MeTa post: Bay Area Meetup?
I think you mean north, potch. East of Sunnyvale is Milpitas.

Anyway, welcome to the Bay Area!

OK, you win, fishfucker.

I love the State Fair. I am totally planning to go. I wish I lived a little closer, actually, you can get a season box at the racetrack for something like 650 bucks for 6 people, including admission to the fair. There's glory for you!

Tomorrow night is out for me, as I'll be going to the Crucible Fire Arts Festival, after spending the day in the City strolling the Mechanicrawl. Big Steam! Torpedo Submarine! Fresnel Lens! Should be cool.

we got our picture taken with the winning horse.

That's pretty cool.
The closest I ever got to State Fair racehorses was seeing them exercised in the morning. I was competing in the horse show, and lived for four days in a nearly empty WWII era quonset hut on the grounds right next to the racetrack. The racehorses were also stabled near our horse, so I would get to see those amazing long-legged creatures tripping daintily back to their stalls after being rubbed down.

MeTa post: "Wow, look at the Boobies!"
the comments of the guys who loved the site and were noting with glee their success at judging women's anatomies

I just reread the thread and saw only one or two comments that might be construed as such. Did a whole bunch get deleted?

I see "boyzone" as being a less mean-spirited and more unconscious thing than out-and-out sexism and so if I have used that term, that's what I have meant. It's when a group of guys get together and start acting and talking like some young guys might when there are no women present. First it's a simple little exercise in lighting farts, then the girlie mags get broken out and suddenly it's a circle jerk. And I am like, oops, this is not my beautiful house, where's the exit?... Hmm. If you had asked me if I had ever seen Wedding Crashers I would have said no, but now I remember being annoyed at the exact bit that Ambrosia Voyeur brings up. Thank heavens for that, otherwise I might have been unknowingly roped into seeing it again.

MeTa post: I c*nt stop saying twat.
Would any of the people who are "edgy" or casual about using cunt and twat use them if the discussion had taken place in real life and jessamyn, ThePinkSuperhero and other female members of mefi that you liked/wanted to like you were present?

Well, kind of the point of this conversation is there are different uses among different cultures. If one's culture didn't find the use of the word cunt to be particularly... [more]

BTW, I don't care if or how people use the word(s). What they're actually getting at is pretty obvious from their general tone, and I'm perfectly fine with people outing themselves as Scottish, or jerky, or feminist, or whatever. I just modulate how and if I respond to them. It's much better for my state of mind than to get automatically ruffled every time the word cunt shows up.

I'm with orange swan- EatMe would be awesome. A garden subsite, not so much. I make my living as a gardener, I'm a horticulture student, and I would never visit because gardening arguments are teh suck. Too much voodoo in the gardening world. Science just can't compete.

PS: Potato leafed tomatoes for the foggy Bay Area are where it's at. Less surface area to host pathogens. Baia Nicchia is a local breeder of toamtoes that will ripen and taste good in San Francisco.... [more]

MeTa post: Ugh, all RIGHT, mom, I get it.
Why does it bother you so much that people are weighing in to agree? It just means the best answer is apparently a really good answer, since so many people support it. I don't see a problem with people spending time typing if they feel like it, and I'm not sure how it hurts you.

OK, I can see why you'd be irritated by some of the less thoughtful answers, but... whatever. If people want to out themselves as less thoughtful, that's sort of their own problem. It's much worse when they are not only less thoughtful, but utterly incorrect.

Well, I like the tag cloud, because it's somewhat interesting to see which tags of the 150 are the most popular and it's a breezy and totally functional layout; but I have not and probably will not ever use this page.

MeTa post: Stinking of gin...
I don't think that too many people disagree on what school SHOULD be; it's how you handle it when school is not what it should be that is the real issue. I think there are infinite answers to this question, but I tend to believe that people who are passive about crappy classes are doing themselves no favors. I think it's naive to think that every class is going to wash over one with an invigorating wave of enlightenment, without doing any work one's self.... [more]

MeTa post: Clinton Obama Filter redux
Maybe most of you all are fucking sick of her, but you're not in the majority.

I'm pretty sick of her, but I don't want her to drop out of the race. I want her to stay in until she has made herself good and irrelevant. Since the time to bow out with grace and sportsmanship has long past, I imagine her like the Red Queen at the end of Through the Lookingglass, shrunk to the size of a doll and running round and round... posted to MetaTalk by oneirodynia at 11:28 AM on May 25, 2008
On a less-about-Clinton note, I happy she's stayed in because way more people have registered to vote, far more state's issues are being brought up and debated in those states as they actually become sort of relevant, and we haven't had the truncated primary season we've become accustomed to. The states jostling to go first in order to be relevant have learned a small lesson, as well. In short, the process is playing out like it's supposed to, and I think that's a good thing.

MeTa post: What gives?
Why the hell would a strong, empowered woman need Howard Dean to ride to her rescue? As Clinton herself would say: "I anticipate it's gonna get even, you know, hotter and if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen and I'm very much at home in the kitchen. So I think I'll stick around."

Poll: McCain beats Obama in Ohio, but Hillary beats McCain. Same holds for Florida apparently. If Obama loses both Florida and Ohio, there is virtually no hope of being elected.

I'm doubtful of the relevance of a poll taken more than six months before the election and before the democratic nomination has been settled. You wouldn't look at polls from December, 2007 as a reliable way to gauge what would be going on in May, 2008. Not if you wanted to... [more]

If we want to talk of Obama's faults, that would be removing his name from Michigan and then using that fact to whine about Michigan's later inclusion as a tiebreaker,

Cite, please. Of Obama whining.

BTW, tiebreaker? What tie is that? Obama is so far ahead now that when the MI and FL delegates are seated in full (and he will seat them, natch), that he wins a majority of pledged delegates anyway. Especially since this week 40... [more]

Well, my most popular post was Neighborhood of Make-Believe, but I don't feel like that had much to do with me, other than I liked it and posted it (with a glaring typo). It was really just a matter of timing, to be frank; I'm sure someone else would have posted it had they seen it. Yes, he wanted it deleted. So they deleted it. That's fine. I think people think of AskMe threads as entertainment vis-a-vis MeFi threads. While AskMe can often be entertaining, I think honoring posters' requests for deletion should trump other reasons for keeping them around. It's supposed to be a site that helps people, after all.

MeTa post: Thanks for the Catalogs...
I guess I'm the only person here to feel disgust at the thought of actually trying to get as many dead-tree catalogs as possible. I think that's pretty fucked up.

How is it any different from getting books? You either keep them forever, give them to your friends, or leave them out on the hall table for your neighbors. Most catalogs are printed on 100% recycled paper anyway.
posted to MetaTalk by oneirodynia at 7:23 PM on April 12, 2008
Catalogs are issued serially; each iteration makes the previous one obsolete as product availability changes. This obsolescence also applies to some textbooks, and in the long view, you could say, all books, but there's certainly a vast disparity in disposability between novels and McMaster-Carr catalogs.

The *majority* of 500 page specialty catalogs are sent out only upon request, and they don't just send you a new one if you haven't ordered... [more]

So, you want people with specialized knowledge of the law to go through and sort out every possible federal, state, county, and city law that applies only to you. For free. I can't think of how that's not ridiculous.

oneirodynia: no, but I was looking for suggestions and perhpas things that might be overlooked.

Then that's what you should have asked. I'm not sure they were catering to white nationalists, I think they were just being dumb. About ten years ago, one of the kids in a class I taught showed up with a shirt they had recently gotten at Mervyn's. It had Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck around the Looney Tunes logo, and above all that it said "Loonies BLUNT Humor".
