I've got a history of cancer in my family - started with my dad 10 years ago, who survived Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (in remission, and he's generally fine, but he has to do a checkup every so often) and since then various relatives have either fought cancer off or surrendered to it. OMG YES on the scholarship.

Don't make it too complicated though - something where the skill level distracts you from the content and enthusiasm. I had to make a video for my KP Aarhus app, and all I had was a piece of $2 black cloth and my boyfriend's old camera (not even a proper video cam). I lost out heavily to those who had access to better technology and could make their videos look better.

I don't know if Mefi has actually changed my views on anything, but it has educated me a lot about all sorts of different things. I particularly learnt a lot from Miko during the GiveWell saga, and I remember the thread about Habitat for Humanity and the poster that worked there was very informative as well.

I can see where konolia's coming from; I see this all the time with posts about Islam. The Charmin Burqa thread is a good example. For some reason, many Mefites equate Islam with "fundie Taliban burqa wearers", while my experience with Islam is so completely different. Islam also has a branding problem, but the differences are so vast across the world that all the misconceptions are way off-base - yet for some reason, Islam culture = Middle East culture.... [more]

paduasoy: LOL! It is indeed a lot. My lists serve as a "books I would like to read at some point" list - once I've read them (buying the book themselves, reading them in the library, being gifted them) I take them off the list. I only really keep books I've read in there if I've read them from somewhere else and liked them enough to want a copy for myself.

There's also games in there, which don't ship internationally unfortunately :(

The discussion on fair use on that thread and in this one comes from an American perspective. AmbroseChapel is in Australia, where there is NO SUCH THING as "Fair Use". Most (if not all) things Americans consider "fair use" is illegal here.
