Ask post: How Can I Help You?
Before you get in a cashier's line, check to see if their light is off. If it is, they are probably trying to take a bathroom break or it's the end of their shift and time for them to go home. The store I worked at required us to take customers if they got in our line, even though the light was off, which often led to the squirmy, have-to-pee dance after multiple customers kept getting in the closed line.

The exception to this is if a cashier with a light off waves... [more]

Ask post: Notepad? Honestly?
Okay, at the risk of outing myself as a total dork...

I too was looking for a similar solution, and got really frustrated that there weren't any free meal planning options out there, so I created my own.

It's an excel spreadsheet. This is what it does:

Allows you to plan two weeks worth of meals
Allows you to enter ingredients for the specific meals
Pulls the ingredients into a shopping list and... [more]

Ask post: What was your favorite course in college?
I loved my Religion 101 class, as well as my Pop Culture class (though the Pop Culture class was more challenging than I expected.) Neither of these was required or beneficial for my major, but I feel like they contributed to my becoming a more well-rounded, informed person (which absolutely should be part of your college experience.)

Religion was a surprise for me, as a rebellious Baptist, I didn't think I would want to have anything to do with it, but it was so... [more]

Thanks guys! Decided on a framed photo of the winning horse from his birth year (1958) and a nice bottle of Kentucky Bourbon. Awesome ideas!

Ask post: Acing an interview?
Pasting my response from a previous thread. (some of it won't help with tomorrow's interview, but still could be helpful in the future.)

I was a terrible interviewer straight out of college. I recommend going to as many throw-away interviews as possible, to get in some practice. The more I did this, the more comfortable I got in the interview environment, plus when I finally did get to an interview for a job I actually really wanted, my answers came naturally, because I... I have no idea about the pea soup, but this recipe for butternut squash soup is one of my all-time favorites. Every single person I have served this to has wanted the recipe.

Ask post: How does self-checkout work?
I used to work at a grocery store and often worked the self checkout. At our store, the customer would hit a button that said produce, which would make our screen flash, notifying us.

There were video cameras over each station's scale, and a monitor at our workstation showed the video from all of the stations. So once my screen started flashing, I could look at the monitor to see what kind of produce it was, and punch in the code.

Ask post: What is a good replacement for this discontinued nail polish?
My quest for awesome nail polished ended at OPI. If they ever discontinue, I'm in trouble, because I tried dozens of others and wasn't satisfied.

I love OPI nail polish. It is the highest quality I have found, and it lasts forever! Best of all, it dries quickly. It looks like they have a silver color in their holiday collection.

You'd probably have to go to a salon to buy it, but I think they have a list on their site of stores that sell it.... [more]

Ask post: Good Interview Book?
I was a terrible interviewer straight out of college. I recommend going to as many throw-away interviews as possible, to get in some practice. The more I did this, the more comfortable I got in the interview environment, plus when I finally did get to an interview for a job I actually really wanted, my answers came naturally, because I was so used to going through the routine.

I should mention that the 48 days book is written with Christian guidelines, but not overly so. It gives a lot of helpful advice while not bashing you over the head with preaching.

Ask post: How can I bring myself to actually study at school?
I was in my second year of college before I found my best study method. I often fell asleep or got bored when simply reading over texts or study guides.I had to make it a game so I could stay interested.

Usually I would make flash cards from the text or my notes. Get a pack of index cards. Write the question on one side, the answer on the other side. Write every question that could possibly be on the test.

Start at the top and go through... [more]

Ask post: Help us choose our new dog!
I do appreciate all of the comments, however, I was looking for a more specific answer regarding which breeds have temperments that would best co-exist with my dog--not whether I should adopt from a pound or buy from a breeder.

I realize this is a sensitive subject for animal lovers, and I am definitely considering adopting--I just didn't ask to be convinced to do so. My question was basically: which types of dogs are generally quiet, calm, and non-aggressive. Sorry... [more]

So you want a degree program that doesn't take a few years? I'm not sure that's remotely realistic.

Actually, I said several years, and by that I meant more than 4. 2-4 years is what I was expecting.

Tossing in my vote for preferred smell = clean. Shower regularly and if you must use a spray of some kind, find one that is light and smells like soap.

Probably not the route most would go, but this happened to my 70-year-old grandmother a couple of years ago, and she bashed the thing to death with a garbage can and desposed of it herself. Times like that make me wonder if we are even related, as I would have run screaming out of the house and never returned!

Ask post: What car should I buy?
I purchased a new Civic sedan in March, and I LOVE this car. It is much roomier than past Civics (my step-dad, 6'4" sits comfortably in it, while he had to hunch over in my beloved 93 hatchback.) I've been averaging 31mpg in city traffic.

The interior is very cool--of course, I was excited to have power anything, as the newest car I had before this was the aforementioned hatchback.

The digital speedometer is the first thing everyone... [more]

Also, several people at his work have been passing this "bug" around.

Well, I suppose I dodged that bullet. I drank a lot (a LOT) of water, and though at one point I did feel a little queasy, it most likely was all in my head (or due to all that water floating around, heh.)

I am going to look into the Airborne stuff for future reference, though. Thanks!

If you crave a bath for its relaxing qualities, try getting a shampoo or body wash with mint or lavender (or anything with a nice smell, really--Philosophy has some sweet ones) and use really hot water. Here's a link to Bath & Body Works' aromatherapy section. The steam will create a little aromatherapy box. That is what got me through three years of dorm community showers. :-)... [more]

We are going to have live musicians. I just wanted to listen to recordings to get an idea of what would sound good, and to kind of plan out what we would want.

Would I be better off finding my musicians first, and then asking them what they can play? I am not a musician, and I've never hired one before either, so I don't really know how to go about it. :-)

No punch recipes, here, just wanted to add my props to the bride for not wanting games. My familly thinks there is something wrong with me for hating shower games. I swear to god if I see one more toilet paper dress contest I will scream!

Ask post: Help me help my younger brother
Not to scare you, but your situation sounds almost identical to mine. A drug and/or alcohol problem may be to blame.

About a year ago, my normally outgoing and smart brother (19) dropped out of his first semester of college, and told us he was moving in with a friend and was going to work for a semester. He was very distant with family and did come around unless my parents begged him to come over. He was also always broke.

Ask post: What hot beverage can I drink apart from tea, coffee, hot chocolate and milk?
At our house, around Christmastime, we always make our own batch of "apple cider," which involves warming up a pot of apple juice on the stove, and pouring in a bag of red hots. It makes for a nice, spicy drink, although I guess it's not technically cider, if we're going by the above def. Good though! And easy!
