Whatever, jackasses. Some of these were gorgeous. Actually, I was asking myself whether they were actually composed. The absurd beauty is worth it.
And, yes, fenriq, everything we do is art; intentional or otherwise.
Grand post, Falconetti. Thanks.

You met John Cage? My god, that must have been fascinating. Please, man, relate the full story.

flapjax: WFMU is absolutely a site deserving of more attention. And I agree with your previous statement about the demystifying powers of mass-media. The CBC used to be great for that.

QuietDesperation: thank you.
That's a beautiful little anecdote. The dance must have been, as you said, riveting. I also envy that you've experienced Cunnigham's choreography firsthand.
Cage was such a sweet, wise man. I'm glad you had the chance. Makes me smile.

Is Wolfowitz on his way out?
Man, this is a smear. Politics aside, the behaviour of parts of the media and Wolfowitz's opponents in the World Bank has been deplorable.
probablysteve is absolutely right.

Pope Guilty: I don't think you follow me. Nor I, you. Preview is your friend.
Also, this thread is about a very specific situation, not the World Bank itself.

The Internets is Serious Business
Wow. Has no one noticed the moral hypocrisy involved in this farce? Honestly. This is still like napster in late 99 as far as politics goes. Progressive, my grade nine ass.

Greased Up Deaf Guy, we Barely Knew Thee.
Yeah, this is silly. The kid put himself in a position where that was probable. If he was a few years older, I doubt this would hit the international news.
Can't we just be done with the Tasers as horrible things debate? Yes, they have caused a few deaths.
As big a supporter of Amnesty International as I like to think myself, do they really have a better solution? People die in police actions, period. Guns, physical restraints, hell, force... [more]

Free Poetry MP3s that don't suck!
Y'know, it's always shocked me that Ubu has really been the only consistently accessible site giving access to these huge pieces of western cultural history. They've done a grand job, but:
Why is that?

So, an artist is protesting another form of art?
Not to be facetious, but, next year, will she hang only one overpriced, government funded painting in her living room?
Just have a thing against gov't funding for arts when poverty still exists. And wonder if she's been given grants. A tragedy of the commons, perhaps?
(and I duck from any upcoming onslaught)
That said, her artist statement sucks... [more]

oneirodynia, that's my exact point. The overconsumption of goods is, in fact, what supports art.
"The economic resources required to regularly purchase newly-manufactured clothing in retail stores are staggering – a hundred dollars for one new shirt?"
I suggest the economic resources required to support the artistic institution(s) are equally staggering. This project just seems hypocritical, silly, and slips at a cursory critical look.... [more]

Braxton's always held a special place for me. His (continuing) work with Richard Teitelbaum amazed me, especially pieces like "Crossing" and "Behemoth."
It's unforgivable how much his work has been ignored outside of select circles.

Uh, my question always was: "if the majors are giving it away, where exactly is this browser 'market' everyone seems so concerned about?" I mean, I recognise MS' inherent interest in controlling every piece of software we use, but where's anyone else's? What's in it for Mozilla, Opera, etc.?
Other than opensource ideology or niche marketing, that is.
Why not spend time on something that'll actually make them some money?

" You cannot name a Canadian prime minister who has done as many significant things as I did, because there are none"
Peter C. Newman is a spectacular fuckstick and always has been such.
That said, while my recent views on Mulroney have been softening a little in far retrospect, he stands as easily one of the most polarising and incompetent PMs in our history. The notion of Canada as a unified (or any other kind of) nation is sheerly ridiculous and the introduction into our vocabulary of "distinct society" is one of the worst elements anyone could've possibly introduced into... Has anyone forgotten that? And he did it while providing next to nothing in return.
The GST is an essential part of the Canadian tax system, though. There is no way our patronage ridden government (which cannot be blamed on one person or party, except in the continuance thereof), can do without the revenue that tax generates. The MST was no better; at least we get to see what we're paying now. Don't be angry with the tax; get pissed off at what we're spending the... [more]

Sorry, don't want to derail.
Just want to point out that as much as Mulroney was corrupt, stupid, and wasteful, this is a general point of Cdn politics.
We call ourselves socialist and libertarian, but come closer to pandering and bureaucratic.
This is hardly just Mulroney's fault.
And, yes, his son is seriously offensive.
