Ask post: Best camera store on Manhattan?
BH Photo/Video.
I've only had dealings with them via the internet but I've found them fast, friendly, and priced below the competition.

Their website is here: and their address is 420 9th Ave, NY New York (taken off site).

Ask post: Do film cameras have any unique benefits?

Although they've been getting better, it's more difficult to be precise about capturing photos at the instant you want with a digital camera. There is a slight lag from the time you push the shutter button until the image is captured. Further, it's difficult to capture multiple images in rapid succession since it takes a moment for the camera to record each image before starting on another. Any delay in a film camera is in the winding mechanism, usually significantly

Ask post: iWant, but should iBuy?
The iPod touch is also part of the current education promotion (buy laptop, get free iPod) and that pretty much always means new iPods near the end of the promotion. When I bought my laptop last year it was a free 2nd generation nano - this year, it's the touch (promo page) so I'm leaning towards replacement in the shorter term.

I shoot concerts, usually, which are low to really low light, handheld, and involve moving performers, so I do have some experience with the sort of thing you're looking for. Here are some examples of my work: 1 2 3 4 5

as for your enumerated points:
1) This is doable, although a high-end point/shoot may be easier to work with.
2) awesome! there's a lot of fun ahead of you.
3 and 4) three ways to do that: crank... [more]

Ask post: What's the oldest version of Photoshop that works with Leopard?
if you're on an Intel Mac, then anything that's not CS3 will have to run via the Rosetta translation layer thing, which is a pretty sizable performance hit.

Other than that, I believe Leopard (or possibly Tiger) ditched Classic mode, so it would have to be OS X-native.

With that knowledge, paired with this handy chart of Photoshop releases, I think the oldest Photoshop Leopard will run is Photoshop 7, but a cursory google says that they don't get... [more]

Ask post: Egg white cost question?
the extra 1% can also be the difference between a fluffy meringue and a fallen batch of whipped egg whites - small amounts of fat interfere with the processes by which egg whites get all fluffy when beaten.
the margin of difference can be what makes or breaks any baked good requiring beaten egg whites for structure or leavening; angel food cakes, meringues, soufflés, and certain icings wouldn't work nearly as well with yolk involved.

I am a Canon shooter, and unfamiliar with the Sony/K-M system.

Photo.net has an overview and Dyxum.com delves pretty deeply into the system, listing lenses with reviews and hosting forums full of alpha-mount users. Here's a bang-for-buck discussion, which you may find useful.

I think you might want to spend some time with the included lenses to figure out what focal lengths you shoot at most often before spending more money on lenses that you... [more]

Unfortunately, this does not seem to be possible, if you go with the A200. There seems to be no Sony/Minolta equivalent to the famous cheap plastic Canon 50mm f/1.8.

There's a Sigma 28mm f/1.8 that'll get you a nice "normal" field of view when used on a small-sensor consumer DSLR like the A200, but it's $US259 even from the cheap stores. Sony themselves offer a 50mm and a 35mm f/1.4, which are I'm sure very nice but which are also $US325 and $US1350,

damnit I should preread better:

1) Canon's 50mm f/1.8 is the "plastic fantastic" or "nifty fifty" - it's the cheapest lens but has great image quality.

2) The camera body is where you'll spend the least money. My phrasing made that ambiguous.

Ask post: Can I take my SLR camera to the V Festival?
having been on the organizing end of festival shows, I can tell you that the security will almost certainly forbid the SLRs no matter what the site says. Typically they'll look at the size, and also ask if the lens is removable, and if so you're not allowed in.

Call the organizers to double-check, they might have some spare press passes or be willing to let you in for going the extra mile.

it occurs to me that "really good" doesn't mean a whole lot.

In my experience, Siteground customer service is super responsive no matter the time of day, keeps you informed about the progress of any requests as they move through the system, and has never taken more than 24 hours from first question to issue resolution.

yet another vote for Ad-Aware, Spybot, and AVG Antivirus.

Those three will help if something gets on your system, but this is certainly a case where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure; keep on top of your updates, be vigilant about downloads, redirects, and phishing attempts, and if you're at all unsure, scan it first or don't run it at all.

my mother was a ridiculous user of the crock-pot; she adapted a lot of her favorite curries to crock-pot usage. It might be a little harder without a stove, but I'm pretty sure you could toast the spices and brown the onions/garlic/ginger in some oil in the toaster oven, before adding them to the stuff in the crock pot.
On a vegetarian note, I find freezing and defrosting fresh tofu to work really well in slower cooking; it changes the texture entirely to something chewier.

there's also the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM; it's crop-sensor only but reviews far better than the 28mm f/1.8 USM and from my limited experience (mounted on a friend's XTi) would be a better wide-angle choice than the 28.

I have the 50 f/1.4 and the 85 f/1.8, and on a crop camera, there's a fair bit of room between them, and you may find yourself using the 50 where you expected to use the 85; this is by no means a bad thing, as I've found the 85 great for getting in a... [more]

how mobile are you? The ODM's specification page lists weight at 5.4 kg with a depth of 54-60mm; that's roughly 12 pounds of laptop, before anything else gets strapped to your back.

I'd also stay way away from desktop quad-cores in a laptop form factor; they draw something like three times as much power as a mobile processor and produce substantially more heat. It also means there'll be very little battery life - combined with the above weight concerns, I don't see it... [more]
