Where to stay in Baltimore?
I grew up about a mile northwest of Pimlico, and I had a whole long ramble typed out, but instead I'll just say that I agree with ihadapony: Pimlico's not a good neighborhood and the metro's not great. Also, you're talking about Baltimore in August, which means it will be hot and humid and gross. Drive.
Neighborhoods do get better and safer as you head north of Pimlico, particularly when you're east of Reisterstown Road or Park Heights Avenue.

I have never stayed there (or been inside), but the Abacrombie Badger was on the list of hotels/.Bed & Breakfasts to recommend to parents when I was temping at the front desk at Maryland Institute College of Art. It's in Mt. Vernon and seems like it might be an interesting place. It also appears to be less expensive than the big-name hotels downtown.

Convince me not to get a Thinkpad!
Service: I have a Thinkpad R61 (different specs than what you're looking at, though). A few months ago it needed repair (it froze while I was trying to update the BIOS). The customer service person I spoke to spoke English perfectly and didn't give me a runaround at all. Turnaround time for getting the postpaid box and having the laptop back in my hands was a week or less (can't remember exactly, but it was fast--though, granted, it was a simple, defined problem that they were fixing.). I was... [more]

What should I wear or not wear?
You should not wear anything that's the wrong size. You should not wear a shawl just to make other people feel better. You should not wear a t-shirt over your bathing suit while swimming, because it's dangerous (it can balloon, fill up with water, and drag you down). Other than that, wear what you want. Enjoy and have fun.

Alternate drink to coffee/tea?
staggernation, there's always Pero and Cafix coffee replacers. Cafix specifically claims to be low-acid. Different ingredients (malted barley, chicory, and rye vs. Postum's wheat and molasses) but the OP might like 'em. I do, but I also like raw unseasoned tofu, so I'm not sure that counts.

Help me sleep.
I take calcium-magnesium supplements at night when I'm having trouble sleeping. Calcium has a mild sedative effect and Magnesium has a mild muscle relaxing effect. The combo helps me chill out enough to fall asleep. Not a magic bullet, but it can't hurt.

What are your favorite vegan ice cream recipes?
Better than coconut milk would be cream of coconut. It gives a really rich texture.
My mother makes pina colada sorbet using (canned) cream of coconut, canned pineapple chunks, rum, and enough orange juice to thin it to a good consistency. (Unfortunately I don't know the exact proportions, but I think it's pretty forgiving and depends on which flavors you like best.) She just buzzes it in a food processor, freezes it in a flat pan, and then breaks up the frozen... [more]

Mineral Oil - Uses? 'Banned in Europe'?
The closest to anything relevant I found is a claim that
Petrolatum is listed as a probable human carcinogen in the European Union's Dangerous Substances Directive (UNECE 2004), and its use in cosmetics will be banned by September 2004 with the following caveat:“The classification as a carcinogen need not apply if the full refining history is known and it can be shown that the substance from which it is produced is not a carcinogen.... Clip that URL a bit and you get links to things like, "Stem Cell Nutrition", which to me looks like parking a liver enzyme work up next to the phrase, "Plus, you're a Virgo with Mars ascendant."
Oh, that site itself seems to have little credibility, but it was the closest thing I could find to someone explaining what they meant when they claimed mineral oil is "banned in Europe."

Could this dog be Cujo?
Guys, presumably the estimated $1500 is for more than a tetanus shot, but also the rabies protocol...
A tetanus shot and some betadine or something similar for a dog bit ran me under $500 at a US emergency room with (effectively) no insurance.

Shuls in NY and DC
There isn't a big Orthodox community in Washington DC, so there aren't a lot of morning minyanim. Most Orthodox people in that area live in the suburbs--particularly in Silver Spring. There are some Mincha minyans (listed here under DC) for people who work in DC, but I don't know if that would work for you.

Online pharmacy for Canada?
Sorry to derail, but SassHat, are you referring to online pharmacies that provide the prescription as well as the meds (or meds sans prescription) or are you referring to online pharmacies that require customers to send in a written prescription?

Sometimes individual people react differently to individual breeds, so work with the hypoallergenic lists, but make sure to spend time with the breeds or specific mutt-y dogs you're considering.

Ears the problem...
I think you should call and tell the doc that the symptoms came back after you stopped the Allegra D and let her make the decision. The "D" in Allegra D is for pseudoephedrine (real Sudafed), which you can get over-the-counter, but IMHO it's not a good idea to take that stuff continuously. I have an ADD family member who was addicted to the stuff for years - it's related to speed/ritalin/etc.

Obviously this bears consultation with a lawyer or Someone Who Knows on your/their part, but I found an article which suggests that it may be possible to securely sign away parental responsibilities in Australia. Just pointing it out since much of what people have said upthread is US-focused.

Did your family sing together?
Born in 1983 to a mom born in the 40s. The songs I remember her singing to me are Daisy (but with slightly different words), John Henry, Molly Malone, Go Down Moses, The Farmer and the Dell, and Aba Daba Honeymoon. We also listened to tapes and records, but some occasions called for singing rather than recorded music.

I need help getting a contact lens prescription
I've had optometrists who use some sort of machine that can (mostly) determine your prescription by analyzing your eyes while you're watching a special animation sequence. Then they do a little of the "one or two" bit to fine-tune it. Comments here suggest it's called a autorefractor.

1) Do the roommates actually share a room, or just a suite, with your friend?
2) Does the dorm policy stipulate that roommates have veto power regarding overnight guests? My dorm did.

Burning the whole challah?
Random datapoint: I use this recipe and double the amount of sugar. I knead it by hand and I leave it in the oven until it's golden, not *brown.* I bake it on cookie sheets, not in loaf pans. It usually comes out moist and without a thick crust.

Whatever happens to the dogs, it's important to realize the neighbor's role in this. Even if the dogs get put down, you still have a stupid, dangerous human who trains/allows pit bulls to be violent running around. A new dog could be trained the same way as his current dogs were.

Why is no one suggesting crossover cable?
If you have an ethernet port on the PC (looks like a phone jack but slightly wider - it's how you'd connect to DSL or cable internet), you can probably network the Mac and the PC together using a crossover cable. Then you wouldn't have to open up the case, and crossover cables are cheaper than hard drive enclosures.
