MeFi post: Secret Military Patches
So this post had me going through a number of links, and I came across this gem of a post. It's from a UFO "researcher" trying desperately to find proof that a certain Airforce squadron had direct ties to aliens. Make sure you scroll to the results of his FOIA Q & A session.

"Q. Latin words "Gustatus Similis Pullus" are shown at the bottom of the insignia. Please translate to English?

Just imagine what wonderful fiction you could write if you teamed up with the folks from the Creation Museum.

This is one of the stranger illusions I've come across...

MeFi post: the examEAR
Even with multiple choice, you've got to either pre-record entire swaths of possible answers, or be able to whisper the entire question, and possible answers to a third party. The first sounds pretty time-consuming and not a good use of time, and the second still sounds pretty dangerous. It doesn't matter if you're whispering to a friend sitting next to you or 200 feet away, you're still cheating... still don't see any good use for one of these.

I'm not trying to be a stick in the mud, but someone please, PLEASE tell me why we need self-replicating machines on planet Earth.

Because of economies of scale. If you create 10 machines and tell them to replicate 10 times, after enough generations you have machines capable of creating something new (other than themselves) at a much lower overall cost.

People are especially interested in this for machines on the microscopic... [more]

[expletive deleted] : I grew up in the Chicagoland area, so our riding was restricted to turf in Southern Wisconsin on the weekends. I started out on a Specialized Hardtail, which was upgraded as money allowed.

The trails there are mostly up and down, short climbs, followed by short descents. They work hard to create technically challenging groomed trails to make up for the lack of elevation.

The fun part is that the up and down terrain offers... [more]

Again, agree with the rest of the people here. Unless the owner of this company was in on it, it seems to me at some point this prank will roll-uphill, to where he'll wonder what in the heck he pays you for.

Then again maybe its just that this consultant has been working 12 hour days for the last few weeks, and is bitter and dead inside.

You can still buy it at Wallgreens actually. I found it there, and bought some. I wouldn't say it was intense, at least not in the sense of a tobacco buzz.

Ok, One thing I need to point out before this thread closes, is that there's two kinds of snuff.

American Snuff: Wet, Tobacco Leaf. Suitable for chewing

European Snuff: Dry Powder. Meant for inhaling.

If you attempted to do one with the other, you would have a very bad day.

This looks like bullshit.

I wouldn't dismiss this project out of hand. Sure the examples may be somewhat contrived, but remember, this is a rapid prototyping lab, not a production house. Your asking for a consumer-ready product from something that was never designed to be.

If people were not feee to design things like this, we would never know whether or not they were useful.

Ok, here's the thing. He doesn't understand MySpace because he doesn't have a community of friends that already use it. Get it? It only becomes relevant when you can go on there and find everyone you grew up with, went to high school with, etc.

Thankfully, everyone I care to keep in contact with uses Facebook, and I don't have to deal with the recreational abortion that is MySpace, but I'm sure he could say the same thing about Facebook.

Whenever this comes up, I like to mention my friend. He just graduated and has been hanging out before starting work consulting in the financial services field.

He claimed over 100k last filing period, and due to his extended downtime, most recently claimed over 200k. He's ridiculous. He plays almost exclusively online. He even tried to teach a group of friends his method and was able to turn about 30% of the players into consistent winners.

Trojans that exploit a particular vulnerability have long been known to fix the hole after rooting a system. In fact, it's pretty much standard practice to fix the exploit on machines that are manually hacked to preserve root.

An official at the I.A.E.A., who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the announcements appeared to refer to an older cascade at the nuclear center at Natanz.

what's interesting is that this isn't a terribly new development, which means Ahmadinejad is probably using this for political purposes only, rather than announcing anything new.

Well that's just the thing. He's not particularly attracted to the coke dealing itself, and in fact, doesn't like certain aspects of it.

What he does like is the feeling of being "the man", the guy everyone goes to. This is why he could probably leverage his position into anything else when he decides to go, he just has to figure out what it is.

If I were him I would try and figure that out first, then start sliding into it. For... [more]
