I think we may end up discovering the national crazification factor this election. I assume it's somewhere around 35-40%.

Saying that the market is suffering from 'irrational exuberance', or a 'panic', is using the metaphor of a market as a person, and is not necessarily a description of the mental states of the individual participants. In fact, individual investors could all be acting rationally and calmly and still generate a 'panic', for example, in the market as a whole.

I looked in the thread to see if somebody had already taken care of calling it 'glurge'. Someone had, so I didn't have to comment.

Yeah, let's get rid of earmarks entirely.

Here's a handy chart showing exactly what a huge impact that will have on the budget.

MeFi post: Tell the short shite to pick Palin!
So, the first one is done by a conservative, anti-Obama person. Probably not a good idea to put your political argument into the mouth of Adolph Hitler.

I'll pass on the rest of these.

MeFi post: Freeways Without Futures
I had a feeling the southeast freeway in DC would be there. When I lived in MD, I drove it all the time to get downtown to go to clubs (I miss you, Nation), but it is an eyesore.

There's another one in DC that I'd dump, too, the Whitehurst Freeway. It's saves a few blocks from the admittedly nightmarish drive down M street in Georgetown, but it utterly destroyed the Georgetown waterfront.

What I'm concerned about is a bank run. At some point people are going to panic and start pulling their money out. WaMu might be the last straw for a lot of people.

MeFi post: The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language
If you want to really do something that would probably make Jesus happy, and the rest of us, too, then memorize and understand the Sermon on the Mount, live by its principles and throw away the rest of the bible. If anybody ever asks you why you're such an awesome person, then tell them that it's because of the Sermon on the Mount, and keep quiet about your religion the rest of the time, especially all that bullshit about how he died for our sins. He didn't die for our sins, he died because... [more]

MeFi post: Being Productive on Salvia
The video was funny, it makes me simultaneously relieved and regretful that I didn't have a video camera around when my frends and I were doing that kind of shit every weekend (though not Salvia, that looks kind of scary, actually).
posted to MetaFilter by empath at 5:40 PM on September 14, 2008
Is there any kind of emotional content to a salvia trip? I don't hear anyone talking about euphoria or joy and beauty and light (or darkness for that matter), the way that people talk about LSD and shrooms.

I kind of think that now might be a good time to start thinking about getting back into the market? Maybe not jumping in right away, but in the next 4-6 months. The main thing holding back the markets is uncertainty, as I understand it. Once all this paper gets cleared and on the books, don't you think the market is going to bounce back rather quickly? Are there any other big hairy green monsters lurking? I remember reading all this bubble stuff as far back as 2004, but I don't see anything... [more]

SNL could have used the opportunity to really highlight Palin's failings, but it was really just a standard "bitter Hillary" sketch.

Why is every bit of satire and commentary judged on how well it helps Obama's campaign?
