MeFi post: just a fun loving (and surprisingly buff) nerd!!!
Huh. I've seen this exact ad posted in SF craigslist, so if you're posting this from Tulsa, I figured it might be spam. Yeah, he's in Atlanta, Austin, Seattle, and Philly, and probably other places but I got tired of typing.... [more]

I just don't know why.

Couple ideas:
1) To get people's email addresses with which one can spam with links (likely to a "webcam").
2) In the hopes enough people will comprehend its awesomeness and flag it as Best of Craigslist, and all the poster's dreams will thereby be fulfilled.
3) Some people who respond to craigslist personal ads are "vulnerable," and are therefore easy targets for just about... [more]

MeFi post: Is Day Care a luxury or a benefit?
A couple things this article doesn't mention:
Google's Kinderplex is currently housed in what used to be a public elementary school. The school district of Mountain View faced declining enrollment and budget issues a couple years ago, and closed the school and rented it to Google, at a pretty penny. Win-Win for everybody, they thought, but the public school kids who lived in that neighborhood were split up between 2 or 3 other schools, increasing the number of students at each of the... [more]

MeFi post: We've Replaced The Patient's Blood With PolyHeme. Let's See If They Notice.
scrump, thanks for posting this. I had heard that there was an associated risk of heart attacks, and now we know about the increased death rate. To be clear, it wasn't a manufacturer or sponsor who published this data. Scientists from the NIH (who have been involved with research on other blood substitutes) retrieved data from 16 different trials (which involved 5 different products, not just PolyHeme) and published it in JAMA. They couldn't get all the data because sponsor's wouldn't release... [more]

MeFi post: If you like a ukulele lady, a ukulele lady like-a you
What the heck does everybody have against ukuleles? Geez. Maybe if you don't like Teenage Youtubers, you'd like professional orchestras.

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain:
"Smells Like Teen Spirit"
"The Good, The Bad, The Ugly"
"Shaft"
"Ruby" with the Kaiser Chiefs

The Ukulele Orchestra of Wellington (featuring one guy from Flight of the Conchords)... [more]

Clara Rockmore's performances are hauntingly beautiful. I've heard of theremins, but never actually saw one being played in that way, that was cool.

BrotherCaine and rkent, your videos feature the same guy. Clearly he's gotten a LOT better over the past year.

MeFi post: He "lives life in a way that most people cannot imagine."
I have seen The Nautilus parked on El Camino Real in both Sunnyvale and Mountain View. I may have read some literature by this guy at some point, and I was under the impression that he was in some sort of custody battle:

1992: Successfully completed the mathematical and conceptual work needed to preserve the idea, and began to develop software to present the idea as an "electronic book". Business failure (contract software development). Bankruptcy.... [more]

MeFi post: The Twilight Years
I took a medical anthropology class last semester (continuing ed, so it was all adults), and we discussed this very subject. It is a huge insult to not take care of your parents in India. One classmate, who was born in India, said that it is one's major life duty to get married, have children, and raise them to take care of you in your old age. And, in truth, many elders are actually live-in babysitters of their grandchildren or other youth living in the house. In the poorer neighborhoods,... [more]

MeFi post: A New Look for Archie
The Archie comics were very different from the "Betty and Veronica" comics. I used to read Betty and Veronica when I was a kid, the main reason being that each issue had paper dolls of the girls with new outfits. Apparently they stopped that in the mid-90s, which is really sad. I never really liked the Archie comics, because Archie was boring as hell. The girls lived exciting lives, though. It seems like Betty and Veronica have always kept up with fashion trends, but Archie's stuck... [more]

MeFi post: Ortho-Evra Kills
This article says, and the company's website confirms, that Agile Therapeutics is currently testing a lower-dose estrogen birth control patch. If anybody knows how to become a subject on the clinical trials, please let me know.

One thing that we haven't covered here is the differences between the patch and the pill that may affect the dose. The oral pills have to travel through the digestive tract before they are sent out into the blood stream. So the pill has added... [more]

MeFi post: Skin
This makes me miss my home state of Maryland terribly. I've never been to Dorchester county except to drive through it on the way to Ocean City, although I have spent some time just across the Bay in Calvert County. Southern Maryland is one of those places, as stbalbach said, that's kind of like another country, but it's still awesome because we all share the usefulness and beauty of the Cheapeake Bay.

MeFi post: Coverage with Evidence Development
Blazecock Pileon: So we're clear, the HIPAA laws and the non-coercion regulations are two totally different things. HIPAA only covers access to and privacy of medical information. Nothing more. The idea of "coercion", on the other hand, is regulated in the Belmont Report, a document from which almost all human subject research ethics developed.

Specifically, the Belmont Report States, in the section on "Respect For Persons":

Mister_A wrote: You don't need Medicare or any other coverage to participate in the vast majority of clinical trials. The experimental medical treatment is provided free of charge, as is blood work, etc. In many cases, the trial sponsor will actually pay you to participate.

This isn't true in all cases. Usually, the only time a sponsor would pay a subject in a trial is if they are healthy. And usually, that's a phase I study with not a lot of... [more]

MeFi post: Disposophobia
I've always found this issue fascinating, that people are so attached to their stuff. Even if that stuff was bought off ebay many months ago and has sat around unopened since then. Not that I am immune to that (I have kept small pieces of cardboard and paper around for some possible future art project), but eventually I figured that if I hadn't used it in 6 months or a year, I didn't really need it and so got rid of it.

I clicked onto the Children of Hoarders and the... [more]

MeFi post: Ron Jeremy is nicknamed the Hedgehog
Although hedgehogs are illegal here in CA (as were ferrets until only recently), there are some people who smuggle them in and write about it on the internet. Also, one of the most famous internet hedgehogs was Spree, of Jennicam fame. More hedgehog pet pictures can be found here.

At the Snoopy Theme Park in the Mall of America, there is a petting zoo with a hedgehog, but I think they only bring him out on Wednesdays or something.

MeFi post: Relive Nerd Camp!
CTY was the only "summer camp" I can remember where I called my mom and cried that I wanted to go home. But it was also one of the only camps that had a public telephone. I only went to CTY for one year-- the next year I went to a camp sponsored by the regional church association. It was a Habitat for Humanity camp. And although I worked my ass off, I'd say I had a far better time sleeping on cots and replacing roofs then trying to fit in and be praised by the teachers at CTY.... [more]

MeFi post: mommy i am scared...
soyjoy, In addition to the possibility that Disney changed the stories that the preschoolers heard, I think there are 2 potential factors at work:
1) The kids are getting their stories mixed up, i.e. Pooh getting stuck in Rabbit's Hole + Pooh going up in the tree via balloon to get the honey=Pooh stuck in a hole in a tall tree.
2) The kids do not have the motor/drawing skills to accurately represent the scene they chose (duh, they're pre-schoolers), thereby making the... [more]

There is fee-based in-home wireless in Mountain View (SBC, Comcast, speakeasy, etc), and there are "hot spots" at certain places in town, however it is not currently being transmitted from every streetlight. This is what Google plans to do, and at "no cost" to the consumer.

When I was in college, Intel paid for free wireless across the entire campus, and I never heard a peep like this against it out of any of the students. But we were a nerdy school,... [more]
