Communication in the early days of dating
I don't think I'm comfortable sending 'how's your day going?' or 'thinking of you :)' texts when we've been seeing each other for less than a month.

A lot of this generational and cultural. Some people just live on their phones and ims and facebook. A high proportion of OK Cupid users are likely to be these people. I would just text/im to keep in touch.

Digital edition of a small arts magazine - the best way to do this?
Am I being an old-fashion curmudgeon here? Are magazine apps now pretty established and sensible for asmall magazine? Sales of tablets are increasing all the time. I'd appreciate links to articles about the sector, opinions from knowledge app-makers or magazines, or any other thoughts about the best way to proceed on this.

The real problem isn't how much apple takes out of it, I don't think. The problem is going to be how much it costs you to develop... [more]

Why is anger the most problematic emotion?
Last time I got angry people around me were weak, avoidant and scared, or worse, told me it was wrong and rude to be angry.

Forget about anger. Anger is fine. It's wrong and rude to scare people.

I get angry sometimes, but I don't scare people. Something you are doing is beyond normally expressed anger if you are literally scaring people.

How to take notes in CS classes?
If you have internet access, you might want to use github and your favorite text editor for working on code in class. You're going to have to learn how to use a versioning system eventually anyway. You can include comments in your code as notes.

Clearly, this proves that I'm stupid
I thought I understood real numbers and division until I read these definitions and was also asked to prove them. First of all, my brain have difficulty just parsing out what's written; it's like a foreign language to me.

It is a foreign language. Never assume that any of those words mean what they mean in ordinary language.

A field, for example has a very precise definition which has very little to do with any way you've used... [more]

now I actually need to understand higher math for my current job.

Also, if you tell us what exactly you need to understand, it would be easier for us to lay out all the pre-requisites for you.

Yeah, and a lot of people have written really cranky papers based on intuition when they don't really understand what they're talking about.

In any case, what I mean is that you can't just visualize the kinds of spaces and fields that you study in abstract algebra.

Do I need to replace the whole radio in my car?
The dealer probably won't charge you to tell you that you need a new radio. You can probably just call them on the phone and ask.

Should I break up with my boyfriend?
Thanks for all the great feedback! Part of what makes me stumble is that he tells me he had a fairly stable (until the end) long term relationship with another girl and she was the one who ultimately mistreated and broke up with him. It makes me wonder why I trigger his critical nature but this other girl did not. I've had a few experiences like this where guys who claimed they were always the doormat in their past relationships have ended up mistreating, and it makes me think that... [more]

maybe you have mutual friends who have told you stories.

I wouldn't even take this at face value. Some people who are abusive are really good at making the other person seem like the problem to the outside world.

What would you say are the chances of this being parallel thought?
You'd be amazed at how hard it is to come up with an original name for a band. I spent literally months with one of my friends trying to come up with an alias to release his EDM productions on, and I don't care how obscure and clever we thought we were being, someone else had done it first.

Costa Rica in May?
Buses in Costa Rica are clean, comfortable and inexpensive. I would not drive anywhere in Central America if I had a choice. I don't know of any reason not to go in May. I went in the middle of rainy season and it wasn't even that bad.

Enjoy your vacation :)

Don't depend on Apple Maps, for sure. It doesn't even have most of Costa Rica mapped.

How can I most efficiently "spring clean" my laptop?
If anyone has good tips for how to keep files nice and orderly, please share!

Make sure your files have good names when you save them, and just use search. I don't organize anything. The whole file-folder metaphor is a bit outdated, anyway.

Eyewear for travel to sunny places: contacts vs. glasses?
I just spent 3 months in central america. I brought a single pair of designer glasses and no contacts. I wish I had brought some glasses more suitable for activity, but I don't wish I had brought contacts. I spent a lot of time in fairly rustic areas and staying in fairly gross hostels and there were a lot of places where i stayed where i wouldn't have been super happy about washing my hands in the water and then touching my eyes, and I lost a bunch of small stuff in my bag on the way. It... [more]

Mild stalking?
When I was using it, I definitely ended up looking at a few of the same people repeatedly if they came up at the top of my match list. I tended to just middle click down the whole list if i was browsing and open up a bunch of tabs. Also be aware that people know that you know you can see them and might be using repeated visits to see if you'll message them first (out of shyness or whatever)

Want career advice for IT in the SF/Bay Area
There are tons and tons of jobs for microsoft people. They're just in jobs in corporate IT and big consultancy firms like Accenture.

I don't think you need extensive 'linux experience' to get a job at a tech company that focuses on linux, but you do need to at least know your way around the command line and have at least some experience setting up and maintaining linux servers. I got my job with a tech company, which is largely with linux servers, on the basis of... [more]

Novels of Dragons
If you don't mind some breezily written silliness, you might enjoy Dragons Wild by Robert Aspirin. They are by no means Literature, but I picked one up in a hotel lobby while on vacation and rather enjoyed it. They also have the modern fantasy thing going for it that Dresden Files does.

Does copyright law cover samples used in industrial sound design?
A) This is a really great idea for a project, and I'm looking forward to hearing the results.

B) All recordings are copyrighted, but if 'fair use' is to have any meaning at all, I'm fairly sure that your usage of it would fall under fair use. An actual lawyer can give you a better answer.

Nutchance of making this succeed without help
I think you're probably over your head if those instructions are baffling to you. I'd maybe start with Linux for Dummies (I know you're using OSX, but the command line in OSX is pretty close to linux, and you'll be using mostly unix-like functionality when running apps like this.)
posted to Ask Metafilter by empath at 2:48 AM on January 24, 2013
I almost think it would be better to just install a linux VM on OSX, though, and learn that way, since you'll almost never install any of those products on an OSX box in production. If you learn how to do it on OSX, you're probably going to have to learn how to install it all over again on linux anyway.
posted to Ask Metafilter by empath at 4:41 AM on January 24, 2013
I guess to elaborate on the last answer -- I know you can get all these apps working on OSX natively, but the vast majority of tutorials you'll find are going to be assuming you're running linux (or possibly windows), and if you aren't familiar with both OSX and Linux, you're going to constantly run into problems following directions. The other advantage of using a VM is that if you mess up the install at some point, you don't need to figure out what you did wrong, you can just reload the image... [more]

It's actually pretty easy. You can pretty much just click next to continue through the whole process and it'll work. Since you're not going to be setting up a production server yourself, you don't really need to be overly concerned about really getting in to deep with configuring linux.

Once you're in linux, any of the tutorials should be a bit easier to follow (for example, to install solr in ubuntu, you can just copy and paste three commands)... [more]

Quoting from literature in conversations
Lots of people memorize lines from TV Shows and Movies just from watching them a lot. I've got lines memorized from books that I've just read often, and entire movies practically memorized.

Sometimes people just remember quotes in isolation because they're useful, or are particularly well expressed: "A witty saying proves nothing" was famously said by Voltaire, but I bet almost no one who quotes it has any idea what book it was from.

I need a help with a vaca destination in Caribbean or Central America
I wouldn't recommend Puerto Viejo for a 5 year old unless you stay outside the town itself. It can be a little bit rowdy, since it's kind of a party town. I wouldn't recommend Antigua either for a 5 year old, since there isn't much to do for a kid, that I remember, and Guatemala is not a country that feels safe at all. It's amazing, but I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't looking for excitement and adventure and willing to rough it somewhat.

Yep seconding avoiding all inclusives, especially in costa rica -- they're kind of a waste of money, especially if wanting to see local culture is a big deal for you. A few miles up the road from Puerto Viejo there are some hotels for less than $50/night that are literally right in the jungle (and not that far from the beach). You'll see sloths and monkeys right outside your room.

Personally I'd just make what the locals make:

If you're in central america, you have to go with rice and beans -- particularly gallo pinto. Get a local to show you how to make this stuff -- there are some hostels where you both have access to the kitchen and staff that cooks who might be able to show you. Burritos, Arroz Con Pollo, etc, etc.
