Am I a boy or a girl?
Before I clicked, I half-consciously assumed that Mikeonads.com was a play on "my gonads." You know, gender, gonads, haha. No, it's Mike on ads.
And I'm all man, baby, 100%. My heterosexual boyfriend is going to get a BIG suprise tonight!

OMNOMNOMopoly
Wow! I used to work at a pizza joint, and although we made everything from scratch and bought our produce from a local supplier, our paper goods and flour came from Sysco. I had no idea that you could buy a few microwaves and set yourself up your own make-n-bake Sysco restaurant!
The Syscophobes among us will probably also enjoy John and Karen Hess's book "The Taste of America." First published in the 1970's, it was a book before its time. It skewered the... [more]

Unmasking the perp
What I find especially troubling is that it's private entities, rather than the government, who are guilty this time around. Bad governments can (at least in theory) be overthrown or voted out. Far less can be done when it's bad private actors who have unlimited amounts of cash to throw around.

Almost perfect, but they ruined it a bit by veering ever so slightly into jokey ha-ha territory. Some of their other videos are great, too.

A youtube comment from the Ghostbusters video:
"Well these days gays and feminazis control the music and movie industry. Also this group of kids are all cultureless losers and have no taste in real music like this. . . Music from the 80s-early 90s was one of the best era since Mozart."

I remember the smell, too.
All of the coolest girls in my class were obsessed with Lisa Frank stickers - she was sort of a Thomas Kinkaide for the lavender unicorns and rainbows set. I preferred the more minimalist Mrs. Grossman stickers.

Animals amaze me by their sheer resilience. My foster cat had to have one of her forelegs amputated, and as soon as the stitches came out, she threw herself right into the task of re-learning how to jump and climb and bat at the dogs. The only way you'd ever guess that she wasn't born without that leg is that when she wants attention, she'll waggle her stump at you. She was 10 when she had the operation.
I'm sure she and her mom make a great therapy team.

Wentworth, the peeping toms' school, is closer in selectivity and academic standards to Devry or ITT Tech. These boys are probably every bit as bright as they sound.

Maybe I'm just getting a different read on this than some other people. I liked the "popped collar college boy with a heart of gold" aspect. No doubt, he approached this with the idea that asking to cuddle at a brothel would be OMG hooarz hilarity. And to his surprise, the woman he chose was a real, friendly person, and he let himself relax. Not enough to play Scattergories, but a bit.
If he were a much brighter person, he would have been able to draw Toni out... [more]

March '79 to October '97: One Mans Polaroid Collection
I like how artless and uncomposed many of the photos are. It feel less like a photo-diary, and more like once a day, for just a blink, I'm actually looking through his eyes and seeing whatever his gaze happens to fall upon at that moment.
It's also a much different experience to see these now that he's dead, and to think, "I wish I had known more about him" rather than, "This guy is really cool. I wonder what he'll do next."

Well done, I think, and clever. For those of you who take issue with the song, or the band, or what they were wearing or what their facial hair looks like or how they were standing: that's what you came away with, is it?

V is for Vegetable
It seems like Freddie won, in the end, and good on him.
Kids hate the veggies they don't love. Veggies aren't kid friendly, and kids' aversions aren't predictors of their adult tastes.
Rather than forcing things that tasted horrible to Freddie, or giving up and going straight to feeding him hamburgers and french fries, Freddie and his parents explored. Maybe I'll use his book-deal book next time I need to cook dinner for my adult friends who hate... [more]

No Intelligence Allowed, indeed.
I'm confused by the assertion that there are proponents of ID who are not theists. By definition, intelligent design adherents believe that an intelligent being is responsible for life on Earth. Do agnostic/atheist ID'ers believe in aliens?

Clicking around, it seems like Berlinsky is just some random contrarian dork who's here because that's where the party is. He doesn't have anything interesting to add to the conversation.
Come on, you people who insist that Intelligent Design has nothing to do with a Christian interpretation of God. If ID has nothing to do with religion, you can point me toward some credible, non-theist thinkers who support your claims.

New Security Blanket, Stat!
This strikes me as overbearing and creepy, not cute. Woobies are transient, and sometimes babies lose them before they're done with them. Normal parents deal, and they wait out the tantrums until their toddlers find their next favorite thing ever.

That's quality engineering right there. I loved the part where Jerry was all "glarg, glarg, glarg, screw you, I'm having my own party right here with the tennis ball," but finally gave in and dropped the ball back into the chute.

The Major Little League
Amazing. I'm glad the parents were all such good sports about it.
Kids of little-league age have a somewhat different sense of humor, and because they were the targets of this mission, I don't really think this even qualifies as a prank. I'm not sure that they'd see anything funny about this; to a nine or ten year old, it would probably be pure magic. Confirmation that the world really is magical, and extraordinary things can happen, even on a mundane Saturday afternoon.... [more]

I'm not going to call out anyone in particular, but it seems like at least some of the people
in this thread have enjoyed a concrete enema or two too many.
Whether this was perpetrated by completely unknown people or the cast from Cheers, it was good fun and the scale doesn't matter.

"I gotta sleep under some Chinaman named after a duck's dork."
I've been waiting for that NPR piece or something like it for a long, long time, but I was disappointed. Gedde Watanabe sounds almost mystified that he gets accosted when he's recognized by Asian-Americans.
If there's a God, then there's a hell, and I hope that Gedde Watanabe's hell involves soaking up every single bit of Long Duk Dong-related abuse every vaguely Asian-looking kid had to put up with. Watanabe was in his thirties at the time, and the eighties wasn't that... [more]

My own favorite ice cream man moment took place in the early nineties, when I was living in the Mission in SF. One evening, just as the sun was setting, I walked right into the Convergence of the Jingle Carts. You know, the guys who push handcarts full of frozen treats down the city sidewalks?
Hundreds of Jingle Carts chiming in cacophonous unity, pushing toward their goal, the ramp of a giant truck that would whisk the Jingle Carts to Daly City or wherever to be... [more]

Animal Minds
We're living in an exciting time.
One development that I don't love about the past twenty years in dog training is how enamored some trainers are with Behaviorism. It's great that we're using more positive methods now, but some folks seem to really want to treat dogs like input/output devices. They call dogs "lemon brains" because that's about the amount of grey matter that domestic dogs carry around in their noggins. But size doesn't matter, and those... [more]
