Ask post: Cubase + (??) = Instant multi-track magic!
We'll need it going forward anyway, as we're moving a great majority of our production in-house. This isn't just for one-time use.

Ask post: Concatenating a bunch of WAV files
foobar2000 will do this. Drag your files into the queue window, highlight the files you want to concatenate (or select all the usual way, Ctrl-A), right-click and select "Convert > Convert to Single File." Ta-da.

Ask post: Sweaty cyclist seeks advice
I bike 30 miles a day. No showers either. But I work at a place that doesn't even have a dress code, so I can wear whatever I want when I get there. I get away with a sink-water wipedown with a damp towel, a good face scrub, and some effective deodorant.

In terms of biking gear, go with what's comfortable. Wicking clothes are the best for dissipating heat and moisture, but more often than not I just wear cotton tank tops and running shorts which don't chafe. YMMV.... [more]

Ask post: I need a bag to carry gym stuff and work stuff.
I use the Wenger Pegasus. It has a separate compartment for your laptop (with a snapover harness to keep it upright), plus two HUGE additional compartments for clothes, shoes, books, whatever, and side pockets for keys, sunglasses, iPod, etc. The thing seems to expand endlessly and has Camelbak-style padded vents on the back for ease of carriage when you overstuff it. I routinely pack my computer, change of clothes, lunch, bike padlock, etc., into mine every day for my 23-mile bike commute, and... [more]

The Catherine Wheel - My Big Hands
The Knee Plays - Tree
Rei Momo - Dirty Old Town

Well, if you count performance as a "visual" art, this book has a huge section devoted to interviewing artists and their relationship to food - both personally and in their work.

Ask post: Explaining a unique and ubiquitous kind of stuttering on public radio?
I'm a post-production editor for an NPR program.

Yes, we definitely take out the stutters and other verbal tics. It makes the speaker sound more coherent and (more importantly) shaves off precious, precious seconds to adhere to the broadcast clock. If it sounds unnatural, we leave them in where the flow demands - people sound too robotic if you take this to extremes.

For shows which don't employ their own editing staff, Language Removal Services... [more]

Ask post: Ooh, what's inside there?
In one of the more fascinating bits of "What are they building in there?," there's an oil well hidden behind the walls of a major Los Angeles shopping center. (Related: More hidden oil architecture in L.A.)

Ask post: Yalers or Whalers?
West Hartford is fine, but it's tiny. And it cannot make up for the sheer void that is Hartford.

Nice coffee shops in Hartford? There's one: Tisane. And that's on the West Hartford border.

Biking paths? Well, there are a few nice parks and good hikes within a drive from Hartford, but the closest you'll get is the reservoir... in West Hartford. Which is shared with pedestrians, if memory serves.

Ask post: Early anarchist songs?
Sorry these aren't precise answers. I'm throwing darts with only one eye.

It's a stretch, but Chumbawamba's English Rebel Songs 1381-1984 may have something of this, albeit in an irreverent acappella post-punk sort of fashion.

This Google Calendar item, of all things, refers to a CD of Yiddish protest songs recorded on wax cylinder. You may want to dig around a bit more on that.

This NYT article goes on at length about... [more]

Ask post: First-timer going to Burning Man needs advice
Well, you say you've been to the BM site, but I will reiterate - because it really tells you just about everything about being a first-timer - read the First Timer's Guide. It tells you exactly what to bring, what to expect, how to prepare, etc. That guide was written by real people, after all, who have all been first-timers at one point or another. It's not written for insiders.

Well, I'll see if I can rustle up the source audio and perhaps find some narration after the song - I don't recall there being any, but it's worth a playback...

All righty, I went back and squinted at the source audio. I hadn't given it a shot for a while, but I believe the artist I'm looking for is Ileana Constantinescu. Now, of course, I only have to find her albums, which is proving just as difficult as identifying this song in the first place! The announcer only says that it's one of her "elegiac songs."

Ask post: Recommend pants for hot weather.
Natural High (2400 Main Street, Santa Monica) sells these amazing hemp/cotton pants. They're super-light and have drawstrings. They can be a bit naturally baggy, but they're easy enough to have hemmed for a few extra bucks. They come in all sorts of earthy colors and the styles even vary from batch to batch, as they're handmade. They sell nice shirts and such as well, if you're after an ensemble. I own three pairs and keep going back for more.... [more]

Sussan Deyhim, Iran (Warning: worst video accompaniment ever)

Ask post: This ain't your Auntie Dennitsa's harvest song. (Or maybe it is.)
Sorry, I should have clarified. It is indeed the German-language service of Radio Bulgaria. The song itself is definitely in Bulgarian.

I have extensive familiarity with Bulgarian music myself and have contacts with some of the most prominent ethnomusicologists working in the region, and nobody's familiar with this little number. I even asked Radio Bulgaria, but got no reply.

For neophytes, indeed. Others watching this thread should explore that site with impunity. I have over 50 CDs of Bulgarian music already - entirely on Bulgarian record labels and performed in both the pre- and post-Communist styles - and this song doesn't appear anywhere.

I would imagine it depends on the market you're in. I was paying $75/hour for my Bally's trainer in Cambridge, MA, back in the day (2005). They also have different tiers of trainers and different methods of training - alone, in small groups, etc. - so you may just want to ask what they're currently offering or see if they have any deals. (Look online first, as many gyms have Web specials that you don't get as a walk-in.)

Volunteer.

I spent my early 20s as a full-time musician/songwriter and needed work when I wasn't on the road or preoccupied with recording. When I finally grew weary of the pop life, as it were, I had - like you - a few years of great life experiences, but not so much currency in the working world. I staved off those feelings of stagnation by giving my free time to causes and organizations in which I believed.

Looking back since then, every job... [more]

I feed mine far less than a cup. She's on about a half a cup a day total per my vet, split between two feedings at 7am and 7pm. I have an autofeeder which measures and dispenses it for me, so I never have to concern myself with it (and she doesn't beg me for food anymore).

planning on getting a cat or two once I've settled in

I'm going to monkeybar away from your main question just to reinforce another learning-the-hard-way notion. Your cat(s) - which reasonably seem like a nice addition to a new bachelorette pad - could live until you're 45 or 50 years old. Think about whether you'll be settled (in this place or any other) long enough to accommodate them, because moving with cats can suck, especially... [more]
