Garage circuit breaker problems.
It's probably 10 years old. It looked like a solid bundle of cables, Gungho, but again, I'm not an expert.
It's been mostly dry, jon1270...
Yeah, I'll leave the breaker off. And no, nothing else was added and as far as I can tell, the garage is the only thing on the circuit.

It's not touching concrete...
It's the switch that ends up in the middle... it's in our main breaker box.

help my sister live off her lens.
If there are any indie or chain weekly newspapers, contact the photo editor and see if they need any freelance help. Even shooting plates of food for reviews for 40-60 bucks an assignment will help her get her foot in the door.

How did you play sports in your neighborhood?
If you didn't have enough people for your whiffle ball/fat bat baseball game, instead of throwing the ball to a first baseman, if you threw the ball in between the runner and the base, they were out.

Small town; need small talk.
Is there a local paper? Talking about news is good. Might want to avoid the controversial stuff until you get to know people.

Not-so-special effect
Remember when the they are readying the Death Star to destroy Alderaan? One guy pulls a lever? (Here's a big example) It was a TV switcher and the lever is for doing manual dissolves/wipes/etc.
To get both of those images you can just start pulling the lever and leave it where it looks best... then you can proceed to end the dissolve either direction.

See the video, not!
No, not unless you have special reason to -- and sometimes there is. But for the most part, losing part of the image to an overlay outweighs having a poorly composed shot if no overlay ends up being used. Plus, you might use that footage for something later, and you want it to be the best composed you can make it, and that assumes there won't be a lower-third graphic.

A new bag (of tricks)
"Crawl" is a fun one (teach by having the dog in a lying down on the floor position and have them come, but have one person hold their belly down on the ground).

is a 1080p projector worth it right now?
We have an Optoma HD70, which is 720p. It's hooked up to an HD-DVD player (yes, yes I know). It looks fantastic. We thought it looked great just hooked up to a regular DVD player, too (close-ups looked a lot better than wide shots, though).
We have it projected to be about 110". The resolution at 720p looks great. Better than some movie theater digital projectors I've seen.

HD DVD errors...
Sexymofo: do you have the same problem with the audio track going silent after a glitch? (If you pause it or rewind/fast forward it will usually come back)

For the record I did try the upgrade (to 2.0) but doesn't look like it helps for this particular disk (Bourne Ultimatum).

Letterman and SNL in New York
We applied for Letterman tix online a few months ahead of time. They took a while to get back to us, and I thought we were too late submitting our dates. They'll call you and you have to answer a really easy trivia question about the show and you are in.

No, sorry, we've all been talking about you still. Wait another six months or so and you should be in the clear.

I second the baking soda trick... we had to de-smoke a mattress once that way. Took several tries, but it worked pretty well.

Powerbook vs. Macbook
Recently I upgraded from a 1.25 15" Powerbook with one gig of RAM to a Macbook. The speed increase was really great, but the 13" screen is a hindrance. I have it plugged into a 19" monitor at my desk, but otherwise it's really hard to be as productive on a tiny screen. Yeah, you get used to it, and the portability is a little better, but overall the Pro line has a lot of little advantages that add up.
Ride out the "gadget upgrade bug" ... it... [more]

How do I turn my computer into a TV and is it a good idea?
Elgato makes a few different TV Tuners for the Mac. We have an EyeTV Hybrid and it's awesome (we don't have cable, though, just over-the-air -- but the over-the-air HD looks great). The recording capabilities work like a charm.
Plus, having a small TV will give you an excuse to get out of your room.

How do you say "quiet please!!" in dog?
It's never too late to crate train. He might complain at first but don't give him any attention. If you can, don't let him out until he quiets down. The dog will be fine. The first time you try it, take them on an hour+ walk and wear him out.

Daytime Courtroom Television: What Gives?
Based on what has been said above, this is probably not true for all of the shows, or maybe even most. But is is true for at least one.
True or not, that seems like way more work than finding real people.

"I sent it!" "I never got it." Emailing assignments?
Thanks. I'll look into how easy it is to comment in PDF, have never tried before. Getting everyone on the same page for handing it in PDF might be tricky though.
I think a dedicated email account for assignments is a good idea, with auto-reply. Unfortunately gmail (my personal choice) will only send one auto-reply (vacation reply) per four days.
The key will be setting clear guidelines and sticking to them. Email at your own risk...

Interesting things to do in Des Moines
What Kudos said.
The farmer's market is pretty awesome. Good food, live music. Seven till noon tomorrow.
If you want art there's the art center.
If you're a kid at heart the Science Center is a great stop after the farmer's market.
If you drive around randomly in the residential neighborhoods or suburbs (I'd suggest Urbandale, Clive, West Des Moines) you'll see signs for garage sales (or you... [more]
