Favicons not showing up
It's my understanding that IE8's handling of favicons is a known issue, and very low down on the list of things the IE team is working on at the moment. That's just a hazard of using a developer's preview (calling it a beta was really premature of them).
I see by your previous question that you ran IE7 when it was in beta too...might I suggest that if you want every feature of a program to work that you stick to released software instead. No snark intended...... [more]

XP Service Pack 3: should it be trusted?
I've installed SP3 on over 150 machines so far, comprising about 16 different hardware models.
The few issues I've seen so far are compatibility issues with certain programs that affect network connections: ZoneAlarm on a couple friends personal computers, the ZENworks agent on some our work machines, that sort of thing. There have been fixes available for every one of those issues.
The only case where I encountered a problem and just went with a... [more]

The books you would take to a deserted island
Oh god, seconding anything by Umberto Eco, Gene Wolfe and I'll add just anything by José Saramago (second question in a row I've gotten to throw his name in the ring).
After having recently reread a few titles, I've definitely gotten more out of the works of Ursula LeGuin than I did on my first reads.

Converting to Judaism, but secular / atheist?
there are a number of aspects of my life, my life experience, my approach to things that makes me feel like deep down inside I actually am a Jew
But you see, you're not. There are really only two ways to be a Jew, by birth or belief. Anything else is just play-acting.
And yes, many Jews would be insulted by this. And despite divabat's atheist friend having found a rabbi willing to help her, she will wind up no more jewish than you are.

non practicing Jews are really considered (at least to God) as being "heathans"
TeachTheDead, I'm presuming you're not Jewish? Because that's beyond untrue...it's actually quite the opposite of the reality of things. Heck, if a Jew converts to another religion, they are still considered Jewish according to everything we are taught.

You sure did. But somehow I doubt that Meatbomb, who I think we can all agree is looking for a more reformed Jewish experience than Messianic, is well served by those kinds of answers.

Explaining a unique and ubiquitous kind of stuttering on public radio?
On the rare occasions that I don't just pause while thinking of what to say next, I have a tendency to do this. In my defense, it's not an affectation; I'm just bothered by "um" almost as much as I'm bothered by "well, I was, like this...and he was, like that". I would much rather hear the NPR stutter (great name for it, by the way) on the radio than "uh, um".

Clyde, I'm not sure where I picked up the habit, as I don't know that I've ever been a big radio listener. Probably as a result of not driving. Do people actually listen to the radio at home?

Looks like I coined it, too.
That's how I'll be referring to it from now on as well. And upon reading some of the other replies, I have to admit I probably also do it when I have a point to make and want to finish it before being cut off, particularly when I'm talking with people who have a tendency to derail a conversation and go off on tangents.

When we got married in Sri Lanka, they had quite a few volunteer programs there to work with elephants. We didn't have the time or we probably would have spent a few days doing so (although we did get to ride one at the end of our ceremony). Googling sri lanka elephants volunteer will net you plenty of info to wade through though.

It's not sultry (and maybe more 40s than 30s) but Mocean Worker has always made me think of the days of big band and swing. You've probably heard some of his stuff before, as he's being featured in a lot of car commercials these days.

I want a creative resume
I'm a systems administrator. Many years ago, I created a resume that looked like a Windows dialog box. The title bar read Network Administration Properties and I had text, radio buttons and checkboxes indicating the various technologies I was familiar with at the time. Open plan offices: Do they suck?
The people at the levels that make the "open space" vs "offices" decision look at most two things: how many people can I fit for $x, and they weight that against potential turnover.
And may exempt themselves from that policy anyway.
I've noticed this at my workplace...the executives insisting that the staff will be more productive working in an open floor space are also often the ones who remain tucked in their individual offices.

Teachers- Tell me what it is like to have summers off.
My wife used to work summer school every summer, but a couple years back we decided she really wasn't making enough money doing so to make it worthwhile. Nowadays she spends most of the summer jaunting around the country visiting friends. However, she does have to take the occasional class, as New York State has an ongoing career development requirement in order to retain certification...something like 30 credit hours every 5 years. I'd imagine most places have some sort of requirement.

honkytonkgirl, you might also run into problems in terms of what places are classified as strip clubs. For example, when I was a much younger guy, I worked in the kitchen of a gentlemen's club in New Jersey. State law at the time was - and may still be for all I know - that the girls were actually not allowed to get naked in any place that served alcohol so they danced in the skimpiest bathing suits...
