Canadian Brass
The Canadian Brass are tons of fun. Class Goat, for whatever reason, the trumpet and horn guys are almost all rotating -- they don't really have the same total lineup for more than a year or two. The trumpet chairs in particular are really demanding and require lots of musical versatility, but the kinds of guys and gals that they get to do it (usually) have their hearts in orchestral brass playing and eventually want to get out of the touring lifestyle to try to get an orchestra gig.... Soup, stew, broth, and stock
In Seattle, we go to Uwajimaya for "chicken breast frames" (just raw chicken carcasses with quite a bit of meat still on them" for stock making. They're something like $.60 a pound and they come prewrapped in 2 lb. packages. Totally convenient. I would reccoment similar big Asian markets for things like these; if nothing else, I like seeing the approving smile of an old Vietnamese lady as she sees a 21-year-old college student rifling through the "chicken parts" bin.

So, where are you from?
Yeah, that was pretty weird. I thought it was interesting, if nothing else, to watch the shape of her mouth as she makes the different voices -- she really does shift it to the side when doing the Texas accent, for example. It really does sort of look like a cartoon.
I thought the Seattle accent was a little forced-sounding, considering that she's from Whidbey Island.

mermaid and prince, simultaneously
This seems entirely legit. I'm not a good singer by any means, but I sang quite a bit when I was a boy alto, and by now I'm a baritone with a very well-developed falsetto. My "chest voice" range is extremely limited (probably from about G at the bottom of the bass clef staff to G or A above it), but my falsetto -- which sounds like a weak little boy -- goes up almost two octaves higher.
When this guy sings the girl parts, it's breathy in spots, which I think... [more]

Awesome. We've been using Full Circle Farms (Seattle CSA) for a while, which we love because you can go week-to-week. But we've been looking for a source of local, "free-range" meats. Naturally raised bacon in the Seattle area, anyone?

Seriously, though, Herman Leonard is great. I love that so many of these look half-posed, half-candid.

Man, Mark Bittman is so cool. His "Best Recipes in the World" book (I think that's what it's called?) is great.

Holy crap, I forgot how much I fucking LOVED Bugs Bunny.
I fully intend to use these cartoons 10 years from now, when I'm teaching some smart-mouthed middle schoolers about opera. THAT will show 'em.

Theremin Crazy
The Video Killed the Radio Star one is pretty terrible, though.
I always thought that people playing theremin looked like the people in the Happy Hands club from Napoleon Dynamite. I mean that as no offense to the hearing impaired.

Admittedly a bit newsfilter-y, but it's an excellent article that shows an interesting perspective. Non-Seattlites probably aren't familiar with the news story; here is a bit of a primer if you're interested.

Russian Bear Cartoons
In an effort to determine the top crime fighting agency in the country, the President narrowed the field to three finalists, the CIA, the FBI, and the N.Y.P.D. The three remaining contenders were given the task of catching a rabbit which was released into the forest.
The CIA went into the forest. They placed animal informants throughout.
They questioned all plant and mineral witnesses. After three months of extensive investigation... [more]

Free (Audio) Books.
Speaking of which, what's going on with Scott Sigler lately? I enjoyed Earthcore when I was first getting hooked on podcasts (the summer when I had nothing to do but work, and the drive to work took half an hour), but I couldn't listen to more than an episode or two of the next book he put out... it was terrible.

Christopher Kimball pisses me off - he's sort of arrogant and I hate, hate, hate hearing cooking people go off on "don't use your SUPERMARKET variety such-and-such here, use this organic, full-grain, home-raised bullshit that will set you back $6 for a vacuum sealed, hand-packed jar".
My favorite cookbook author? Mark Bittman. I have such a man crush on that guy. I love that his books (and articles, and he has videos on the NY Times website) are no-nonsense;... [more]

dw - you probably work at the same "large university in Seattle" that I attend. Don't you find all the on-campus coffee absolutely horrible? (save for Parnassus in the art building; it is teh win).
I'm all for supporting the underdog, and the idea of living in Seattle and going to Tully's is appealing to me. But their coffee has been, in my opinion, underwhelming.

£10,000 in coins, arranged as dominoes
That's fantastic. Although I have to wonder whether or not this was really all in one take. There are so many cuts that it would be easy to splice in bits and pieces to make the whole thing seem complete.
Still, very impressive. I used to be way into this kind of stuff.

Yeah, from watching a couple of "making of" bits for these things, it seems that they almost always do groups of 9 or so, with a few missing, so that if one falls over, it's not the end of the world.
Anyone remember that famous early-90s clip of the VHS boxes? It was a bunch of guys at a Blockbuster or something, and they spent all night setting it up. It made the rounds on America's Funniest Videos - the days before YouTube, natch.

No Need To Knead Needlessly
Does this come in a low carb version? I'm really trying to watch my weight.
Just kidding, of course. I am an avid bread baker and find this admittedly slightly sacreligious - I'm used to the stages of proofing dough, the poolish or biga, the hot pizza stone in the oven, the lame used to slash lines in the top, the rich creamy crumb, etc.
That having been said, this does look fantastic, and I will definitely try it sometime this coming weekend... [more]

Yeah, it's kind of dorky and "bleeding edge", and yes, it's been on Lifehacker before (didn't know that they were so bad) and yes, it was mentioned several days ago in a comment - but I'm still excited about it, and I thought that at least one other person would have a use for it.
