MeTa post: Thought or not
When people start cussing out other members of the site we try to put a lid on it.

To the extent that people on this site use a lot of coarse language talking about other people and things elsewhere, that's less of an issue that I personally am concerned about.

I like some of the imaginative cussing that goes on here, but I do feel that sometimes people are just sort of doing it lazily and sloppily because they're bored and bored lazy talking... [more]

Ask post: How do you/did you plan, compromise, or agree on standards for your sex life?
follow-up from someone who would prefer to remain anonymous. I don't really like the direction a lot of these answers take. In my relationship, I'm the one with the higher sex drive (every day for me, every 2nd or 3rd day for him), and my partner isn't obligated to "help me out" when he's not in the mood. The fact that I often want more sex than I get does NOT mean that he owes me or that I'll eventually cheat on him and that it'll be his fault. That's crazy talk! If I were to... [more]

Ask post: Intermediate Swimming Advice?
I'm in good cardiovascular shape but I can only make it through one lap in the pool, and I'm absolutely exhausted afterwards.

This is actually quite typical for novice swimmers. This can mean either

1. your breathing is off [does it happen when you do backstroke]
2. your breathing is fine but you just need to get fit.

I literally worked up to fitness swimming a lap at a time. A beginners... [more]

Ask post: as far from Shopping Mall State as possible
There are an awful lot of MeFites who went to Hampshire, including me. Even though the place is different from when it started and different from when I went there even, I think that their approach to academics was really different from any other place where I knew people except maybe Evergreen.

Keep in mind that websites of pretty much any academic higher ed places have to fit into a pretty narrow vision -- must appeal to parents and donors as well as students, need to... [more]

I felt that same way about the Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina Saskatchewan when I was there. It's way off the beaten path but really gave you an idea of the place and the history and was a decently priced and nice place to stay besides.

Ask post: How to complain like a polite human.
It doesn't matter whether you are a prude or not. You found the language on the tag unpleasant to you personally and wanted to let someone at Timbuk2 know about it. Since your b-i-l already cut the tag off, it's unlikely that you can return or swap the merchanidise, but it's not a bad idea to just let someone know "Hey I got something from your store as a gift because I like your products and I felt the language on the tag was a little too [insert non-omg word here] for his business environment... Ask post: Scrabble
Practice helps a LOT. There are a few things you can apply yourself to learning early on that will really help you out.

1. two letter words - this seems sort of extraneous until you realize that lot of players make a lot of points by doing two basic things 1) making a lot of teeny words in one turn 2) using all seven letters. It's easier to learn to do #1 than #2. So you can do something like this

Which is more likely to impress a non-tournament player? Superior grasp of the English language, or words like 'za'?

If she is in any way serious about Scrabble, she'll be more impressed that you know words like ZA. There's a bit of a divide between people that think words like XI and ZA aren't "real words" and people who think they're essential to the game of Scrabble and doing well at it. I am in the second category, as are most people in... [more]

Jessamyn wins at vocabulary.

And I was afraid the plural of moue was something like mieaux or something and all the its/it's spazmos would lose it.

friendship radio says creative boning is due out in the 2.0 XFN spec, but I just use "Geographical: none" since it's invisible and all.

Ask post: Help me outfit myself for my expedition to the Yukon. Well, not quite... but pretty close.
A lot of this will depend somewhat on your lifestyle while you're here. If you're going to be commuting, you'll need certain clothes whereas if you're living on campus [and not paying for heat] you'll need something different. If you're really into oudoor sports [or decide you love snowboarding or showshoeing] you'll get something else. A lot of people manage to be decent looking in New England despite having to dress for winter.

That said, the answer to this question... [more]

Ask post: Please help me overcome my aversion to staying in hostels.
I have stayed in hostels as an early-thirtysomething [a while ago] and found them fine, a little noisy and with long lines for the showers. Sharing big rooms with a lot of people was hit or miss but you couldn't beat the price. In a few countries I've been to, notably Australia and Canada, there were sort of midrange student hotel type places which were like YMCA sorts of places, a little spendier than hostels but with private rooms, sometimes a bathroom down the hall. These accomodations don't... [more]

Ask post: Prob NSFW: What are the most tactful/smooth ways to ask if a new casual sex partner has an STD?
The really slippery slope, in my experience, is not oral but rather the easy progression from snuggling to rubbing things together to "well, I'll just put it in a little bit." Because if you are ok with having her rub her wet parts up and down your shaft, how much riskier could it be to just get that little bit more close? That, not oral, is where you have your tricky judgment calls and risky behavior.

This brings up a good point, you can... [more]

MeFi post: Virtucon alone makes over 9 billion dollars a year!
I drove by that place a few times when I was in Abu Dhabi. It didn't look like that much fun. The thing about being in the UAE generally is that their idea of decadent is a lot of super rich-person stuff but doesn't include like a lot of drugs and sex tourism and what I think many Westerners would think of as "over the top" wretched excess sorts of things. For example I don't think "a bit of mile-high champers" means what I think it means....... [more]

Ask post: Which doctor do I go to to get rid of worms?
If by worms you mean pinworms (little worms that you can maybe see in your poop) then you don't need a specialist at all to deal with them. Your doc will confirm that you have them and then give you some medicine which will kill them dead. If you don't go to a doc, you'll wind up with recurring stomach cramps and you'll still have worms. It's a simple enough thing that yeah, you can go to the doc to set him/her up as your primary care physician and have them treat your worms at the same time. To... [more]

Ask your librarian how to unblock it. According to a decent interpretation of the Children's Internet Protection Act, if your library is filtering to be in compliance with CIPA, it should have a provision for unblocking sites at an adult patron's request. It would be helpful if you let us know what library you're talking about, whether you were in the adult's or children's area and what the error message was that you got when you tried to access AskMe. Did you try to get to the rest of MeFi?... [more]

Also if you're talking about your particular public library (just going by your profile page) it looks like the reference area computers may hav filtering but the computer lab computers don't. The teen area is monitored with SurfControl which means if you wanted to unblock something there, you might be out of luck since they would just direct you to the adult comptuer lab. According to SurfControl's test-a-site page, AskMe is blocked because it's in the Blogs & Forums category.... [more]

Is that a category libraries generally block?

No, not usually. There's library policies and then there's federal level legislation about filtering. CIPA [linked to above] basically says that libraries that receive federal funding (i.e. not all libraries by a long shot) have a legal obligation to filter out obscenity (I'm overgeneralizing but that's the gist) and so libraries who get money for internet connectivity or their phone lines have to install...
