Ask post: Why do I annoy people?
Generally speaking, annoying people are (a) in your face a LOT of the time, (b) DO NOT TAKE HINTS or listen to other people, and (c) don't go away easily or at all.

I very much second this. Is it possible that you might not be picking up on these hints, which can often be nonverbal? If you're conversing with someone and they're not making much eye contact, leaning away from you, arms folded, etc.? That sort of body language, combined with the person... [more]

Ask post: How can I cultivate ruddy cheeks?
Another girl who goes from cadaverous to completely red-faced at the drop of a hat (or at few drops of booze) here. Like zippy, I've noticed that when I use an exfoliating face wash, but the effect does not last very long.

On the subject of liquid blushes, I've been hearing a lot about Smashbox's O-Glow, a clear gel that is supposed to turn your cheeks a shade of pink to match your natural blush. The reviews I've seen have been pretty mixed, with some people getting a... [more]

Ask post: Are they really puffing in Mad Men?
A recent article in the New York Times brought this up:

The ashtrays are filled with the butts of different brands of cigarettes, some stained with varying shades of lipstick. But the actors smoke Ecstacy herbal cigarettes, tobacco- and nicotine-free. “You don’t want actors smoking real cigarettes,” Weiner said. “They get agitated and nervous. I’ve been on sets where people throw up, they’ve smoked so much.”

Ask post: How do I learn to use a Wacom tablet to make digital art?
A print resource that I've found to be useful is ImagineFX, a UK magazine. Most of their content is comes from professional concept artists and illustrators, and they always have some interesting tutorials, as well as a section in each issue where a panel of artists will answer reader questions. The downside? It's pretty pricey per issue, and subscriptions are expensive too. I usually pick up an issue every now and then from my local Barnes and Noble or Borders.

Ask post: help me make an indie rock bar a little more surreal
Definitely Paprika. I haven't had a chance to watch this one yet myself (and I'm a little annoyed that I missed it when it was in the theaters) but there's surreal images a plenty in the linked trailer.

Other animated examples I can think of: Spirited Away, for all the neat monster/creature designs and Gankutsuou. The latter is an anime adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo with a science fiction bent that replaces cel-shaded animation with bright textures and... [more]

How about Japanese/Chinese calligraphy? Low starting costs (a trip to the art store for a brush, some ink, and paper), and it's a very relaxing and rewarding art form. From there you could also branch out to Chinese-style watercolor painting too.

Ask post: New paralegal job = a million papercuts! How do I prevent them and/or heal more quickly?
My hands get very dry during the winter, sometimes to the point of bleeding, and I've found that lotions that contain shea butter tend to work the best at keeping my skin moisturized for long periods of time. Currently I'm using Bath and Body Works' signature hand cream*, which isn't too greasy and a small amount will go a long way for a long time.

Another thing you might want to try at home is switching your regular hand soap for something that promises to be more... [more]

Ask post: Manga for pre-teens/early teens?
I'm a little late to this, but I had a suggestion that they might enjoy:

-Kekkaishi. Supernatural comedy/action series about a couple of childhood friends charged with keeping a particular area of their neighborhood free of rampaging monsters. For the most part it's a fairly lighthearted series, well-written and mostly character driven. Overall, a fun and entertaining read.

Ask post: U.K. Christmas
In depends on the time period in some cases. When I was little my brother and I got Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds annuals, as well as the Bunty and Dandy ones. Basically in addition to the standards any kids program that was popular enough to have an annual got one. I'm not sure if that's the same case these days though. (For example: Bunty folded about five years ago. Dandy is still going though)

Searching "Christmas annuals" for ebay has produced some... [more]

Ask post: Toxic - not only Britney Spear's video/life
Don't don't don't be passive aggressive and just walk away hoping things will resolve that way. Scody is right when she calls it a chicken-shit move. I broke away from a former best friend like that some years ago, and still regret not having the guts to end the friendship properly. She was toxic to be around and towards the end I hated being in her presence. So I just stopped being around her, I cut all ties. So we ended with so many things unresolved, that still chew at me from time to time.... [more]

Ask post: Looking for Info on the Guilded Age
Thanks for the suggestions so far! I'll certainly head to the library this week so I can get a start on these over the Thanksgiving break.

Larry C, I guess I'm looking more towards books that deal more with the industrialization and the class experiences then anything else. The wacky sex and wacky science would be good to. As well as books or illustrations that give a visual feel for the time.

Two off the top of my head:
1. American Beauty
2. I'm not sure if this counts, but Bruce Willis' character in Sin City dies at the end of his story. He's one of the main characters of the three separate stories that make up the film

Ask post: shower gel??
I had no idea people felt so passionate about their choices in bathing habits.

That said, the only way to make use of showergel (if you are going to use it) is if you do get a loofah, but I suppose that a washcloth will do as well.

Big O! Show time!

Trivia: The show was canceled in Japan, but revived due to it's popularity with American fans, mostly due its strong showing on cartoon network.

It's a great show. I loved that the art style is so clearly influenced by Batman: The Animated Series.

There was an unspoken rule in my high school about not shitting in the girl's bathroom. The bathrooms were for peeing only, unless you were the only person there. I still follow this rule to some extent.

They're collectible, so people sell them on eBay, in bulk. (That links to the search results for "Kinder Egg")*

Holy crap. That link presents one of the biggest temptations I've ever seen in my life. After moving from the UK to the uS as a child, Kinder Eggs became a rarity to be savored when recieved. I still have a bag filled with about 20+ tiny toys.

So, yeah, seconding the Kinder Egg suggestion.... [more]

Ask post: movies that don't meet expectations
Superman -Reeve was great, but he couldn't make up for all the failings of that movie.

Any thing by Tim Burton, except for maybe The Nightmare Before Christmas. Visually, his films all look pretty, but they seriously lack depth in character or plot. Not that that is bad, I don't mind it when I'm in the mood for some fluff. But it gets old hearing my friends and roommate heap praise on him.

I also like Graden State, but I do think it was over-hyped.

Melinika , that is the best thing ever and I am totally using that as my costume this year.

How about a movie themed costume? Like Shaun (my original choice) leading around a zombified Ed on a chain? (kinda a spoiler, but eh.) Pretty easy to put together, it really just depends on how much effort you want to put into the zombie make up and finding an unmarked cricket bat for cheap.

Allow me to also vouch for Amelie for the umpteenth time. And the Princess Bride. And Roman Holiday.

I also recommend Sabrina (the original) and Beauty and the Beast, although that one may be a bit too Disney for the guys in the audience. The Kenneth Branagh version of Much Ado About Nothing and the Kevin Kline version of A Midsummer's Nights Dream are entertaining.
