Keep those pinchers to yourself, mister.

Where in L.A. can I get my body fat measured by water immersion?

The Skylark speaks in tongues.

Romanian speakers, get your radio ears on. What's she singing? I'm trying to discern the name of this folk tune. (nb.: Radio Romania itself is useless for this. No e-mail contact info on their Web site and no links or information to the "Skylark" radio program.)

This ain't your Auntie Dennitsa's harvest song. (Or maybe it is.)

Bulgarian speakers: What song is this?

The Tin-Horn Nuisance.

Help me locate contemporary marching bands (or recordings thereof) who perform on turn-of-the-century instruments (ca. 1916).

Powerful, Web-friendly media indexing?

I work on the production team for a long-running public radio program. We have a massive archive of shows in digital format (MP3 and AIFF) which we need to collate into a powerful and highly flexible database - something like iTunes, but much more advanced. Does a program exist to do this?

May the road Powerise with you.

So, I'm taking up powerbocking. As an athletic 31yo male (obsessive biker, reasonable runner, maintenance lifter) with a good sense of balance, how would you current users rate the learning curve? Assuming I put in one or two nights a week over the next six months, might I learn enough to get fluent (if not a little flashy) in time for a certain outdoor event in August? Thoughts, anecdotes, tips, and the like are welcome. (Bonus points to Angelenos who can tell me about nice indoor padded spaces where I can go to practice...)

An audiovisual history of the National Institute...

At The Tone An audiovisual history of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's twin radio stations, WWV and WWVH: 51 tracks spanning 50 years, a 5,000-word essay, and a deluxe, full-color 32-page booklet crammed with ephemera. Produced with the full cooperation of NIST. To be released on May 5, 2008. (Only eight years late! This was previously announced for publication in May 2000...)

I'll wait (tables) in the pouring sun.

I've just moved to L.A. and need immediate employment to provide some short-term financial security. Locals, who (or what) would you recommend? (e.g., What are the least insane and/or most humane temp agencies? What are some cool places to do menial, customer-facing work that actually pay a living wage?)

"I won't linger over any tragedies that were."

With a powerful, breathtakingly adorned voice that bore considerable influence on contemporary vocal icons such as Liz Fraser, Jeff Buckley, and Antony Hegarty, the late Sandy Denny packed a considerable body of work (and a seemingly equal number of untoward stories) into a decade-long career before her death at age 31 in 1978.

This is the time. And this is the record of the time.

MeFi Trainspotting Dept.: While most music consumers long ago traded up their sonically dodgy, graphically threadbare, non-bonus-enhanced early CD pressings of their favorite albums, a subculture has naturally arisen to absorb their discarded digital detritus. Witness "Target CDs", a family which encompasses certain early West German and Japanese pressings on the Warner/Elektra/Atlantic (WEA) labels. So named for their distinctive label design, Target CDs - unlike, say, MFSL Gold CDs - make no particular claim to superior fidelity or longevity; in fact, due to their notorious "flat transfer" process from whatever version of the album happened to be lying around, it seems quite the opposite. (Further evidence for the purely nostalgic and/or aesthetic value of these discs can be seen in the "hypothetical Target CDs" threads.) Even so, as within any oddball subculture of collectordom, one can now expect to lay out serious bucks for certain of these shiny little period pieces.

Shortwavemusic is a newly-revived sound blog...

Shortwavemusic Shortwavemusic is a newly-revived sound blog featuring music and/or musical noise intercepted via shortwave radio. Qu'ran chants, Russian piano ballads, Bulgarian vocal folksong, Indian film music swathed in shifting layers of cottony noise: it's an under-explored alternative for sound junkies with the right balance of adventurousness, patience, imagination, and an appreciation for the inexplicable.

le monde du bruit

RF Filter (literally): I'm using my trusty Sony ICF-2010 shortwave radio (1990 vintage) with a brand-new Edirol R-09 digital recorder. Unfortunately, once I hook up the R-09, it spits up digital noise all over the bands.

Keep Laughing

Another one from the Retrospective. Written when I was 15, I always considered this song to be a more or less blatant ripoff of Lush's “For Love.” The original lyrics were even more painfully awkward than these are, and I was stuck for years on how to improve upon them, but desperation finally took precedence over inspiration: I was literally scribbling them at stop lights on my way to the studio. Not a creative high point, then, but the production is among my sharpest. To their credit, the Science Park line-up of that time made a huge impact.

Ascension Island

In the late '90s, I was the main guy behind an electronic art-pop band called Science Park. After suffering a nervous breakdown in the winter of 2000, I disbanded the group and retreated from the music industry for six arduous years. Now thirty, I've just issued a 15-year retrospective of my life in sound and have re-committed myself to my life's work with a raft of new projects. "Ascension Island" was first issued on a Japanese 7" single on Motorway Records in 2000, and later on my album Disinformation (Obscure-Disk). A tale of love, espionage, and violence always just out of sight, it features my trademark drifting electronics, shortwave radio interceptions, and cool, clean singing. Enjoy.

The dance of Heaven's ghosts

I have a strange affection for the syrupy, slightly outdated, epic-sounding vocal pop of female singers like Eleni Vitali (Greece), Selda Bagcan (Turkey), Lata Mangeshkar (India), and the like. Who else would you recommend in this line?

BostonFilter: I'm annoyed that I can't find info about this online anywhere, but is the MBTA doing their usual fare-free subway and bus rides on Earth Day this year (4/22)?
