MeTa post: How do I get a heads-up on new comments to an FPP I didn't post?
if you subscribe to the RSS feed of a thread (I do it all the time for my AskMe posts) then the new comments would show up as new items in your reader. It's pretty handy, in my experience.

MeTa post: Best MeFi conversations?
on meatcake: a friend of mine made two nine-inch round meatloaves, then used mashed potatoes as icing, down to piping it out of a star tube for decorations. I didn't have any (no beef for me) but it got raves from everyone who did - so much so that it is slated to become a Victoria Day tradition.

why yes, my truth is stranger than my fiction.

LobsterMitten: I think the best/worst name I've seen was that time I was in Portland and we saw Hung Far Low. Sadly it was a long weekend and they were closed so we didn't get to eat there. My PFO-originating friends tell me it's great when you feel like Americanized Chinese food.

I mis-parsed that as Ni Hao, Gai-Lan, and wondered why there would be a show about dark leafy (tasty) greens. I mean, I love me some gai-lan in oyster sauce... but as entertainment?

oh, also: Batman or Superman?

Batman with preparation rolls Superman, as seen in The Dark Knight Returns. Batman unprepared would certainly lose to Superman, but - as we find out in Hush - Batman has a kryptonite ring in his belt at all times and is able to take down Superman with only a short time to strategize and well outside his element (the fight occurs in Metropolis) and so we can safely assume that... out of curiousity, how are people finding online play?
I put my Wii in the DMZ on my router, and I can connect to WFC just fine (and use the Internet Channel) but can't get a game going that doesn't lag hugely.

MeTa post: Utter tripe!
An American would typically say "gone to college" or "gone to school". "Gone to university" sounds British to American ears.

Colleges and universities are very different institutions in Canada, as well. It makes for fun conversations with American relatives, who ask how college is treating me and are puzzled at my momentary scrutinizing (figuring out if they've got me confused for someone else again) before answering.

MeTa post: Of making many books
I stumbled upon the usability book mathowie wrote a chapter for, and found it pretty interesting. It's a little dated now, and for a book on usability I thought some of the (book) design choices were questionable but overall it was good.

MeTa post: I just added so many "acquaintances" and "met" to my contact list!
at the Vancouver meetup, which was in a hipster-y bar, myopicman and I definitely took to calling people "fedora cases", after the infamous AskMe/MeTa thread kerfuffle.

also, I almost made a sign for the meetup that would have said "NOT MATT HAUGHEY? YOU'RE IN THE RIGHT PLACE" but didn't have time after work.

jessamyn: the only repeats from that meetup were me and myopicman, who, in a series of strange coincidences, I had run into numerous times that week. I thought I had hallucinated earlier in the week (I hadn't) and it turns out we share a number of in-person acquaintances, including radiocontrolled, who works at the radio station where myopicman has a radio show (two floors above where I work on the student newspaper) and who only found out about the meetup because I ran into her at a beer garden... there's adjustment of white balance (badly, to be honest) and a little sharpening but not much otherwise.
