They were applying his own paradigms for learning
Wow, this is tragic. Logo wasn't the first encounter I had with a programming language - it was far more simple than the BASIC I'd been exposed to at that point. I could still see the value in it to introduce a lot of programming concepts and I certainly absorbed something while using it.
Get well and good luck, Mr. Papert. I hope you find your way back.

Yet another self-styled "Pick Up Artist". I remember reading about him on Metachat quite a while ago and someone just mentioned this link to me at a dinner party earlier this evening. Quite weird to see him pop up here on the blue.
He seems more like the kind of guy who propositions every woman he meets with the expectation that at least one out of the many he asks will relent. It also seems that he's trying to pimp his services as a pick up artist guru, so... [more]

High speed camerawork is always fun to watch, especially when it exposes weird phenomena which isn't apparent to the naked eye. In this case I didn't expect *that* much facial deformation, no matter how momentary it was. Makes me wish Ali/Foreman was captured using high-speed film.

martinX's bellbottoms, I'm not quite sure what you mean - you're linking to this post, which is exactly what I'm referring to in my comment.

Dollar for Dollar?
Way back in the 80's the Malaysian government decided to add indicator dots to the Ringgit notes in order to make them more accessible to blind people - one dot would indicate 10 ringgit, two dots would indicate twenty, three would be fifty, etc.
They just forgot to make the dots tactile.

Lesbians vs. Lesbians
There's similar outrage in Ecuador and Peru where the rainbow flag has traditionally been used to represent the native peoples of the Andes. They, too, are quite upset at the widespread association of the rainbow flag with the GLBT movement. I was eavesdropping on a local tour guide as he was giving his spiel in a museum down in Cusco when he became nearly apoplectic with rage explaning the significance of the rainbow flag and how it had been co-opted by "filthy types of questionable... citron - I think that the issue with MetaMan is not so much that he is a Clinton supporter, if that's what he is in actuality, but that he resorts to ad hominem, is dismissive of others' opinions, comes across as condescending, and argues poorly.
Not to mention that this is a thread about the media manufacturing nontroversies, and MetaMan's comments in here are pure derail and should be flagged as such. Sorry to contribute to the further derailing.

Countess Elena - the KKK wikipedia entry states that the Klan was active in resisting reconstruction by going after "carpetbaggers, scalawags, and freed slaves", but it suggests that it was violence perpetrated upon white northeners and those who were perceived to be representatives of Northern Oppression. I haven't really found anything which corroborates Ms. Ruth's statement that the Klan were more of a moral police force on the local community, though.... [more]

Weirdly enough, I was putting together an FPP about a closely related subject - homosexuality in Afghani/Kandahari society - a couple of months ago but lost it when my laptop fan went kablooie and I never got around to recreating it.

Best Story Ever
I don't know who Grant Lawrence is but his story is pretty darn fantastic. Heavy on the schadenfreude admittedly, but he also tells it really well. Not for germaphobes or people who have had unfortunate encounters with airplane toilets.
I have to say that it's not particularly surprising that it's the actors and showpeople who have to talk as part of their schtick who really come across the best - their pacing's good, they work the audience well, and it helps that the... [more]

Doohickie - terror doesn't require comprehension. And I think the objection to this stems from the fact that the cat is being subjected to this purely for the entertainment of its owner.

Bloggers in Parliament
Whoa - PKR and PAS together? Politics does make strange bedfellows.
The current situation is Mahathir's chickens coming home to roost (Anwar Ibrahim, specifically), and that's rather evident. It always puzzled me why Mahathir felt such enmity towards his former protege that he would go to such lengths as to frame him and attempt to remove him from the Malaysian political scene. Since Dr. M had been grooming Anwar as his replacement without any eye towards... [more]

For those interested in what the youtube video was all about, here's a rough translation:
Man at podium: Ladies and gentlemen, our country is so advanced now!
We have Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, the IT song...hey!
Hey you! What are you doing?
Blogger: Oh, I'm just updating my blog.
Man: What blog? You're destroying... [more]

Whoops! A mistranslation on my part - the text in the youtube video reads "People who are dense are afraid of shadows" - I got fooled by the false cognate. By the way languagehat, the accent of the man behind the podium is that of the the northern state Kedah, although it's not particularly strong here. The distinguishing feature is that the "r"s are pronounced in the back of the throat as opposed to in the front of the mouth.
BinGregory - it's... [more]

Hey! Fred Milton is still SO #1! Wow!
Late to the thread but I wanted to say that Cruddy is a fantastic read, regardless of whether you're a fan of Barry's comics. I think emjaybee's characterization of her ability to recreate the doodles and drawing style of an adolescent is remarkably on the nose, which is why there is such a disparity between those who relate to her work and those who don't. One Hundred Demons is also highly recommended. She is the #1 Groover!

Good show, escabeche! It's not often that I see science/tech writing which doesn't shy away from giving the reader some credit while at the same time giving enough technical background so that interested parties have good starting points to do further research. Bravo! And, quite frankly, I was rather surprised to see this published by Wired, of all places.
