MeFi post: quit playing with your balls and throw a frisbee
I once went on a date with a guy who took me disc golfing. At first I thought it was different and gave him points for being creative, but it was probably one of the worst dates of my life. I can barely throw a normal frisbee and I had to spend the day pitching the disc towards targets I couldn't see 400 feet away over 9 courses. As if that wasn't bad enough the guy was SO competitive with me (he kept reminding me of my score when I stopped keeping track after I passed 20 after at the third... [more]

MeFi post: Rachel Zoe Ain't Got Shit on Claudia Kishi
Thanks so much TPS. This brought back such memories! I got my first set of BSC books from Costco when my mom wouldn't let me buy the Sweet Valley High ones because they were too racy... or something (!!). Claudia was definately my favorite and I always thought Stacy was an inspiration for Carrie on SATC.

MeFi post: Happy lunar new year!
Hey thanks for this. I always pictured my old hanbok from when I was a kid: bright red top, bright green bottom, gold embroidery everywhere, scratchy itchy shiny hot... *shudder* But the modern examples with new textures and prints really make it interesting again!

MeFi post: Britain: we discovered the queue
I have to agree with influx based on my own observances here this past year or so. Sometimes I'm really taken aback how blatantly racist the "newspapers" are here. And not just racist against immigrants, but of different parts of Britain itself (ie Scottish vs. English tensions).

MeFi post: Yes, We Can.
Salvia, your comment has made me look more into this topic (thanks!) and you are right, Obama does not seem to say much about nuclear energy in his platform. However, he does have an extensive platform on energy and the environment which includes a plan for investing in and developing alternative means of energy as well as lowering consumption.

Maybe a reason for what is viewed as his supportive view of nuclear energy might be based on a similar viewpoint as summarized... [more]

You know, when I first heard about this I was also thinking "Yahoo? People still use Yahoo? Why would they do that? Laaame."

But then I read this thread and comments like this:

I'm not fan of yahoo, but they own both flickr and delicious.

they've done a ton of stuff for the developer community, fostered a real sense of direct access to their programmers via blogs, etc...

MeFi post: ravelry.com is a knit and crochet community.
To step back a bit, I think Ravelry is an interesting case for "social networking sites" in general.

Now that sites like MySpace and Facebook have become so popular, people are losing the identity they were seeking in them. I think people will start gravitating toward specialty sites like Ravelry, which offer more than just networking, but also the ability to enhance a special interest.

I hope this trend continues as I could see the... [more]

MeFi post: What the World Eats
Very cool post. I saw a bit of the BBC special here in the UK but wondered what the comparison to US consumption would be and now I know and much more!

At first I thought the costs were quite high, but I noticed that they also included re-usable items like condiments and spices.

Does anyone know if the families were chosen as representative sizes? Do households in Egypt typically have 12 members?? I was also really surprised at the lack of... [more]

D J Robertstein could you explain your comment? If the perpetrator were black, mexican, chinese, japanese, etc do you think they would have had less implications for racial perceptions?

Am I missing something about how koreans are viewed in the states nowadays (been living overseas for about 6 months now) also, fwiw, I am (south) korean and received full US citizenship 3 years ago. I mean, I know that Kim Jong-il has been considered a wack job, but he's kind of on a... [more]

I agree that it's possible people don't really distinguish between the two countries but still, I honestly don't think people combine the unfavorable policies of the N.Korean government with prejudices against koreans in general. From my understanding, I think people are *sympathetic* to the citizens of n. korea because of what they're government is doing to them.

Politics aside though, I'm not saying koreans do not have their share of negative stereotypes... I just... [more]

Well I do agree with you that this certainly doesn't help the racial stereotype. I'm already cringing at the thought of the exhaustive discussions that are about to commence, not just in mefi but in news in general (gun control debates, immigration law, racial stereotypes, college safety, etc).

It's very heartbreaking all around and I definitely feel for everyone that has been impacted.

I've had lots of "go back to your own country" comments since I can remember. However, if yeolson's report is truly correlated with recent events, that makes me very sad indeed. It's really too bad we can't avoid the topic of race as soon as it was confirmed, when it's very clear that this was an insane act by a very sick guy.

Nugget, that is mostly true if you are watching/reading English news. Flip that all around if you're in Scotland. :D

And to add to that, from my recent experience of watching the 6 Nations Rugby Championship with a few Scots, if Scotland had beat England it would have been a deserved triumph but when they lost soundly, everyone around the table agreed that "rugby doesn't count". ;)

MeFi post: Elaborate Yarn Scam
Any group joined by common interest is going to exhibit a level of loyalty and passion that the outsiders just don't get. There's no need to go after knitters with such venom. And you really cannot argue against the fact that when knitters unite, it's toward a positive cause. Sure, some members take to extremes but that's human nature and they're the minority so to class the whole lot of them as nutcases is just immature. I happen to personally know the people running the sock club and your... [more]

Roboto, all that Blue Moon is responsible for is good customer service. Just like the bank is responsible for taking care of their own customer, Blue Moon. I would actually think it tacky for Blue Moon to rely on their customers to launch some sort of attack on their behalf.

And as far as knitting for a cause is concerned, there are a TON of charity oriented knitting campaigns to choose from if one were so inclined. For a start, check out the Red Scarf project and... [more]

I also think it's cheekily fitting that the boycotters are using CafePress to raise funds, when SFSE used CafePress as a middleman last year to start the whole mess.
posted to MetaFilter by like_neon at 1:04 PM on January 24, 2006
I don't quite understand what SFSE's argument is because their forum uses "Stitch & Bitch Cafe" (note the registered trademark symbol's position) not "Stitch & Bitch". I don't think anyone would have a problem with giving them "Stitch & Bitch Cafe" but suing for "Stitch and Bitch"? That's rather asinine. I would heartily boycott them myself but as I am not much of a sewer, I doubt they'd miss my business.

From what I can understand, CafePress was just a middleman. SFSE sent a letter to CafePress who sent a letter to customers of CafePress who were using the "Stitch & Bitch" phrase on products. They're sort of in the same boat as YahooGroups. Yahoo is probably neutral about the phrase, but just to be safe, they won't allow groups to use that phrase anymore (thus now a lot of groups use SnB - cityname to bypass this new restriction)

"Here I am minding my own business, and then it becomes obvious to me that I have to be vigilant about what is mine and belongs to me,"

What should have become obvious to her is that she lives in a vacuum and is just pissed off she couldn't come up with an original idea. I love that she came off as a delusional bi-otch.

MeFi post: It Was the Dumbest of Times
I like that they didn't pick a winner for the "Innovation" category:

Innovation is like a New Year's resolution: easy to talk about but hard to pull off. We define it as a product or business model that's truly new and genuinely successful. That's why last year was a letdown. Apple? Its growth had much to do with incremental tweaks to existing products. Ditto for Del.icio.us, Flickr, and MySpace, which are built around decade-old ideas about social

I'm surprised no one has pointed this out yet: If impeachment goes through, isn't Cheney next in line? And this is better how?
Unless there's plans to then impeach Cheney... in which case by the time all this is all done it'll be time for the next elections.

From wikipedia: Once an individual is impeached, he or she must then face the possibility of conviction via legislative vote, which then entails the removal of the individual from office.

Ok so even if Bush were impeached, there is still only the possibility of conviction. (this is where Clinton got off the hook, right?)

So, if it ends up that Bush is convicted and removed from office, is it not true that... [more]

This is the show where in one episode Cartman is probed by aliens and as the show progresses he basically farts out a spaceship, right?

And Cruise/Scientology-crew are mad because they think the public will take this show seriously? Although given how far fetched some of Scientology's tenents are, I guess they might believe it. Heck, maybe this is how Xenu comes back!
