I, too, wondered how many of these were set up and how many were just lucky shots. But cute, nonetheless.

From the second link:

"You be amazed how big the gap is between people who claim they will tip big and people who actually do."

This is so true. And when you are a girl serving drinks in a college bar full of drunken raging fratboys sometimes you *have* to be an asshole.

NaNo annoys me. Why not make a pledge to spend an hour every day (hell, you can even take weekends off) writing, and then another half-hour each day re-reading your stuff and cleaning it up. Seems like you'd get way more quantity and better quality that way.

My point is to make writing a routine, not an annual puke fountain. But it also doesn't do any good to produce reams and reams of work if you never go back and revisit that work to see what might be of value and what needs to be shelved.

Oh hell yes. I love Nardwaur. I went to see The Smugglers a few years back in Houston at a tiny record store and Thee Goblins /The Evaporators opened for them. Never heard of them before and they blew the socks off The Smugglers. Still once of my favorite CDs.

On the disc are hilarious interviews with Iggy Pop and Cretchien.

OH HAPPY DAY!

MeFi post: Thin times for the manorexic
What's interesting in this story is that his disorder seems to stem from weight loss issues — his stepfather calling him fat, being pudgy as a youth.

For many girls and women, anorexia and bulimia is less about weight loss and more about trying to stop the physical aspects of sexual maturation — breast development, hips, curves. That's why a lot of girls with easting disorders cite an early sexual assault as the trigger for their disease.

I missed this part:

And also being malnourished, you don't feel sexual, so you don't have to worry about being gay or straight.

Obviously there are different causes, I just know a few interviews I've read with girls who suffer from the disease claim that by starving themselves they hope to somehow escape the attention that begins when you grow from a girl to a woman. So, control over sexuality is a part of it, as you said.... [more]

Those clips Mach3 linked to are cringe-inducing, especially the first one. When the lady in the audience sits down you can see the look on her face as she realizes it's utter bullshit.

I think John Edward was a pretty non-controversial psychic. My mom used to watch his show religiously.

This is so wrong and vindictive. She has no idea if he even *knew* he had herpes, since many people who are infected are symptom free.

I sympathize with any women who has been screwed over by a man but that does give one carte blanche to continue doing the screwing. Besides, she consented to sex sans condom anyway.

But herpes ain't the end of the world, the social stigma is worse than the actual disease.

and...

How do you know you didn't get Herpes at some point and you've simply never had an outbreak, like, ever?

and...

But herpes is fairly common and fairly benign. That it's an STD and chronic makes it seem worse than it is.... [more]

First off, I'm pulling my hair out over her final post:
i've did what i set out to do

Secondly, not to defend this guy's behavior, but if I were a dude who didn't have the herp or didn't *know* I had the herp, and I had a one-night stand with some chick I barely knew who a week later was sending me an oddly-worded messages on MySpace of all venues accusing me of giving her and STD, I would go into crisis mode as well. I mean, I'd freak out,... [more]

Papa's Diary Project — in which the grandson posts excerpts from the 1924 diary of his grandfather, a 29-year-old garment worker and Ukrainian immigrant living in New York.

MeFi post: Ametrica!
Now that I've lived overseas I completely *heart* the metric system. It's so intuitive and user friendly. I know exactly how many meters are in a kilometer thanks to the etymology alone, but how many feet are in a mile? Gimme a sec while I google that.
posted to MetaFilter by Brittanie at 4:56 PM on October 17, 2007
What's weirdest is that the US only half-assly uses both systems. I was having this conversation just a few weekends ago with a Canadian stoner about how drugs in the US are sold by both ounces and grams.

And look at races. You can run a 5K, a 10K, or a marathon (26.2 miles). Why don't they call them a 3-miler, a 6-miler and a 26-miler?
posted to MetaFilter by Brittanie at 8:57 PM on October 17, 2007
Brittanie, the 5K and 10K races are pretty obviously international standardization for competitive/comparison purposes.

Right. My point is, so are kilograms, liters, Celsius, etc. So why would the US arbitrarily pick one specific thing to be measured metric while other things are measured Imperial.

I'm going to start a campaign to force everyone in the US to switch to military time.

Also, watching that Chubby Checker video just reminded me of my all-time favorite memory of my super straight-laced grandmother.

At my cousin's wedding they played oldies music during the reception, and I'll never forget her dragging my Pawpaw out on the dance floor when that song came on, and twisting all the way down to the floor and then back up again with him holding her hand. She was probably 60 or 61 at the time and it was the first time, ever, that I saw her let... [more]

Well, this post is older than dirt already but I have a few remarks:

1. I have never read anything of hers but I recently found and bought "The Golden Notebook" at a used bookstore in Seoul recently because it was discussed frequently and with high regard in another book I recently read and loved.
