Yeah, whenever I was trying to look at my Mefi RSS feeds in FeedDemon, Avira wouldn't let me.

aww yay :D
I've got a history of cancer in my family - started with my dad 10 years ago, who survived Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (in remission, and he's generally fine, but he has to do a checkup every so often) and since then various relatives have either fought cancer off or surrendered to it. It's always hard, but I suppose it was harder for my dad's time because he was the first (at least in a long while) in our massive family tree, and I was so young I didn't quite get... [more]

OMG YES on the scholarship.
Don't make it too complicated though - something where the skill level distracts you from the content and enthusiasm. I had to make a video for my KP Aarhus app, and all I had was a piece of $2 black cloth and my boyfriend's old camera (not even a proper video cam). I lost out heavily to those who had access to better technology and could make their videos look better.

urgh, am I the only one who hates the new placement? If I have nothing personally to add, I read till the comment box and then stop. I completely missed the box a few times.
How about putting it NEXT to the comment box (since there's tons of space), or just above it?

Mefi Made Me See The Light!
I don't know if Mefi has actually changed my views on anything, but it has educated me a lot about all sorts of different things. I particularly learnt a lot from Miko during the GiveWell saga, and I remember the thread about Habitat for Humanity and the poster that worked there was very informative as well.

davey_darling: the college had quite reasonably asked for.
Go back and read the thread. The college is asking for documents that are confidential or otherwise hard to get. It is traumatizing.
She brought a friend along for confidence, not to main the guy.

Are some more worthy of respect than others?
I can see where konolia's coming from; I see this all the time with posts about Islam. The Charmin Burqa thread is a good example. For some reason, many Mefites equate Islam with "fundie Taliban burqa wearers", while my experience with Islam is so completely different. Islam also has a branding problem, but the differences are so vast across the world that all the misconceptions are way off-base - yet for some reason, Islam culture = Middle East culture.... [more]

paduasoy: LOL! It is indeed a lot. My lists serve as a "books I would like to read at some point" list - once I've read them (buying the book themselves, reading them in the library, being gifted them) I take them off the list. I only really keep books I've read in there if I've read them from somewhere else and liked them enough to want a copy for myself.
There's also games in there, which don't ship internationally unfortunately :(

I just got two free magazines from Left Turn. I don't recall ordering them, so I'm guessing they're from my Secret Quonsar.

caveat empress: What if you're not sure if you've received a Secret Quonsar present or not?
I did get an unexpected package (the magazines) so that could have been my Secret Quonsar gift; however, because there wasn't any other indication of whom it came from or what the occasion was, I have no idea.
If the magazines came from you, please speak up!

Translate ReadMe int CheckMeOutFromLibrary
Someone asked me about my massive Amazon wishlist and I replied saying that it's meant to be more of a "books I want to get at at some point" list which I normally use for the library. A tool to make that easier would be extremely useful.

Oh thank you. I sometimes notice the borderline racist stuff but refrain from saying anything because, as some mentioned, I don't want a pile-on. Sometimes even just a misuse of words gets me into a whole heap of trouble. This is great, thanks.

The discussion on fair use on that thread and in this one comes from an American perspective. AmbroseChapel is in Australia, where there is NO SUCH THING as "Fair Use". Most (if not all) things Americans consider "fair use" is illegal here.
