I'm playing republicans because the computer is better than me and it got depressing the other way around.

I'm ashamed to admit I beat the game with Palin and wallowed in the blood of the end boss, four armed george bush.

So, as a rabid foaming at the mouth liberal, I couldn't care much less if Palin was involved in an Alaskan succession group. Is this attack ad supposed to target her base? Won't they just write it off as an evil liberal lie?

MeFi post: Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.
What made that video completely awesome for me was the earnestness of it all. Absolutely no notion that McDonald's is un-food. Just a sincere and successful effort to put one over on the man in pursuit of a big mac. Fantastic.

MeFi post: Down Syndrome Testing
This thread is really a fine demonstration of the failure of the medium to serve some topics. Even with it being pared down to on-topic posts, the cross talk and outrage seems to remove the chance of reasonable dialogue.

I felt badly for her, then I remembered that she married a race car driver and got in the car with him. Informed consent makes it funny again.

Amazing. Thank you, and big thanks for that youtube channel link. I am embarrassingly ignorant.

MeFi post: God-like powers, at last
I like how the completely impossible levels are bracketed by trivial levels with no discernable rhyme or reason. That makes for a fun experience. I also like how my phd in physics was of no help.

MeFi post: Should This Feat With No Feet Be Defeated?
If he were breaking records by large margins this wouldn't be a debate, he'd be barred from competing. In light of that, I think the athletic community would be better off barring him up front. Big time sports are goofy.

MeFi post: 530 pounds, 240 kilograms, 38 stone.
Relatively rare for me, but I'm skipping reading this thread and tacking my comment on here at the end.

I was really surprised by how not-surprising all this was. Apparently my assumptions about hugely fat people were pretty much right on the money in her case. That's a little creepy.

MeFi post: US Eastern Seaboard the spillway for a "slow wave" of melting Greenland glaciar water
"The thermal expansion of water as a result of global warming is already causing waters to rise around the world."

This line really made me wish I had my old textbooks around still. Had no idea.

I hope my future work in physics is described as done by "a former Baskin Robbins ice cream scooper" since I did that in high school. (and this is cool math)

MeFi post: Mars Ain't The Kind Of Place To Raise Your Kids
I prefer space exploration to the military industrial complex if I've got to choose my Welfare For Geeks option. That said, I'd love to see all the smart creative people who get worked up about mars exploration get worked up about problems here on earth.

(Back when I was an astronomer I was shunned by my fellow astronomers for offering the opinion that maybe spreading birth control to the rest of humanity was a more worthwhile expenditure than launching people to mars.)

MeFi post: SquatRx
I'm a big fan of what he did with this series of videos. I ran accross them back on the crossfit.com forums and found the troubleshooting and breadth of advice very helpful for improving form. There are a few threads over there where he and others get into rather lengthy and in depth discussion of the back squat. I'll try to dig them up when I get home.

MeFi post: Confessions of an Army Torturer
I believe psych studies have shown it's an empirical fact that most people would do the same placed in those conditions, given those orders. We're all potential monsters just waiting to be programmed. The real problem lies in the source of the policy.

As I watched those (thank you for the post) I wondered if he picks up on slow changes. Like his wife aging. There was a part where he said he had no idea if his hair was grey (it was at that point) as he'd never seen it before. Seeing his wife as a middle aged woman, rather than the young woman from years ago, I wonder if this is jarring to him? Or is it the kind of detail that the brain (or love) glosses over?

MeFi post: How much is that Water Buffalo in the window?
I've been a fan of Heifer for a while now, my current charity of choice. Looking at the report linked to above by lyam I'm puzzled again. Did Heifer really turn nearly eight million dollars of profit last year? Is that even remotely normal?
posted to MetaFilter by Shutter at 1:46 PM on January 18, 2007
Oh, wait, I spoke to soon. That page was for the Heifer Foundation rather than Heifer International, the later seems to be the actual charity and scores a bit better. Then again, the actual charity seems to have made nearly 10 million dollars of profit last year. I remain confused.

MeFi post: People in Glass Cones Shouldn't Juggle
This reminded me of something I saw at least 15 years ago on public television. A man doing a sort of reverse juggling routine, he bounced balls off the ground and various surfaces. My favorite part was when he stood in a large equilateral triangle and had 4+ balls cruising around at once. Great rhythm. Don't suppose anyone know what that is eh?
