What is a workshop? I have been giving public speeches at conferences and the like for years, but occasionally I am asked to give a workshop and I'm not sure what one is or how to do one under the specific circumstances that I am often in.

Help me properly remember this study or who wrote about it. It was about some animal that, in experiments, preferred the anticipation centers of their brain -- seeking circuits? -- stimulated over the pleasure centers. I read it in some poppish science book in the last few years and now I'm trying to more accurately recall it so I can use it in a talk, if I'm rembering it correctly.

I flew with JetBlue last month. Some small items were missing from my luggage when I arrived at my destination. I am trying to figure out how far I want to go with this to try to 1) get reimbursed for lost/stolen items and 2) get them to make their legal documents reflect their actual policies. I'd like some advice from people who have dealt with airlines and their luggage policies to help me strategize.

I am trying to find some software that exists in my mind, but I don't know if it exists in real life. I want a way to represent the people in my address book as dots on a [US] map, somewhat dynamically. OSX or web-based. Free or cheap, not subscription-based, though I would pay more for the exact right app.

Say you've got a political action website that you fund out of your own shallow pockets. Say that in addition to helping bring about what you see as positive political change, one of your motivations is to maybe find a name and/or good job for yourself in the future. Pretend it's successful, but in intangible ways. You're still poor and still hope to someday get out of your dreary 8-5 shit job. Say your site got noticed by the right people and is having the sort of effect you wanted it to, but you have a decision to make...

Is there any inexpensive way to get to Australia [Sydney/Adelaide] by plane from the US [Vermont/Boston]? I've been invited to speak at a conference in December but was surprised by high ticket prices. Any advice beyond the standard "Use Travelocity/Orbitz/Hotwire/Priceline" would be appreciated.

How many words are in a 30 minute teevee show? I am writing the text to a half hour "How to use our library's historical database" show. I am doing it for public access with the local historical society. I have about 24-26 minutes to work with and I'm wondering what word length I should aim for? It will be a pretty low tech affair -- screen shots and pointers -- but if anyone can give me some advice as far as length [or anything else honestly] I'd sure appreciate it.

Gas tank leak. I drive a 96 Honda Accord with about 100K miles on it. I've been noticing a gas smell in my car for the past 200 miles or so, more noticable when I fill-up though I assumed it was because I got gas all over me. How immediately dangerous is this? [more inside]

In April I moved from Washington state, which has no state income tax, to Vermont, which does. I just got a W2 from an employer. The employer took out state taxes for Vermont, as well as for California where the work was done. Do I have to file a tax return in California to get my eleven dollars back? I'm not looking for binding tax advice, but has anyone been through this before -- filing state taxes in multiple states, or having employers withhold for multiple states? What's standard operating procedure here?

Using a PDA as a remote control -- I'm a bit of a bum and the one thing I don't like about watching DVDs on my iBook is having to get up and mess with the thing to start/stop/pause the movie. I have heard you can use a PDA [I have an old good-for-nothing Visor] as a remote control, but I'd like some more info before I invest [if necessary] in software. Has anyone done this? What did you use? Did it work okay?
