The rise of sea levels as a result of climate change and how to defend against flooding

A Dutch government commission came up with a plan to prevent flooding in spite of climate change during the next two centuries. Predicting a sea level rise of between 0.65 and 1.3 metres (2.15 and 4.3 feet) by 2100, and up to four metres by 2200, the commission said the chances of flooding multiplied 100-fold with every 1.3 metre rise in the sea level.

What to ask other than "What do you do"?

What other questions can I use than "what do you do" at the SF mefi meetup tonight?

what are the Queensberry rules of relationship fights

What kind of conflict resolution do you use in your relationship? There are it seems to me at least two types: 1. rules that you agree on as a couple to use during a conflict so as to address the conflict but also resolve it constructively 2. rules/approaches that you use unilaterally to approach a conflict

Is the clear cut dichotomy true?

Jill Bolte Taylor uses a very clear cut dichotomy when explaining the respective roles of the left and right hemisphere: one is oriented towards parrallel processing of sense data, the other towards serial, conscious, target-oriented processing. Is this reflective of the modern state of the art neurological schientific knowledge? It's an intuitively attractive explanation. But is it true? It sounds simplistic.

I shot Saint-Exupéry down

I shot his plane down. First his fighter plane was just lost under unknown circumstances during WWII. People speculated on a possible suicide of the writer. Then his golden armband was found by a fisherman in the sea. Then the plane of well known french writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was found in the mediteranean. Now 88 year old journalist Horst Rippert, who was a fighter pilot during WWII, admits that he shot down Saint-Exupéry and that he regretted this his whole life.

Help me be able to make mobile calls while visiting the US

I'd really like to be able to make mobile calls during my visit to the US. I'm wondering what my best option is. 1. It would be nice if I'd be able to use my old european GSM. I'd buy a cheap prepaid SIM in the US 2. if that wouldn't work I'd like to buy a very cheap second hand cellphone in San Francisco and use it with a US prepaid SIM.

On we sweep with thrashing oar...

Hail San Franciscans. I will be landing on your shores bringing you a message of goodwill from the Rhine delta people. Let's engage in the ancient ritual of raising glasses of beer to signal the friendly relations between our nations. Or to put it differently: I'll be in SF soon and I'd like to buy you a beer. And I'm sure you have plenty to catch up with each other too.

How can I provide two view-versions of a single document?

How to write one document that translates into several targeted documents? In other words: how can I provide one kind of view on my thesis to people from university, who care about definitions of terms, literature references, methodical preambles, and another to other people who are also interested in sidebars and anecdotal evidence? Some parts of the text are relevant to both.

Putins spy war on the West

Putins spy war on the West White House intelligence advisers believe no other country is as aggressive as Russia in trying to obtain US secrets, with the possible exception of China. In particular the SVR, as the former KGB’s foreign intelligence arm is now known, is using a network of undercover agents in America to gather classified information about sensitive technologies, including military projects under development and high-tech research.

the guns of august....redux

Richard Holbrooke delivers an analysis and forecast of how the current situation could trigger a chain reaction that would lead to world war. He refers to Barbara Tuchmans Guns of August, apparently a political science classic, that has been mentioned here on mefi. Here's the article in dutch with an appropriate picture of the murder of archduke Franz Ferdinand.
