Itchy McItchy

The Itch: The New Yorker's suprisingly interesting Annals of Medicine article which includes the story of a woman whose scalp itched so badly she scratched through it. And then through her skull.

Little boxes, little boxes...

I live in Brooklyn, and I'm moving. I need boxes! The usual liquor store route is failing me, utterly. Grocery boxes always seem wet and/or greasy. Anyone know any great secrets, or the best places to buy cardboard in bulk?

Gave one, finally got one.

Today a mysterious box arrived, which turned out to be my long-lost OLPC! Are there any other Mefites playing around with them?

Our outflow will run with many colors.

My wife paints with oils. We're buying a house with a septic system. Will cleaning brushes in the sink be a problem?

We have a "joined" date in user profiles. Can we have a "left" date for the pushers of the big red button?

Googlewell?

Does the thread of all threads (Givewell) break Google Reader? Or is it a feed settings thing here? Or (more likely) am I doing something wrong?

Halberstam's last column.

David Halberstam's last column, The History Boys - Politics and Power, is in this month's Vanity Fair magazine. In other news, the student driving him at the time of his death, Kevin Jones, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter. (Previously)

When is a kilogram not a kilogram?

Scientists will use perfect silicon spheres to determine how many silicon atoms make up a kilogram, and this will be used as the new international prototype — bringing the kilogram into line with other base units such as the meter. The current international prototype, a lump of platinum and iridium, is securely tucked away inside a French vault.

Next Up: Nuclear waste reefs

Artificial reef off Fort Lauderdale coast now an ecological disaster. Then: A 1972 Goodyear news release proclaimed the reef would "provide a haven for fish and other aquatic species,' and noted the "excellent properties of scrap tires as reef material.' Now: "They're a constantly killing coral destruction machine."

Pazz & Jop 2006.

The 2006 Village Voice Pazz and Jop critics poll is now online: 494 music critics picked their favorite albums and singles from the past year. It's the first poll since Robert Christgau was unceremoniously let go from the paper. How did they do? Is this thing even relevant anymore? See for yourself: here's the lists and "xgau's" essays since it started.

Dick Cheney's quiet coup d'etat

TPM's David Kurtz: I've gone from being open to the idea of an Imperial Vice Presidency to being convinced that historians will debate whether something approaching a Cheney-led coup d'etat has occurred, in which some of the powers of the Executive were extra-constitutionally usurped by the Office of the Vice President. More about the Vice President, Richard "Dick" Cheney.

People with lots of time have novel takes on Star Wars

Two new takes on the world of Star Wars: "The public choice economics of Star Wars: A Straussian reading"; and "A New Sith, or Revenge of the Hope:Reconsidering Star Wars IV in the light of I-III." Were the Jedi actually useless and powerhungry? Was R2-D2 the true hero of the rebellion? Most importantly, where do people find the time to come up with this stuff?

Paul Theroux's America

Paul Theroux's writing is, at it's best, a long, dreamy meditation on a place, it's people, and the time he spent among them. His latest piece, an op-ed in the New York Times about America in 2007, is no exception.

AskMe vs Slate's Explainer?

Slate's Explainer is generally a pretty entertaining and interesting read. Now, they've posted a list of the questions they couldn't answer this year. I was wondering whether some of the AskMe crowd might just be able to knock a few off the list.
