Stem Cell Awareness and The Black Community
Does the US still charge you to be on the registry if you're a white guy?
Or a white lady, but they get grants pretty frequently to let people sign up for free and then you're signed up for life. I signed up recently after a MeTa marrow drive and I'm happy I did.

BBS documentary author tries to raise funds work full-time on computer history
Then, once you'd raised $20,000 take it public. The hard thing now is that for all of the public notice this thread gives you it is to only raise another $5,000.
Kickstarter only funds you if you hit your goal though, which encourages people to make their goals realistic. You can go over your goal but if you're under you get nothing.
I opted to fund this a while ago. I hope geociti.es goes live soon.
Also I fixed the links.

But many people in this thread are arguing that
My take is that it's a few, they're not the majority, and that ALLCAPS sarcastic responses are not helping people find common ground.

More like David "NUT", am I right?
Pretty interesting. His opinion really seems to be the hrm index way and yet at the same time the Home Office is distancing itself from him saying "Prof Nutt's views are his own and do not reflect the views of Government. The Government is clear - we are determined to crack down on all illegal substances and minimise their harm to health and society as a whole." which sounds an awful lot like saying "it's bad because it's illegal and illegal because it's bad."

Actually, let me explain slightly more.... you included a pullquote on the front page of MetaFilter that talked about women being stripped naked forced to eat shit. Now, some of us may be able to sit back and read the article and ruminate on what's going on there and view it sort of abstractly and as something that is happening far away. Other people can't. Other people have some sort of visceral reaction and don't know what to do with it and humor is their outlet. Other people, it makes them... [more]

The Decline of the English Department
"[A]t the root is the failure of departments of English across the country to champion, with passion, the books they teach and to make a strong case to undergraduates that the knowledge of those books and the tradition in which they exist is a human good in and of itself. What departments have done instead is dismember the curriculum, drift away from the notion that historical chronology is important, and substitute for the books themselves a scattered array of secondary... the English Dept. to Linguistics is like apples to sea cucumbers.
I did both in undergrad and decided to follow neither into a Masters degree but I found that my studies of semantics and my studies of postmodern blabityblah actually sort of informed each other fairly well. Linguistics is sort of broad, so parts of it have a lot to do with literature and parts have very little to do with it.

An irruption! Of owls!
Crash just seems to be the word that biologists use to descibe a rapid populaiton decline. So you can mix it with other words -- mouse crash, lemming crash, crab crash -- to make funny combinations. The big deal is that when you have one species pretty much dependent on another for food, the crash of one population really affects the other. So these owls moved south instead of just staying in Canada and dying, but it's still a pretty majur disruption.

And then stop by my place for snacks because it's just a few towns over from here. Promise no mouse bones.

I'm honestly incredibly disheartened to hear this from you, especially from a librarian who I'm sure was slightly different in thinking a few years back when the government felt it was really important to start monitoring everyone's library records.
Don't get me wrong, I still think this is a terrible horrible invasive impractical and rude idea, but I wasn't clear that people even understood what was actually being requested and what was not being... [more]
