MeFi post: What Book Got You Hooked?
The Tawny Scrawny Lion was my first love.

I don't care what that naysayer upthread said, I love threads like this. One of the reasons I love Metafilter so much is because I get to read the opinions of so many other people.

Wow, that is amazing. Thanks for posting this. (And for bringing my attention to the fact that Nickyskye is back!)

MeFi post: Randy Pausch dies at 47
I have been following his health blog, but hadn't checked it in a few days. I knew he was growing weaker, but he was so upbeat, it was hard to imagine how close he was to dying. May I face my demise with as much grace. All my spare good vibes are beaming towards his family right now.

MeFi post: Old dangerous playground equipment.
I have a faded scar (as do my brethren) from every major piece of playground equipment available to us in the late 70's, early 80's. Cracked my knee on the metal stairs of the slide on my haste to get up and over as fast as I could. I still bear the scar. Cracked my forehead trying with all my might to beat my friend Maria's record of "monkey swirls" (the budding gymnasts in us wanted so badly to believe the monkey bars were really the uneven bars at the Olympics) on the bars, when I... I want to know what the practice session was like the first time the pair in the last video tried that trick. Absolutely amazing.

MeFi post: George Carlin Dead at 71
I am not very familiar with Carlin's work, but one thing he said really stuck with me. I'll paraphrase: "I am a pragmatist, when people ask me if the glass is half full or half empty, I reply by telling them the glass is twice as large as it needs to be."
I heard that as a little kid, and that shit still cracks me up. It is how I respond when people ask me that very silly little question. I always cite him, though. I can't take credit for that gem myself.

MeFi post: High Water Everywhere
RIP Lake Delton. Out of my hazy childhood memories, I recall the duck tour (and the jumping dog!). The duck driver/m.c. had us all look out the back of the duck boat at one point and fix our gaze on some distant object. After we all obediently did so, the driver said, "Great! now you can all tell your friends that you have had a look out of a duck's ass!" Everyone tittered, but my sister and I were shocked, just shocked that an adult could use a swear word so casually, and no one got... [more]

Okay, maybe it's just me, but this curiosity occurred to me: what about when the women were menstruating? Same deal?

MeFi post: Anubis, drink your heart out.
That is a deeply weird ad campaign. I can't help but imagine the brainstorming session that came up with something so incredibly bizarre. It's not shocking, but deeply unsettling. And it's for Orangina, of all things.

MeFi post: The Open Source Boob Project
I have favorited all of the comments that made me laugh out loud. The phrase 'cockpunching', employed so skillfully by longbaugh above made tears run down my face. The internet represents both the worst and the best of humanity. Kudos to all of you for making my damn day.

MeFi post: Abortion as Art
I am going to nth the other people calling bullshit. Maybe I am too cynical, but this seems like a particularly sick April Fool's joke that she couldn't play on time. This can't be real.

MeFi post: Please Hammer, don't hurt 'em
I'll nth the claim that what makes this video so super-special is the fact that mom never once blinks or cracks. I bet she has seen him practice that routine thousands of times. Why do I love you so, Chinese Hammer-Man? It's because your mom is so great to have raised a boy like you!

MeFi post: Dith Pran, RIP
I like what he said about how Cambodians feel like their body is just a home that they inhabit for a short period of time. When the house gets termites, it's time to move. What a guy. Classy to the very end.

Okay, just read the second article that Micayetoca posted from Semana.com, and how funny that the whole thing got started when Juanes was in the States! There's some irony in there somewhere, I just haven't found it yet...

MeFi post: Baltimore Cop V.S. the Skateboarder: Farva Looses his Cool
Hmmmm... You know, I suspect that videos such as these will only continue to increase in number. We have been struggling to set down guidelines with our kid about what is cool and what is not cool to film. Then, once something has been filmed, what is cool to post on the web for others to see? I had not foreseen a circumstance such as this, wherein a surreptitiously placed cell phone camera can lead to the routing of an obviously unstable police officer. I guess I am going to have to put that on... [more]

MeFi post: Which Solid Gold Dancer are you?
I am disturbed by the fact that I still LOVE their hair as much as I did when I was a little kid. The girl? With that pony-tail to the left side? It's all long and shiny? The way she whips that around so dramatically when she dances? Oooooooh! I totally wanted to be a Solid Gold Dancer. Still do. Their life is the stuff of dreams. This is the best post I have seen in a long time, and honestly? It's made what has been a tremendously sucky week into a wonderful one. Many thanks.

MeFi post: Benazir Bhutto Assasinated
Well, CNN is now conceding the possibility that "Musharraf is responsible", based upon that Mark Siegal email. About damn time they got around to the theory of Musharraf culpability (or complicity) in her assassination. I hate Wolf Blitzer, but I can't turn it off!

MeFi post: When you care enough to send the very bewildering.
Late to the game, but, oh Christ, how I would have LOVED to do this. Because my friends are so far-flung and international in nature, it would have ONLY worked if I had someone sending cards from somewhere in rural Poland (mebbe back-country Nicaragua). Loved the idea. I woulda done it in a minute. Definitely an idea for an unusual Christmas gift for next year. I will be watching Ebay in November fo' sho'.

MeFi post: These forum members are more dedicated than us
Why can't Metafilter be more like English Russia? They seem much cooler than we are. They do stuff. We just insult one another in increasingly clever ways, flame out, then drink too much at meetups. Why can't we have challenges? Staged photography? Maybe treasure hunts? Ooh! Ooh! Pickup basketball? Costume contests?

MeFi post: Thirteen Days of Christmas
How funny to see this posted. Just last week, while walking on UNC's campus, we came across our own local, previously unknown, a cappella group, the Achordants. They performed that exact same version of "The 12 days of Christmas", and "Africa", to boot. I know it seems really strange, but the arrangement was really quite lovely. Didn't hurt that it was a beautiful day, and they were playing in front of the Old Well at sunset.

MeFi post: Put The Post In The Basket
Gummo was the movie that I felt got left off that list. But a movie I saw most recently that freaked the bejeezus outta me was Tideland. The scene when the taxidermist lady tells the little girl to throw something valuable into her dead daddy's body before she sews him up is simply ghastly. Had a hard time shaking that one out of my head.

MeFi post: What was your first concert?
I am so amazed that no one has yet said the Grateful Dead! My first concert (with parental supervision) was the ever-fabulous George Michael (maybe playing with INXS? don't remember). But my first REAL concert was when I was sixteen, and my boyfriend and I went to a Grateful Dead concert, and had a classic 'dead' experience: we bought bunk acid off some fried old hippies, then spent the next three hours going, "Do you feel anything? I think I feel something!"

MeFi post: Ben Stein's Expelled
I had assumed that of late, Ben Stein fell into that Lou Dobbs type populism category (at least in my head), providing his mildly avuncular opinions on my beloved Sunday Morning. I have always found him amusing (he was in one of the Very Best Movies of All time), how couldn't I? There has never been anything even the slightest bit threatening about him, nothing that would appear to suggest real awfulness (despite his conservatism, which I never did quite grasp) until now. WTF, Ben Stein? I... [more]
