Cookout at my place, Saturday August 4th. Grilling starts at 5 or so. Drive-in movies at 8-ish assuming the chosen films aren't totally awful. Rain plan is drinking and Scrabble/Boggle/old Connections episodes. Details to follow in the comments once we know who's coming.

UpdateFilter: while I was waiting in line for an iPhone with my friend yesterday (for him not for me) I was catching up on a little work. I was showing my friend the MeFi admin interface and someone looked over my shoulder and said "is that MetaFilter?" I said yes, was he a member? He said no but
a video that he had made got linked on MeFi last February and had catapulted him to mini-stardom for a few weeks. He gave me some backstory on the movie....

MeFiSea -- Metafilter Seattle get together, this Saturday, June 8th, at
Gasworks Park. We have two picnic tables reserved starting at 10 am, but I figured we could show up around 5 or 6, have a little potluck and maybe retire to a nearby bar afterwards if the park rules against alcohol [

Sidebar collapse. I think when folks were asking for the sidebar collapse to be brought back, it was not so much to get rid of clutter as it was to free up that 25% of the screen that the front page posts could run into. Even with the sidebar collapsed [and the ads remaining, they're ok with me] I still have a large blue stripe down the right hand side, making it one longass page. Is there a way to wiggle around the front page elements to have the ad present but more side-to-side room for posts, or is this just me and my mac pissing into the wind?

Library weblogs are in the news this month in both the major librarian print publications: Library Journal [linked] and American Libraries [print only]. I have nothing special to say about this, but it's one more notch on the keyboard for webloggers.

While I'm aware that MeFi is not supposed to be our own personal mailing list/craigslist/singles bar/whatever, sometimes there's events that warrant attention by the MeFi community -- get togethers, SXSW coordination, etc. It might be nifty to have a MeFi Events section added to MetaTalk where if you were in some geographical area and wanted to host a gathering, or invite MeFiers to yours, you could post something [even a
self-link!] there. What do you all think?

I just noticed another insanely long no-link post was pulled this morning. It might be useful to have a Island of Bad Posts archive where stuff that gets pulled is anonymized and listed along with a 25 word description of why it was pulled. This page could be linked to the register page for new users so they can learn through negative example as well as learning by positive example just by reading the site. Plus I'm sure a lot of us are just curious about what's getting pulled....

I tend to browse MeFi from all over the place, meaning I'm rarely logged in when I want to post something. The little login feature, once it authenticates me, drops me back to a link to the main page, instead of a link to where I was when I clicked "post new thread." Fixable?

I just noticed that the
customize page lets you add a blurb....however, once you add the blurb and go to
check your updates, you still see all that intro text which I think is unecessary and splits up user info unecessarily. Esp.since it's in bold, which my user info is not. Can this goaway? Other people's thoughts?

two little peeves with the new get-up:
1. my prefs didn't carry over and I'm not sure how to customize metatalk to have smaller font sizes... [esp the new black n white header topics]
2. how do we click back to metafilter from metatalk? the ALT tag on the lefthand metatalk pic still sez metafiler but it just gets me to metatalk home currently...

I like you both in different ways...
how meta can you get...? I think this post a topic thingie that I am typing in right now could be more specialized to metatalk, like it's not always gonna link someplace... differentiation of the two sections -- besides just by color -- is probably a good idea.
any way to get threaded comments going using this interface? some of the metachat may get kinda lengthy.
