Like all great chefs his love of the subject matter was delightful. He will be missed, and it's great to read how many others grew up watching him.

recycled web visuals and other web tools
I love these but wishes there was a 'one search engine'/repository of all of them. I don't care the format - could be FactoryJoe's on Flickr, could be anything else. Having a bunch of them across multiple domains means lots of hunting.
I put together a bunch of the domains at Rollyo and I'll be sure to add any posted in this thread and check if AskMe has any related questions.

Err, hi - I liked you better the first time when you were called Spokeo or, if you prefer to host things on your own server rather than aggregate, People Aggregator. Ah yes, so many computer problems to solve, and so many startups already doing the same thing, seemingly with no differentiating factor and a silly name to boot.

I'M ON UR PLAYA BURNING UR MAN
Oh goody, a thread where Playa haters can get their hate on.
I don't care if it's jumped the shark, if the Hip Kids have moved onto something hipper, or 'insert your trendy excuse here' - some of us dare to drop our cynical facades and oh my gosh, actually enjoy the event. I find the actions of the guy who burnt it down rude, pathetic attention grabbing nonsense, and yes, arson. Did he have a motive to do it? Don't see one on his 'defense' page,... [more]

Look, do pranks, laugh at the people at the BM organization - fine. I get it... nobody's perfect. They aren't, none of us are. Yeah, I heard about the joke about burning the man by burning it in advance. It's one thing to have a joke in a culture - it's another thing to act on it. To break a covenant with your community (which is what he's done) like this is pathetic.

Thanks for the posts to Addis' subsequent interviews. I still don't agree with what he did, but the Wired interview was illuminating (if you pardon the pun) and he doesn't come off as such an asshat as in that statement. Don't suppose that Pirate cat interview has a transcript though...

Ah, Torontofilter always makes me smile - seeing my hometown with new eyes is always good. Hi Res means new wallpaper, although I'm so homesick for T.O. that might not be a good thing to do.
Don't forget to see the portfolio section for other non-T.O 77vs. 07 photos - community photo logs are as fascinating as group blogs.
Great find, thanks! A global project out of this would be wonderful to see as well.

Thanks guys over at the NYT! That's the kind of investigative journalism I look for - now if only you had done something about the whole 'investigative journalism' thing when we were oh, I don't know, going into a WAR. Priorities people - priorities! What you investigate is important - especially when you fail to investigate, and turn into a laughing stock/corporate suckup/administration brownnoser/insert epitaph here. What a shame, considering their once gloried history.

nice find there, blucevalo. Also that headline "Death has wrapped its large mantle around Bergman" has a lovely poeticness about it - wonder if that comes from being translated from another language.

papakwanz, I wanted a citation on the rumour that Maher was gay - I won't bother asking for a citation on the other stuff, since I think you're misrepresenting most of his political opinions. Then again, if you want your comedians 'warm and genuine', well, what's the point of your comedy? Since when should they be 'warm'? This is comedy, not Oprah, no?

It's nice to see some folks in the thread see more dimensions of human nature than pure goodness and evil. I think the snark also arises from the phrasing of the FPP - fizzing with sadness, pretty people, paranoiac screed, the whole 'LOL CRAZY PERSON" tone of it. Granted, her blog entries might be a little out there, but there's a reason why they say, "speak ill not of the dead" - because to do so is crass. Not MeTa worthy, but still, a little iffy. Yeah, the secret show was the talk on the White Stripes bulletin board... apparently someone close to the band leaked a prospective location, and a bunch of us coordinated getting together. I do think that the 'playing on a transit bus in Winnipeg', though, has got to be one of the cooler things that I've read of in a long, long time. I think it's a theme in their music - the loss of innocence and whatnot, and I can see why. As long as people find it reasonable to download music, they're going to be fine with people playing music on the air before they're supposed to.
