Ask post: Can someone advise on whether this food will still be okay to eat?

I thought I'd better respond, lest people think I had indeed died.

a) I am not dead.
b) I threw the pasta out, so I can't say "ha ha, I ate it and I was fine, you silly naysayers"
c) In my defense for being such a wuss, it was my birthday the day after this post, and I did not want to spend it being sick

However, the next time something like this happens when I am drunk (the likelihood is high...), I... [more]

Ask post: My head hurts
Rather than giving my eyes - even sunglassed - anything to have to deal with, I often keep my eyes shut for as much as possible. Sometimes I even lie down and put a towel over my eyes so no light can get in at all.

Eyestrain, I find, is one of the most frequent causes of my headaches.

Also, have you been checked for allergies? I used to get migraines a lot when I was younger, and it turned out I was allergic to oranges/anything containing orange. I actually outgrew this, but it might be worth having some tests.

Ask post: How do I be an adult?
I am in a very similar situation to you right now. In a 7-person household, one is a genuinely nice, friendly guy... Except he annoys the living hell out of me.

It's different to you in that this "Joe" is just totally boring. He gets home every day from class and tells everyone, in detail, about everything that happened to him that day. Without us even ASKING. He talks all the way through movies when we all sit down to watch one. If he's seen the movie, he... [more]

Ha! That's amazing. I never ever would've found that myself. Thanks :)

loiseau, how will that keep them on at the back though? wont they just squish my foot up towards the top a bit more? :/

Yes but, I meant where's their REFINED sugar coming from, oaf...

Okay sorry, ignore the last paragraph. That was a sideline to the original question

"do I actually need the sugar... and whether you do need to up the dosage or if something like fruit can suffice instead (even though it never seems to have the same hit as, say, a bag of Skittles...)"

Ask post: Boring girlfriend problem
Surely what you "actually look for in a girl" is someone who you can laugh with, feel relaxed with, someone you're physically and emotionally attracted to, whom you can care about regardless of whether you're together or apart?

If you look for superficial features in a person, the only person you can blame for your resulting disappointment is yourself. The fact that you liked her accent (seriously, WTF??), family wealth, dress sense and how she gives you a... [more]

Ask post: Is chemistry really that important?
I agree with the 'break up now' suggestions. Not only are you only six months in and feeling a distinct lack of chemistry but you aren't certain there even was any, ever. I'm curious as to why it's even lasted this long if you've never felt "That into him" - what spurred you on to move from being just friends or just dating to being exclusive/in love/whatever if you never felt like it was amazing? I don't think I could ever get into anything with someone who didn't make me feel nuts... [more]

Ask post: How do I tell my wife she's fat?
When I was overweight a few years ago (though admittedly it wasn't health-damaging), three of my four female room-mates were forever 'suggesting' i get out and do exercise, or making comments about how they'd join a gym with me, or mentioning the diet i had, and just basically made me feel fat, the whole year. And though you'd think it would have the effect of me going about losing a ton of weight because it was on my mind all the time, it did the total opposite. I was unbelieveably unhappy, and... [more]

Ask post: What motivates a person to start an email chain letter?
Hahahahah i love chillmost's answer.
Anyway, i dont know if you live in the UK (or have lame friends) but this also occurs in mobile phone SMS text messages. I get them from close friends and think WTF? Thats so lame, do you even know me? What makes it even sadder than emails is, you have to pay to forward texts to people. Yet they still do it.
I cant imagine why people send emails except that they think it'll make you smile if they send a 'cute' one. Its a shame, because... [more]

Ask post: Any tips for getting rid of a lingering cold?
For an instant pick-up, i actually recommend drinking cold water. though it's horrible in the cold weather (makes me feel freezing) it wakes you up and makes you a little more clear-headed for a while. at least, it seems to have that effect with me. avoid hot drinks, they'll make you sleepier.

i know this isn't actually a cure; it's just sometimes it's nice to have a temporary hold-off. im finding at the moment that due to my cold, my eyes keep going blurry, particularly... [more]

Ask post: What to do in London?
I frequently (as a temporary Londoner who is always looking for fun/new/cheap things to try) use this website, because it's a list of the free things going on, today and for the rest of the week, in central London.

Some of it is really worth a look. Otherwise you could check out www.timeout.com/london which honestly is one of the best websites I've ever used. Extreme abundance of excitements.... [more]

Ask post: Should I be a celebrity impersonator?
np312's comment about dressing like a tramp is right, my dad has met Johnny Depp a couple of times, and said he really did just look like a homeless person. (albeit a beautiful one)

(er... my dad didn't say the part about being beautiful, i feel i should add. i was just assuming that part!)

Ask post: Where can I find books about historical events?
Edit: Just realised I had deleted where I'd earlier said "Salem Witch Trials and the Great Fire of London", but these are the main topics I'd like to find books about.

Koloko, because many a time I've shelled out precious STUDENT cash for a book that sounds good on the back, and even after a flick through, but proves to be disappointing. Thanks for that sarcasm though.

Ask post: spring back, fall forward?
I would've thought you meant 6. I think it's in the term 'pushed' (as in, further away).

Anyone who thinks 'pushed' means something earlier, sooner, closer, is.. well. Wrong. :/
posted to Ask Metafilter by angryjellybean at 6:31 AM on November 16, 2006
Surely also, 'pushing forward' is a kind of oxymoron?

Ask post: I'm not just in it for the money!
I'm an intern student working for a year at one of the biggest radio stations in the UK.
'Perks' for my job (and everyone else in the company) include meeting famous people, getting free concert/movie premiere tickets, working backstage at music festivals, and getting to write gig reviews.

Oh, and there's a constant supply of cookies and coffee. Possibly the best perk ever.

Ask post: Will he know that I'm a virgin?
You really honestly should tell him. Not for HIS peace of mind, but you will genuinely feel better if you do have sex.
Imagine how stressed and paranoid you'll be during the whole ordeal if you're worrying if he knows, or can tell!! Now imagine how much better it'll be if he knows, and is gentler, and reassuring, and you don't have to worry about anything.

Please tell him. You don't have to use the word 'virgin' because it's a pretty horrible, embarrassing... [more]

Ask post: What presents should people give to me for my own birthday?
They could all club together and pay for a trip somewhere. I don't know if you're British - in which case something like Paris could be great - or wherever, but maybe somewhere not hugely expensive but just for a few days, go somewhere new, go shopping, go to a bar, see a landmark you've never seen, something like that.

Or, as mentioned above, a hot air balloon ride is a great idea. I did it with my parents for my 21st birthday and it's something that a) you won't forget... [more]

Ask post: London?
I moved to London in July and am very happy renting between Russell Square and Kings Cross. It's central enough to be able to walk EVERYWHERE - 25 mins to oxford circus, 20 mins to camden, 45 mins to the river - but quiet enough to be a nice area and not feel like you're "right in the middle of a city". And I'm one of two single girls living in my flat, we've felt totally safe the whole time.
Just my input on the thread :)

Ask post: Always getting sick
That remark about anti-biotics from rudyfink was a very good point.. I was taking them for about a month up until 2 weeks ago and didn't think of that.

Also no, I don't get heaps of sleep. I'm the type of person who gets woken by noise quite early (7/8am) and can't get back to sleep, despite not necessarily having had the required amount.

I do agree there are lots of factors here! Thank you for all your suggestions

Uh... I don't know. However, the properties of the external hard drive indicates that it is FAT32.. and it's been working fine in my NTFS pc so far.

Unless, I don't know, the Mac changed it to FAT32 or something. On another note, I hate Macs. Burn them.

Do the people who suggested 'apple cider' mean alcoholic cider? O.o I might be wrong but 'cider' in the UK is alcohol. (And absolutely awful, I might add) Unless you just mean some fizzy apple drink like appletise?

Ask post: How to cope with a sick family member?
I know this sounds awful and irresponsible, but try being in denial.
My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in May, and she told me right before I was due to take 3 very important exams. And the only way I could get through them and pretend everything was okay was to act like there was nothing wrong with her. If she talked to me about her cancer or anything, I subtly changed the subject. I didn't ask questions or talk about it to anyone. I just pretended nothing was wrong and it was... [more]
