The Top Public Intellectuals
I'd like to think that this shows that people in Turkye care about their intellectual image in the world. And that it's an attempt at constructive interaction with the west.
On a more negative note it reminds me of nationalistic Turkish rallies being organised in Germany for Germans of Turkish descent where they're incited to basically stay Turks in exile instead of identifying with being German.
And yes; the notion 'greatest intellectual' is... [more]

Actually at a certain point he's just talking over the backdrop of this band doing its thing. And it doesn't sound bad at all. At that point I remembered that he became a pastor later in life.
You can tell from this song, probably 5 years before he became a pastor.

Are Americans leaving the US?
I'm surprised by the emotional reactions by US mefites about people who leave not being reliable f.i.
In my experience in NL nobody gets riled up when somebody decides to emigrate. To be with their spanish boyfriend, to work in Germany, to have better diving opportunities in Australia, to find an exciting career in California f.i.
Can it be that US americans emigrating challenges the self-image that the US is the pinnacle of societies, object of envy for the... [more]

Ouch. Your comment started out so nice&interesting. But then: wurst! That pains me. We Dutch are not some quaint sort of Germans. They are Deutsch. We are completely different. We eat worst!
It's as if I'd talk to a Canadian blithely about his president Bush and chastise him for his country's unprovoked invasion of Iraq.

Mutant, I was taking the piss out of the narcissism of small differences" that the Dutch tend to have towards the Germans. Zelfspot (self-mocking)!
No apologies necessary of course.

Stynxno: assinine
Yes! Of course the boring correct spelling 'asinine' in the meaning of a pejorative is derived from 'asinine' meaning pertaining to an animal. Which is in turn from 'equus asinus', meaning 'donkey'. While the synonym for 'donkey' is 'ass' in the meaning of the animal. But 'ass' has also a pejorative meaning. This all you pointed out by simply adding a superfluous 's'.
Very elegant. A delightful quip.

Don't stay a Virgin
I seem to recall that the NEE party was mentioned previously on metafilter.
I wonder whether the things mentioned in the 'net neutrality' link are true; that there's a big conspiracy covered up with NDAs between ISPs worldwide to end net neutrality.

An Unforgivable Name
If the evilness of Adolf Hitler is related to his particular unique genetic make up and Adolf Hitlers DNA was a unique mix of both his parents DNA and these guys only inherit some part of the genes of one of Adolf Hitlers parents that means that the evilness of these guys' DNA is extremely tenuous.

Old Weird Europe
I like our yearly festivities of Saint Nicolas (Sinterklaas) who threatens to take away naughty kids to Madrid in a burlap sack when he arrives over our roofs, like Wodan. And his black helpers who have whips made out of twigs to chastize the kids and who wear spanish 17th century court attire.
I do wonder whether it's a bit racist though.

Fuzz It Up
Fuzzing it up is a common practice in government. You hide intention and responsibility. You have one person say one thing, and another person the exact opposite. You create a blizzard of paper, so much paper that actual evidence is lost in the glut. And of course, you deny anything and everything you can deny — particularly the obvious. (Denying the obvious is always popular.) You produce noise, distraction and confusion. People rarely think of this as a well-established... [more]

PT: Pick any issue, any year and you will find some interesting artwork.
Exactly.
I also found the advertisements very intriguing: we like to think that our modern culture is overly focused on beauty ideals that are not attainable for people. That people feel there's something wrong with them as a result. That it didn't use to be this way.
Just browsing through the advertisements of a 1910 issue I was struck by the number of advertised... [more]
