On the macbook, under sharing you can enable ftp or smb access, so you can just ftp the files over from your windows machine (I just use ftp instead of smb, since it is just a one time thing). Once you turn it on, on the windows machine go to:

Summertime Beers?
ross- you are in seattle. So unfortunately Magic Hat is out of range for us on the east coast, and I miss them dearly.
Some good options, if you want to have a story to tell, drive down to Georgetown Brewery and pickup a growler or two of the Manny's Pale ale (which has a nice citrus finish) or the Roger's Pilsner. You will have to pay for the container, but its around $6-8 a fill for the growler once you buy the container.

Should I get cats considering my/their living conditions?
I live currently with two cats that have been together almost from kittens (about a year apart, same mother, different litter) in a 440+ sq foot apartment. They have one litter box, I just have to clean it much more than if I just had one cat.
Also, while two cats can keep each other company (if they are litter mates), you can also find solo cats that can work out. Some older cats do fine by themselves, and are harder for shelters to adopt out vs kittens.... [more]

regarding indoor/outdoor. my cats are indoor only, as the areas I have lived just haven't been practical. One cat could care less and just likes chasing the flys when they get into the apartment. The other one does want to get out and go on adventures, so I've started leash training him, and that seems to give him some outdoor adventure time (and provide me with comfort knowing he isn't going to be hit by a drunk on capitol hill).

How do we kick out our roommate?
Your best action is to meet with the other 4 people, and contact the landlord as a group. State specifically you are having issues with tenant X, and all of you have decided either she goes or you all go.
Tenant X has been able to get away with what she is doing simply because of the nature of the house. It has been free flow, and so one or two people get fed up, they move out, someone else comes into the space. So there house is never low on rent, and the landlord is... [more]

Los Angeles-area sustainably raised, grass-fed, etc. dairy?
for dairy, you might want to find a hari krishna community and see if you can swap choirs with them for milk and cheese. From my limited experience (visiting one such farm in central pa) they raise the animals and do not sell any for slaughter. When they get too old to milk, they go out to pasture. The same for the male calves, which are used for basic labor around the farms. They also tend to have a collection of chickens for eggs, etc. themselves.
I guess the solution... [more]

Is my Ikea desk killing my MacBook Pro hard drive?
put it on a coolpad.
Seriously, I carry the same one i've had since 2000 with me, for use on the road and on the desks I setup my macbook pro on for any longer period. Being able to pivot the laptop alone is worth it.
It also automagically lifts your laptop off of whatever surface you have put it on, and will help keep airflow going around it (and the tilt makes it a little easier to use on a desk), for $20 its a good deal.

Really, the best answer for this is see a doctor, and a nutritionist. The starting point before this is to keep a food diary, so you can show them what you are eating over the course of a week/month, etc. and they can help make suggestions. Supplements are not replacements for a well balanced diet.

Once he starts using the litter robot exclusively, and has started to not be skittish when it turns on, you can try leaving it in auto mode.

If you setup apache, you would have to change its default settings to share your home folder instead of the standard setup, and to deny anything but localhost connections (or else anyone at anytime can browse your files over port 80).
To be able to get image previews you would either have to pre export the images through something like iphoto or picasa, or use gallery2 to generate albums based on the contents of the folders, but then you are getting into php/mysql land.
