MeFi post: ...even after five agonizing years of the Iraq War, a summer blockbuster isn't prepared to say that not only is its action hero is corrupt, he's corrupt because America has become corrupt.
Joy, joy, joy. Here we are. Yet again. Watching the whole comic-fanboy V's movie crowd go at each other in some mastabatory frenzy of "they forgot X", "they totally misunderstood Y", "Man, they really fucked up Z - that's totally not what the whole mythos was about". Plus, we also have critics coming out of the woodwork and complaining about either too much or too little propaganda. Or something. You're entitled to your opinions. You can take them to your... In a similar vein (heh) our friends at EnglishRussia have a video (with cheesy soundtrack) of a robo-snake. Looks something between a prehensile penis and one of Cthulhu's tentacles. Cue Snakes-Onna-Plane jokes...

I just came across this via JayIsGames and thought it was so cute. The artwork is really lovely. I wish there were more fun little things like this. And no, I have no shame about playing a kids game. Because it's just that damn cute.

Heh, well my old hippy school didn't bother teaching grammar and I was too busy passing notes to pay attention in math, so yeah - I got a few wrong too.

MeFi post: Australian Federal Election
Words fail to convey my utter disgust at the quality of the line-up this election. I don't believe I've ever seen such a collection of arse-kissing, mealy-mouthed, self-important tossers in my life. Policies aside, it's come down to choosing between the lesser of the two weevils. FAN-tastic.

I plan on spending election night getting pissed. If anyone cares to join the wake, drop me an line - email is in the profile.

MeFi post: Put The Post In The Basket
Thanks guys - my Quickflix list looks like a study in depravity so I'm sure to have some fun flick-watching ahead of me.

And yes, I'm n-thing "The Reflecting Skin". I saw it about 15 years ago and there are some scenes that make me squirm even now; the accused father drinking petrol and setting himself alight, the toad-inflation and subsequent popping with a slingshot... There was never anything scary per se but jesus, that movie freaked me the heck out.

MeFi post: What The Fuck?
I tend to sound fairly British and the accent gets more cut-glass the more angry I am. Never underestimate the power of an articulate dressing-down combined with a few well-placed (and timed) "you stupid fucking cunt" or variations thereof. There's something about the sudden vulgarity amid otherwise perfect enunciation that makes "fuck" that slightly more shocking.

And while we're all having a go, you can all fuck off and die you pathetic crew of... [more]

Where are the people who eat cold left-overs for breakfast? Did I miss them? This morning's breakfast was three left-over sausages with plenty of onion gravy in a bowl with some peas and corn, a bucket of sweet milky tea and the small left-over piece of merlot-chocolate that I somehow missed yesterday.

Where are the eaters of cold pizza out of a box that's been left on the coffee table all night? Where are the curry-munchers who prefer cold Thai with extra chilli to... [more]

For anyone interested in this stuff, you might like the book "The War Magician" by David Fisher about Jasper Maskelyne. The account of how he made the entire port of Alexandria vanish and reappear several miles further down the coast of Egypt is great stuff.

MeFi post: I have always thought that there is no more fruitful source of family discontent than a housewife’s badly-cooked dinners and untidy ways.
Thanks so much for posting this. I have most of a copy of the 1898 edition (missing its front cover and entire index) and it's scary reading at times. I've never been game enough to try any of the recipes included but the book as a whole (particularly the notes for servants and the portion at the front detailing what a good kitchen should have in it) is such a fascinating read. A snapshot of the times, indeed.

MeFi post: The revolution will be hard-bound and highlighted
I work for an academic bookshop and I'm slowly seeing a trend away from texts as the new crop of more technology-savvy lecturers starts to percolate up the ivory tower.

A large percentage of lecturers at my particular institution produce their own notes which are printed and bound pretty much at cost via the Uni Printery. People don't mind paying between $10 and $40 for a bound collection of photocopies when the alternative is a $150 text. Even here, some lecturers... [more]

Oh noes! I remember walking around this ship when my parents clubbed together their savings and went on the World Trip. I was 9 years old and fascinated by it. I particularly remember how low the ceilings were and loved how I had no problems but all the adults on the tour kept bopping their heads. The smell of wax, oil, hemp, leather and much sweat was amazing.

Fare thee well, Cutty Sark. A Viking end for a proud ship.

MeFi post: Kava Abuse in Australian Aboriginal Communities
I tried kava very recently after doing a lot of research. The effects are very slight but when you're really keyed up from chronic anxiety and depression, the feeling of calmness and relaxation that it gives is very welcome. This often carries over to the next day without impairing my reaction time and motor functions - something that alcohol always does for me.

My two cents, but is there's any thought given as to why people feel the need to medicate themselves to... [more]

Bugbread: I wasn't trying to imply that nothing is being done. It is (non-sniffable petrol, alcohol-free zones, counselling etc) and it occaisionally works. The problem that I have with the article is that the community knew that there were already rampaging substance abuse problems and they brought in a brand new substance. Which, surprise, is now being abused. So the Powers That Be ban it and, surprise, there's a thriving black market. So the answer, obviously, is to licence it and make... [more]

MeFi post: You got your drugs in my candy!
God god. Flashback to the late 70's when I was a kid and there were rumours circulating about nefarious milkbar operators putting drugs into milkshakes and selling them to kids to get them hooked.

What the drugs were, where this was happening, and why no-one could explain why "they" were giving away their drugs (or selling $20 milkshakes) - it didn't matter. It stems from the same stupid urban-legend crap perpetuated by people who must have made-up... [more]

MeFi post: Glassy Eats
Well, I'm slightly disappointed that the "stacking food on enormous plates into tiny-but-very-tall towers" is being taken over by a different fad as I was just about to take delivery of a tiny wrecking ball.

Now, we're throwing food into glasses (how wacky!), throwing foam on it (someone owns either a Cuisenart or a cappuccino machine - woohoo!) and presenting it with instructions on how to eat the damn thing - just in case you weren't insulting the diner... [more]

inconsequentialist: Fair point, but (personally, obviously) what happened to displaying the stuff on a plate so you could see it properly? One of the best meals of my life was a square of beef in aspic trimmed and served with warm baby carrots, some fresh steamed french beans, and some amazingly tiny new potatoes in their skin which had been drizzled with a little herbed butter. On, and a little side salad of greens with a vinaigrette. It was all arranged on the plate like a still life and... [more]

I'd very much like to point people to "Day by Day Armageddon". The forums are a goldmine of survival information, and you get a nice big slice of his novel to read online. MeFi post: Free The Bile Bears
There is actually some evidence to say that bear bile has benefit for a few liver and gall-bladder illnesses. People tend to be prescribed ursodiol which is the synthetic version. I know this because I can't legally have this prescribed to me in Australia for my gallstones, but I apparently I can get traditional medicine which would presumably contain bits of bear. Unfortunately, I think it still takes potable water to make Soylent Green, and it's potable water we're running out of the fastest.

Steve CDB: I don't think genetic engineering is going to help in this instance when the issue is mostly the method rather than the crop. Australia did once have an inland sea, so no matter how salt-resistant the plants might be, as soon as you put water into the soil, there's going to be an issue.

And, just as... [more]
