I continue to be flabbergasted at how many damn college students take badminton for credit. TONS AND TONS OF THEM.
Because required PE classes suck and badminton is generally the way to fill the requirement with the least possible effort. You don't need to change, you don't need to go off campus or somewhere far away, and even at MIT I was one of only two people in my class spastic enough to look uncoordinated while playing badminton.

I had a discussion pretty recently about how the best way to stop terrorist attacks on planes is on the planes themselves. I was thinking along the lines of heavy duty doors to the cockpits and special training for flight attendants. I suppose watching every passenger at all times and arresting the ones who can't sit still might work too.

I watched this movie at least once a week when I was little. I always loved the scene where Grover talked with the suit of armor. And all the scenes with Ernie and Bert. Actually, I loved the whole movie. Sesame Street used to be awesome.

umm didn't mean to post that right away/at all
Anyway, I think firing Jay Bennett has allowed Wilco to move past folk rock albums with weird noises and go back to just making good folk rock albums. See Sky Blue Sky, which I didn't like at first, but has certainly grown on me.

How I envy professors in other disciplines! How appealing seems the straightforwardness of their task! These are the properties of a cell membrane, kid. Memorize ’em, and be ready to spit ’em back at me. The biology teacher also enjoys the psychic ease of grading multiple-choice tests. Answers are right or wrong.

It's not really a hippie sport anymore. What's great though, is that even at a competitive level, the sort where people spend all year training and are in great shape and totally obsessed, there's still this huge culture of sportsmanship and fair play. Players are responsible for making the calls themselves and in my whole first season I only witnessed one call that either team got bitter about. Everyone is just way more concerned with having a good time than winning first prize and the way to... [more]

My computer science TEXTBOOK pointed readers to a wikipedia page for further information about something. Wikipedia is good for looking up a reference I didn't understand, or finding search terms but citing it in a book seems sketchy.
