MeTa post: USA Only
I'm in Japan, and all the hulu and NBC videos don't work. I've never been successful in getting a proxy to work on either of those site, either. Tips, anyone?

MeTa post: Too much tragedy for one thread
Have any of the posters in the original thread that have direct connections to Tech asked people not to talk about gun control? As a former Tech student and someone with a number of friends there, I'd like to say thank you to the righteous defenders of the emotionally traumatized, but a (possibly) inappropriate discussion of gun control is pretty low on the list of bad things happening today.

What about the question needs to fleshed out? Sometimes broadness is good. I, personally, would be interested in what difference in response (if any) there should be if it's a student or some crazy old dude or if it's at an elementary school or a college. As someone who spends time in a variety of different classrooms, I'd find more general answers more helpful.

And yet asking posters to please include information about WHY THEY CARE about a given question is still valuable to the long-term health of AskMe.

The guidelines read: "A good question should have a purpose, goal, or problem to be solved." The original question had some purpose, it was just unstated. If directly explaining "Why do you want to know?" is a requirement, maybe that should be made explicit in the rules.

It'd cover it for me, but then I read metatalk and am intimately familiar with the pitfalls of askme questions, despite having never asked one. Maybe it would have helped ol' four panels. Your adding those two words makes the rules regarding a reoccuring mistake clear and easy to reference. Seems like it could be useful.

posted to MetaTalk by Espy Gillespie at 9:34 AM on July 11, 2006
I think it's pretty clear that if docgonzo didn't want people to think it was Homolka he would have specified that it wasn't.

If anyone's curious, here are docgonzo's two posts in the Homolka thread from last year; one referring to the incompetence of investigators and the other speculating as to where Homolka would end up living: 1 2.

If it was me asking the question, I wouldn't have dignified the accusations with a response.

Then you'd continue getting answers that assumed you were looking for Homolka.

So fucking what?

Absolutely. I don't think the question should be deleted.

No one would be forced to give up anything. If the point of the project is framed from the outset as one of charity (as well as making a cool CD of course), artists will decide whether or not to contribute based on that.

Proceeds going to charity would not only make the project "good", but would probably increase sales, and thus get the artists involved wider distribution.

I really think people will be far, far more willing to take a chance on a comp of dubious quality when they know their money is going to a good cause.

There's nothing retroactive about it, as long as the artists know going into it that they're not getting a cut.
