How can I stop my hard cider from turning to vinegar?

I'd like to hang on to some hard cider though the winter — without it turning to vinegar.

Can my blog updates appear on facebook?

I'm looking for a facebook application that will update my profile each time I post on my blog, ideally with the first sentence or two of that post included in my profile.

Help ID this peach

Help me identify a peach! I work for an orchard. We planted what we were sold as doughnut peach trees but they're not bearing doughnut peaches; they're bearing mystery peaches.

For two summers I've worked for an heirloom fruit...

Fruit Slinger: Behind the scenes at the orchard and the farmers market For two summers I've worked for an heirloom fruit orchard, mostly at Chicago farmers markets, but also on the farm in Southwestern Michigan. Back when I was a market customer, I always asked myself what it would be like to work on the other side of the table. So last season I decided to keep a blog and tell the story. (The short answer: difficult but fun, with incredible quantities of free fruit.) In the run-up to the start of market season next week, I'm posting a selection of entries from last year. Next week, the markets start up and the blog will begin another season.

RIP / QEPD

The biggest tourist attraction in Buenos Aires is a cemetery. El Cementerio de la Recoleta is the final resting place for some of Argentina's most illustrious and wealthy residents. (Yes, Evita is among them.) AfterLife explores the architecture, motifs, and history of this cemetery, as well as the stories of its residents.

How are things? Sorry to hear you've been laid off.

I worked at a newspaper for five years. I quit three years ago. Now, about 25% of the staff is getting laid off, including some friends. I don't have a problem talking to those friends about any of this. But then there are other people I liked but haven't kept in touch with (at most, I've seen them at a few gatherings). What do I say to those former co-workers I liked who are now getting the ax? I figure they could use a kind word and a vote of confidence.

Portraits in the Wall Street Journal

Want to know the story behind those iconic drawings used by the Wall Street Journal for their mug shots? The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery has the scoop. (The site's layout is not the best, but it's worth digging around.) You can see how two artists render the same portrait of Yahoo's Jerry Yang. And read about how the first rendering of Gorbachev left out his signature birthmark. An artist named Kevin Sprouls started it all. Lately, Slate wonders if George Bush is looking a little frowny.

Making/canning preserves

I'm making raspberry preserves. I want to use half-pint jars instead of the pint jars the recipe specifies. However, I'm a little paranoid.

Dulce de leche with brownie chunks? Or maybe...

Ice cream that will blow your mind Dulce de leche with brownie chunks? Or maybe chocolate with figs and walnuts. No? How about kumquats in whiskey or pears in Burgundy? You could dedicate an entire trip to Buenos Aires to tasting ice cream and still only scratch the surface. This article in the Los Angeles Times Travel section has a run-down of the ice cream shops and flavors not to be missed. (Note: this is the mysterious ice cream project referenced in this Metatalk post.)

Hair today

Bald? A swift blow to the head might solve that problem. If nothing else, it will give you something else to worry about for a while. Note: procedure tested on mice; results in humans may vary. Possible side effects include gaping head wounds. via Slate

Celebrating gnocchi in Buenos Aires The 29th of every month in Argentina is special. It's gnocchi day. You know, gnocchi -- those heavenly little dumplings that often fall under the "pasta" heading of the menu. This Washington Post Travel section piece takes a quick look at the custom of los ñoquis del 29 and offers tips on where to get your gnocchi fix in Buenos Aires.

Holy Week in Spain

Spain's El Mundo newspaper has an online photo gallery of beautiful, haunting images from Holy Week celebrations around Spain. (More) 20 minutos also has a great gallery. Even for nonbelievers, the spectacle is impressive. Wikipedia explains a little about the traditions, and addresses the sartorial similarities between the procession participants and Klan members.

I want to write once, get paid twice

I have written a couple of travel/food articles for large U.S. newspapers. Once they are published, I am free to resell them. The questions: Where? How?

Has anyone WWOOFed? I'm thinking seriously about volunteering on an organic farm through WWOOF and would like to hear experiences and prepare myself.

Buenos Aires meetup? I have a project that involves eating a lot of ice cream and I could use some help. It would be great to combine ice cream and a meetup. Before the end of the month would be great. Possibly next weekend, 26 or 27 January?
