A New Mozart?
Can I say that she's not that good? Is that allowed? It's a great story and all, but aren't there a lot of 5 year olds that can bang out a so-so fur elise?

I'm not here...
So I have now decided to pitch a reality show to the networks. It's sort of like Project Greenlight, but for sitcoms. And it's called, "I'm Not Here to Make Friends, I'm Here to Make Friends".

Do you like bad boys?
I don't really "get" GG Allin in that I don't particularly feel drawn to him, but I'm fascinated by the people that are. He speaks to certain people and I can't exactly find the common thread. He's a fascinating character to say the least. That said, there's no way in hell I'm clicking on that link.

It's the Web 2.0 eightball.
Huh. I just ask my iPod. For example, I'd say "iPod, should I stay in and do my laundry, or should I go out with my kinda weird, yet interesting neighbor to drum & bass night?"
Then I put it on shuffle, and try to interpret the song. I'll do a test right now for your benefit.
iPod, should I bother to post this comment to metafilter, or should I hold my piece because I'm not actually offering anything to the discussion?... [more]

Bat Boy, RIP
Oh, no, this can't be happening!
I feel guilty. I used to buy a copy with my groceries almost every time, just for fear that this would happen someday.
Surely there is something that we can do!
I always really loved "Dear Dotty" -- and some of their articles were just so delightfully silly that I still laugh when I think about them. Those were the ones I really loved, I remember one with a picture of a cute dog... [more]

Happy "leaving a bad situation" day?
Some people just aren't very eloquent. I actually think it's nice that Hallmark would make cards for things that are so hard for so many people (eating disorders, cancer diagnoses and quitting smoking are all very hard and very real things that very normal people face). So what if you think it's cheesy. If it helps someone who might not say something otherwise lend support to someone in their life who really needs it, that's kind of awesome.
Also, beware Locks of Love.... [more]

"I'd like a coke." "What kind?" "Huh?" "Dr Pepper, Coke or Sprite." "I'll take Dr Pepper Coke"
As a child, I thought all soda was Coke, and would get angry when I ordered it in a restaurant and was never asked "What Kind?" -- but I don't know if that was a Southern California thing or a me being an idiot thing.
I will say that people seem to drink Coke exclusively in Southern California, and there is a helluva lot more Pepsi on the east coast than I ever dreamed there would be.
All that said, the fact that there are that many... [more]

Letter To A Nut
You know, I despise Ann Coulter as much as the next person with any respect for reasoned political discourse, but it really annoys me to no end when folks who also despise her formulate rants that consist of nothing but sexual degrading and humiliating one-liners. It's particularly unctious when it's produced by someone who is supposedly coming from a liberal point of view, a political preference that supposedly (although I know not always!) frowns upon the whole idea that women should be seen... the dreamcast lives again?
Hmm. I think I might just have to dig my Dreamcast out of the attic. I hope it still works! I too have excellent memories of Samba de Amigo, Soul Calibur and Crazy Taxi. My boyfriend and I played Tony Hawk for the first time on that system, placing the disc into the tray in the evening and then staying up until long after the sun came up playing epic games of Horse. I don't think my hands have ever hurt so bad. I had similar experience with Samba de Amigo, when I went to bed after playing that... [more]
