by a receiver attached to the dog's collar. As the dog approaches the wire, the receiver emits a warning sound. If the dog continues, it administers a 'correction' which is painful for the dog.

Fino a go go
Unfortunately Amontillados and Manzanillas don't do it for me at all... it's that bone dry taste with the heady Flor nose that knocks me out. I've been drinking the Alvear, which is really excellent and an incredible bargain at the LCBO but I will have to ferret out some Tio Pepe. I am a long way from a decent Vintates. Maybe my local LCBO will order though.

Why are you singing that way?
I think one of the points is that the musician is improvising, but singing shows that s/he knows what he's going to play before he plays it, even if only for a split second. This doesn't sound very surprising, except that a lot of rock players use fingering patterns rather than playing a tune in their head, and would be very hard pressed to sing along with what they're playing.
For example, imagine singing an improvised solo, then playing the exact same thing on the... [more]

Best mileage when traveling with a bike
Yup, rear mount produces a lot less drag. The main disadvantage of rear mount is when you are driving in wet winter weather and the bikes get covered with road salt. Some people also worry about getting rear ended or the bikes being more easily stolen, but I've always preferred it (although the bikes go in the back of my pickup now).

Strange. I've no idea what thats about. The rentachicken domain is purely the result of reading a list of domains registered during the dot com era that had recently expired, combined with being slightly worse for drink at the time.

You know, for kitchens!
Well, the climate control is because different foods want to be stored in different humidities and different temperatures. Think about a wine cooler. It stores white wine at 41 degrees or so, red wine at 50 degrees or so. Room temp in an air conditioned house is 68-72 degrees F. Plus many foods will dry out quickly in an air-conditioned home.

I'm thinking separate compartments that leverage the technology to produce microclimates for different kinds of food. I'd even be open to including CO2 or N2 atmostpheres for the super high end model (eg my buddy has an apple storage facility which is refrigerated and has an N2 atmosphere... the apples will keep basically forever).

Dating for the relatively grounded?
Healthy relationships are just, better.
They happen. You'll know, because you feeling bad, or the other person feeling bad, will not be a fundamental mode of the relationship. You'll feel good most of the time with that person and they will feel good most of the time with you.
it took me a long while to realize that. When you find a relationship like that, seize it and do not let go.

Index fund advice, please.
Putting $ in index funds is a good idea. It's simple... open a discount brokerage account, buy the fund, you're done.
HOWEVER the question is which index fund. If you were to put all your $ in a US equities index right now you'd stand a pretty good chance of being wiped out semi-completely if/when the dollar collapses and GD2 (the second great depression) ensues. Not saying it's gonna happen, but many people privately think it may. It's not a great time to be in US... [more]

If you want to fire and forget for the next 20 years, an S&P index is (probably) safer than a Latin American fund. If you're willing to change funds once every three months or so, there are vastly better places to have your money. I don't think most Americans have the slightest conception of how much trouble their economy is really in.

I don't want to get into a pissing match with Justinian. I just happen to think that 'index fund' doesn't have to mean the S&P 500 and that if you're willing to do some minimal research you may find more interesting places to put your money, especially if you're young. For ETFs, I like what iShares is doing. I think you are on the right track.

Would it be absolutely ludicrous to look into buying a car that takes premium fuel in this day and age?
My last truck (an old 4Runner) wanted premium. I grew to hate paying the extra. My new truck (a Nissan Frontier) takes regular. It's a gas guzzling beast but at least I don't have to watch the premium dials go round.
Shuddering above 45 mph could be a whole bunch of things, including stuck brake calipers heating up a brake rotor which warps as it gets hot. If it was a Toyota, I'd say take it to a dealer. Being as it's a Chevy Cav, I second your idea of buying a new car.... [more]

On this issue of photographing and keeping photographs of people, this is an increasingly complicated part of Canadian law and you should check with the Privacy Commissioner about where things stand. I'd like to reiterate what others have said: whatever you might think, cops are notoriously bad sources of legal advice. They are often badly taught, and even then it's generally only the law that is specifically applicable to their duties as a police officer. I say that having spent several months, if not years, riding in cop cars with cops of different flavors, and with a deep appreciation for how difficult and shitty it is to be a police officer.

How did you play sports in your neighborhood?
If you're drunk enough, or a young enough, I give you British Bulldog.
Wikipedia has it exactly right: "The game is characterised by its high level of violence and physicality". I still have scars from playing it.
I'm sort of amazed it's never become a big spectator sport. It is astoundingly violent.

NB Wikipedia omits the detail I remember most vividly: the bulldogs linking themselves together in a huge chain between you and the other side of the field, through which you are expected to burst.
The violence comes from the fact that the bulldogs have to chant "British Bulldog! One, Two, Three!" while hanging on to you. Needless to say, the temptation is to use Ultimate Fighting Skills to get the buggers off you and make it to the safe area.

Do chinese people get sick of eating chinese food?
I grew up in a small town in the north of England. My parents (this is the 70s) were terrified of eating anything they weren't used to. Anyway, you don't mention whether it's 1/4" or 1/2" or 1" or 2" reel to reel and the answer is kind of important. Then there's the format -- 1/4" could be stereo or 4-track. 1/2" could be 8 or (I think) 16 track and so on. 1/4" is good news. There are lots of those machines around. I'd still have mine if I hadn't had to move country. The recording could be stereo or 4-track. I don't know if this is universally true but the stereo machines I used actually recorded 4 tracks, like on cassette, two on one half of the tape running one way, and two on the other half running the other way. The 4-tracks just recorded all 4 tracks in the same direction.

b) a large part of how good this looks will depend upon the ambient light level in your loft. The lower the better. So a good blackout is essential, especially if you intend to play during the day.
c) a big image demands a big sound system so don't neglect the audio. In fact, great audio may be more important for immersion than great video.

I would definitely replace the Bontrager crankset with the Hollowtech. It's going to be waaay better. Facing is only necessary on new frames. If a crankset has already been installed it's going to be fine. If you meet resistance when installing the outboard bearings you can take it down to the local bike store to get faced, but I'd be amazed if it was necessary.
